I’ll never forget seeing this game in a demo-loop at Toys R Us.. one kid was hogging it and the rest of us were staring at the screen and couldn’t believe how bad ass it looked. The 90’s was so good.

Right?? I understand a lot of movie/show to game adaptations have flopped over the years but ever since the early days of the MCU we haven’t gotten ANY good video game adaptations. I got hopeful with Avengers but that was such a half assed cash grab with no substance whatsoever I feel like they totally screwed all of us over for years to come. Could you imagine an online co op mode (in addition to a single player campaign) that allows you to play as your favorite XMen and get joined by other random characters who have strengths and weaknesses??

3:00 - another cool detail, which one might not pick up on in their first play-through, is that several levels have a secondary track that changes depending on which mutant you selected. Try playing the Savage Land stages as Wolverine, then as Cyclops, then as Nightcrawler. Notable differences.

First time I ever played the game, Wolverine was the automatic pick. Every time I start a new playthrough, any other mutant just doesn't feel quite right. Beast or Nightcrawler feel like they might work, but not quite. Psylocke feels off, but still balanced. Cyclops or Gambit on the other hand? Just, no. Reset. Cool, Wolverine again. Bub!

This game is mercilessly difficult. I can't remember how far I ever got in it but there are several stages shown in this video that I know I never reached. It's still a great game that I have fond memories of playing. It's also imo one of the best looking 16 bit games.

@@pteGmoney I was asked this by a kid one day...I replied, “You like Dark Souls, right?” He said yeah... So I say, “Imagine playing and then you die after fighting an enemy. No biggie, right? Just start from the last bonfire, right? So you start again, and this time you make it past the enemy, only to die from an off screen attack....You start YET AGAIN, and you make it to another bonfire. Yay, right? But now you die another 2 times from the SAME enemy....And this enemy ain’t even a boss, not even a miniboss...Just a slightly more powerful enemy...And finally, you make it all the way to the boss door, only to fall off a cliff!!! But this time, instead of starting from the last bonfire, you start from the BEGINNING OF THE WHOLE DAMN GAME...Gotta make a new character and everything....Now for the icing on the cake, imagine that you’re playing on easy mode....Now that should give you some understanding of how hard old school games were 😂😂😂😂

Jerome VicTor just stated that THIS game is really hard, and wasn’t necessarily saying that the first one wasn’t nor was he comparing them directly. Sure, the first one is hard because of its lack of fluid controls, unfair bosses, and some cryptic elements (namely one that I don’t even have to mention). But this one is still tough. 8 lives to complete the whole game without any way to replenish them is brutal, causing you to constantly restart the game all over again. The last 2 or 3 stages alone could suck half of your lives easily, that is, if you still have half your lives by the time you get there. (P.S. 99 lives code ftw!!)
@billny33
@billny33 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, like if you don't really get your shit down, you're not going to see half of the levels. Your life bar is too small for the amount of enemies you face in each level. Health powerups are too scarce. You have to earn everything in this game. And I've beaten the game, but it's not one of those games where once you beat it once, you can beat it every time. Most games I've played are like that. Clone Wars I had to play a lot to get good at, and once I beat it and stopped playing it, I picked it up a few years later and I can only get a few levels in again.

It's challenging, but I would not say it is devastatingly hard. I think it's pretty balance to be honest, considering the mutant powers are over powered at times. Also you can cheese with Wolverine healing factor, at least that's what I did playing this game at the age of 8.

I played this for the first time recently because the new X-Men '97 cartoon is out now and it's fun to go back and revisit the 90s X-Men stuff. This really is the best X-Men console game for sure. So I actually figured out an infinite lives “code” for this as a kid. Basically you started a player one game, then died once, then add a second player. You keep alternating p1 dying then p2, and if you Do it right you end up with p2 having infinite lived after p1 dies the final time. I might be forgetting some details but I think that’s how I did it.

I still love playing this game to this day, and we got it the when it came out as kids. The first was great in its own way, although if it didn't have the X-Men characters we probably wouldn't have tolerated the gameplay. The soundtrack is great in both of these. The 2 player was frustrating as hell at times but we suffered through it in this. The fact that you could actually be Magneto was next level, and love the "cold open." Pun well intended. P.S. The only thing can top the 4-Player arcade game...is the 6-Player arcade game...which you actually show 😉

Not to mention his Charge Attack could murder enemies through walls very safely, and had a nice area of attack. So I wouldn't say he was that disappointing IMHO. Maybe he wasn't as powerful as say...Gambit or Cyclops, but he was better at avoiding damage. He was just a more defensive long range character, which made him more unique. Much like how Wolverine could heal a certain amount of his health by standing still long enough, which made him great for fighting baddies and getting a good idea of the layout of a level.

In that one you also fight clones too, and those clones actually use their mutant powers. This game is really fun and now I want to play it. This game is a LOT of fun. There's no Pure X-Men games that can challenge this game. The closest thing I can think of was the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, which were rather different. It was more of a beat em up with Super Powers & RPG elements. Whereas this one was very much an Action Platformer. It'd be REALLY cool to get a REALLY GREAT X-Men game today. Unfortunately, it seems like you can't even get a cool new Avengers game. Hopefully Sony will create something good that they'll eventually release on other platforms ^^;

Finally picked this bad boy up on Ebay, best comic book game on the Genesis. I'll take this over Maximum Carnage which plays better on the SNES anyway

Now I know it's supposed to start that way. I have a broken copy and found a rom leg that wasn't soldered well , I resoldered it and when it booted up I was like what else is wrong with it.

This one and there are two good xmen games on SNES (one of xmen/spiderman), the other one is better, called Mutant Apocalypse! I'm a big Maximum Carnage fan myself though. Gotta love the classics!

I contend that there are very few "good" X-Men games that have both good gameplay and a proper Wolverine healing factor. It is his main mutant power and the sole reason he can do what he does...

Awesome game, pretty difficult, especially the ending boss sequence. I didn't actually beat this one until I was 19 and in my first year of college. Long game with no save points.

Great game. I'll give it to Sega for putting out such great beat 'em ups. X-Men Legends are pretty sweet too.
