This is a movie reaction to X-Men, released in 2000 and directed by Bryan Singer! This is not technically my first time watching, although the only time I saw this movie was back in 2000 and I was a kid who wasn't interested in comic/superhero anything, so I retained nothing about the story. Just remembered certain characters and how they looked! Now that I have a much different mindset, this movie is a blast! I love all the characters and actors and performances and can't wait for more of everything! Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

For those who don't watch the intro's and skip ahead to the reaction, I have seen this movie before only once, back in the year it released. At the time, I was a kid who didn't have interest in comics or superhero anything. Therefore I had only remembered some character looks and names going into this movie. As for the rest of the X-Men series, I have also seen Deadpool and Deadpool 2 (once each). I remember much more about those films though, so we will do live watchalong streams here on KZfaq when we get to them in the series order. If you want to see what this format is like, you can check out the Live tab on my channel to view ones I've done previously. kzfaq.infolive All other movies in the series are unwatched and I'm excited to get to them! So Hugh Jackman's physique in this one has more to do with the fact that he was a last minute replacement for another actor (Dougray Scott) who was cast as Wolverine, but was injured while filming Mission: Impossible 2, so he didn't have enough lead time to become the Huge Jacked Man that we would know from later movies. I agree that a more natural aesthetic is good, buuuuut... they all wanna replicate that comic book art physique. RDJ must have felt so lucky that he didn't have to take his shirt off much and got to wear a metal suit (or just a MoCap suit for the later instalments). And yep, that was Stan. I think this movie was the first to establish what would become a Marvel movie tradition with Stan having a cameo. In the comics, Logan has taken a number of other characters under his wing, starting with Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), who has a brief appearance in this movie as the girl who runs through the closed door. Jubilation Lee (Er... Jubilee) is probably even better known as one of his surrogate daughters (he has, like... a lot of them in the comics), also has a brief appearance in the film (the girl with the yellow jacket, sunglasses, and big hoop earrings sitting beside Rogue in the classroom scene). Since neither of them were the focus of this film, Rogue was the stand in. The 'yellow spandex' joke was a dig at Wolverine's costume in the comics since this movie came out when no one thought that comic accurate costumes would be taken seriously (and they may have been right, early days in the modern superhero movie era, after all), and Marvel's biggest big screen success before this was the black leather-clad Blade, so... go with what works. The Scott-Jean-Logan triangle was also straight from the comics, but a little less lopsided here than it's been in most of the comic run. Anyway, I ramble, so I will spare you from any more random trivia. Looking forward to see what you think of the rest of the series... it can be a bumpy but fun ride.

Kitty Pryde also has a brief cameo in this film (as well as in the 2nd film). In this one, she puts an apple on Professor X's desk and then runs through the closed door. Kinda funny that she gave him an apple, given that "PROFESSOR XAVIER IS A JERK!!!"

Originally in the comic books, Wolverine’s claws were supposed to come out of his gloves, but they eventually changed it to where they actually came out of his hands. He started out with bone claws and far denser skeleton than normal humans, but he was experimented on, and the fictional metal called, adamantium was fused to his bones, including his claws, which makes his bones nearly unbreakable and able to cut through practically anything. Also, Wolverine does feel pain, but his heightened healing factor allows him to heal from pretty much any injury, and he does age but he ages much slower than a normal human. In the comics, he’s about 200 years old, and fought in pretty much every important battle throughout history.
@lordmortarius538
@lordmortarius538 5 ай бұрын
Aging is a function of cellular degradation, which his healing factor would heal, hence no aging. The reason he ends up aging even slowly is because the adamantium is poisoning him from the inside, which his healing factor has been constantly fighting against, but over time it gets weaker and weaker until he succumbs.
@sithlordkaeyl21
@sithlordkaeyl21 5 ай бұрын
@@lordmortarius538, actually, he does age, hence him being almost 200 years old, and that he doesn’t look like a child anymore. His aging is just greatly reduced by his healing factor, and is much slower than a normal human’s.

The director forbid the actors from reading the comics. However, Hugh Jackman, while not a comic guy himself, understood fans would be judging this film. He bought a few X-Men graphic novels and read them and ended up really liking them. He then shared them with the cast so they could really understand the characters. He pushed for Logan to have a steady supply of cigars(even though he didn't partake until this film, and now does) and he snuck the "Hey bub" into the scene.

So fun facts about Rogue, they realized pretty quickly after she became a good guy (Yes, she started out as a villain in the comics) that her power meant some shitty quality of life stuff. I remember when this movie came out to theaters. I worked at a movie theater when I was a teen when it came out. The theater I worked for never got the movie because the movie company wanted 10 percent more than ticket prices came out. I had to go to another theater and watch it. I had to take a half hour drive to Wisconsin to see it. Later the theater I worked at got it in subtitles in the smallest theater. It was selling out like crazy. I met the actor Shawn Ashmore that plays Iceman a year and a half ago and such a cool dude and he is from Canada. I told Shawn I loved his show on Disney In A Heartbeat and I said when I seen him in that show he was my favorite actor and I knew you were going to have a good career. He really liked what I said to him and said thank you. I also said when you got the role for Iceman I was happy for him. He said have you met my brother because we have the same name. I said yes I met Aaron and he is just as cool as you. Aaron is his twin brother. I told Shawn I met him yesterday. When I went to the guy to pay for photo and autograph. The guy asks me my name I said Aaron. He quietly asks me is it spelled like him. I said yes. He wrote my name down. When Aaron looks at the name. He was surprised and said Aaron cool name. He signed a Locke and Key photo. He wrote my name and said Aaron cool name. Both brothers are amazing. Locke and Key is on Netflix. That is a really good show and only 3 seasons

"Remember when you could get bulky for movies and you didn't need to be the most jacked ever? We need to bring these bodies back." Thank you! There are quite a few articles about how unhealthy the super-jacked body type is for men. It involves doing a lot of incredibly punishing things to your body and being incredibly dehydrated every time you're on camera. Chris Hemsworth's physique in the latest Thor movie was CGI, it was so unattainable. So I appreciate hearing acknowledgement about wanting more body types like X-Men 1 Hugh Jackman on screen.

Toad is played by Ray Park, the same man who plays Darth Maul in Episode 1. Toad is also Magneto's #1 loyal follower, he's been in the Brotherhood since the beginning. Mystique is played by Rebecca Romijn, also currently playing Number One in Strange New Worlds. Mystique has kind of a weird on again off again relationship with the X-Men in the comics, and has at times been quite helpful. Adamantium is stronger than Vibranium, but has no unique properties other than its toughness (Vibranium cancels out vibrational energy which is what makes it good at absorbing hits). In the comics there are two types of Adamantium, the weaker kind that is used through most of the X-Men series, and TRUE Adamantium which is _actually_ indestructible. Wolverine has the former kind, and while strong, is not completely impervious. Rogue in the comics ends up killing Captain Marvel by touching her long enough to absorb ALL of her power, which became permanent due to absorbing all of her life force, so she can fly and is super strong and shit. They kinda did Rogue dirty in the films :P Magneto is definitely an anti-villain. He and Professor X worked side by side for a long time until ideological differences forced Magneto to separate and seek his own answers. Charles wanted to work with humans and bring them to understand and accept mutants, while Magneto felt that that would never happen on a large enough scale, and that conflict with humans was inevitable (and honestly, he's not wrong). What makes him an anti-villain is that his intentions are noble; to safeguard mutants. His methods in doing so are questionable _at best_ however, and what make him 'evil', but sympathetic, especially since he's a Holocaust survivor and knows what true evil looks like (and informs his opinion of humanity). The X-Men have always been a vehicle for telling stories fighting back against racism, bigotry, and 'othering' marginalized groups. I got into it in the 80's when homosexuals coming out became a big deal in society and the X-Men made their struggles understandable to a lot of people.

FYI the visor that Scott/Cyclops wears isn't part of his body, it's just gear. The lens is composed of a special type of quartz that nullifies the energy beams projected from his eyes. His power is always on, so he'd be blasting anything he looked at when his eyes are open. The visor and glasses he wears prevent that.

Many reactors balk at Toad. Three things in his defense. 1) He was added to show just how "weird" mutants can be; imagine him growing up getting reactions, to be honest, kind of like yours from every human he interacted with. It's not surprising that he turned evil. 2) He was chosen for this movie out of "every mutant in comic book history" (as that Letterboxd review said) because he was one of Magneto's very first minions in the comics. 3) Some of his lines were edited out of the final cut; he would have been a little cooler and a little more comic relief before the edits. Also, Storm's line about a toad who gets struck by lightning would have made more sense with the proper context. But you're not wrong about him. Very nicely done. 😵

the "what happens to a toad.." bit was a running line thru the film. Toad would use it to set up some toad based quips. Storm turning it back on him was supposed to be subverting the established trope by giving us a common sense unfunny answer. Except all the "What happens to a toad.." lines were cut for time. So Storm's call back winds up being the line's debut. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants is an old school X-Men bad guy group. Magneto and Toad were founding member. In the comics it had a rotating membership and toad rotated out. a lot.

I laughed when you talked about Storm not talking that much in this movie, and that's because of the actual reason why. Ororo grew up in Cairo in X-Men lore, and Halle Berry (who is a wonderful actress) tried to speak with an "African" accent when filming started (which you can see in a deleted scene). It does not sound good, and the filmmakers seemingly cut down her dialogue because of that, with her either using ADR or learning to tone it down for the lines she does say in the final cut of the movie. That makes it all the more funny to me that her biggest line in the film gets all this buildup and is then so poorly-written and kind of silly. The first time I heard "the same thing that happens to everything else", I said to my friends "I could come up with a dozen better lines than that, just off the top of my head!" Halle dropped the accent entirely for future X-Men movies, and she thankfully got better lines and often more screen time than in this movie.

Growing up watching the animated X-Men show in the 90s and being a big fan of the comic books, my friends and I were so excited about seeing a live-action X-Men movie, especially since superhero movies weren't that common back then. We also never thought we'd see another Star Wars movie in our lifetime, so getting The Phantom Menace and X-Men a year apart was mind-blowing! And the fact that Ray Park, the guy who played Darth Maul, was playing Toad in this movie was an often-shared "fun fact". It seems like the filmmakers knew this connection would be a big deal to fans at the time, since Toad twirling that metal rod that looked like a staff felt like an obvious reference to Maul's double-sided lightsaber, but it totally was a big hit for us when we saw it on screen.

I'd been to lots of premieres for my job but this one made me feel so self conscious as the female cast in this movie are just so gorgeous. Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romjin and Halle Berry - ridiculously beautiful in person. All the paparazzi were there mainly for those three women and as you walked towards the cinema you could see them thinking " Is she someone I should take a photo of?" As I got closer you could see their faces go, "No she's nobody" and turn away disappointed. It's a bizarre experience to go through.

So, I asked ChatGPT, and it told me Magnus was more of a title he used, and that Erik Lensherr was his most-used name, with Max Eisenhardt being his birth name. Magnus Magnussen is an Icelandic journalist I have never seen or heard of, but I know for sure this USED to be his name.

Yeah Magnus was his name at first. Then Erik, then Max. Though i dont remember Magnussen. I remember him being called just Magnus, no surname

Ultimately I can take or leave the actual plot of this movie, but the triumph is they managed to land perfectly so many main characters, especially Logan, Prof X and Magneto. The one thing that stuck in my mind from the time, knowing the comics is that The X-Men had a big tollerance, acceptance message, where you dont mistreat people because they are different, and the movie ran with the the tagline "Trust a few, fear the rest", which is so totally the opposite of the point of the whole thing.

It’s a shame that Brian Singer turned out to be a scummy person, because he effectively used mutation as a stand-in for prejudice against homosexuality.

@@keefriff99 Yes, though I think some of the writers of the comics where playing with similar ideas a bit earlier, and had at earlier times been a racism analogy, and disability. I dont think its a coincidence Xavier was in a wheelchair for one.

Putting them all in matching black leather while they fight colorful(ish) villains kinda hurts their messaging too. The colorful costumes were part of each X person's identity and making them all the same defeats so much of that.

I love this movie; it was my introduction to the X-Men universe. The first movie I ever saw Famke Jannsen(Jean Grey) in was a James Bond movie, Goldeneye. It was Pierce Brosnan's first movie as James Bond and Famke Jannsen was one of the villains, with the memorable character name of Xenia Onatopp. I loved Hugh Jackman in this movie; he was great as Logan/Wolverine. Two movies with Hugh Jackman outside of the X-Men films I love to watch are Van Helsing and Real Steel. Amazing movies.

Fyi, as a reminder Wolverine has to obviously have the power to regenerate cause he literally shoots his metal claws out thru his actual skin and does not bleed!!!! When they return back into his body the skin immediately seals up & is healed so he is very obviously able to regenerate!! I always thought that was so obvious so when i see ppl surprised by his power im like wtf... of course he can, he just pushed fricken metal thru his hand & he is not bleeding. Also, Professor X helmet very true to comics in design. Ur such a sweetie & i adore ur reactions!! I can tell u were never into comics & thats ok. Still fun to watch u react!❤😊❤edit: cant spell today lol

When Rogue says she can feel Logan and her boyfriend in her head, it is because it's like a tiny bit of their personality enters her. In her mind. She can hear them speaking, so the more people she touches, the more voices and personalities live in her head. and the voices often argue with each other. It's been an obscenely long time since I learned this, So I'm not sure if it's been retconned from the canon. I believe that they do eventually fade away, but it takes quite a while, which, as you can imagine can suck especially if she had to touch someone evil, psycho, rapey or just plain didn't like.

Some forgotten and/or little known powers that Wolverine/Logan has are that he can actually super heat his claws, is resistant to extreme temperatures of heat and cold, and can communicate on a telepathic level with animals. Wolverine and Sabretooth both share a bloodline with lupine mutants, such as wolfsbane, warpath and a few others, all of which share heightened senses of hearing, sight and sound

I like it when Logan asks "You actually go outside in these things?" and Scott asks "What would you prefer, yellow Spandex?" 31:22. The funny thing is that Wolverine's outfit in the comics is Yellow Spandex. lol I don't know if you've seen the Lord of the Rings movies yet but Ian McKellen (Magneto) in this movie also plays Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. I loved these movies and the Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies because they were the first comic book movies made where they actually had the technology to do the movies justice. If you want to see what I mean, look up the Spiderman movies from the 1970's. Even the Christopher Reeve Superman movies from the 70's and early 80's were the best comic book movies at the time and I really enjoyed them but yea. The best comic book movies/ tv shows that existed before the year 2000 were the Christopher Reeve Superman movies from the 70's & 80's and the Incredible Hulk TV series from the late 70's & early 80's. Try looking these older shows/movies up on here. I would love to hear what you think of those old movies and stuff from back then. There's even an old Captain America movie that I remember watching as a kid.

❌️ I don't remember the first time I saw X-Men, but I remember loving it a lot. I still enjoy it, but compared to some of the MCU movies. The dialog can be a tad corny or just not very good. Mystique is definitely my favorite villain. Rebecca Romijn absolutely kills it. Toad is definitely not my favorite, but I think they chose him because of budgeting reasons. Mystique's cgi alone must've cost a pretty penny. I would have to say that Wolverine is my favorite hero in this movie. We're super lucky that Hugh Jackman was cast instead of Danny Devito. Yes, Danny was actually considered for the part of Wolverine very early on. Mainly because in the comics. Wolverine is only 5'3'' tall. Apparently, Russell Crowe recommended Hugh when they offered the part to him.

In your conclusion, you touched on the struggle of mutants in the X-Men universe, and Stan Lee said this struggle was actually based on the civil rights movement in the US in the 60s. Stan has said over the years that it could be a stand-in for the struggle of any minority group, and (no spoilers) director Bryan Singer really emphasizes this in part of the second X-Men movie (which all makes it funny how some people don't get that, when it's literally in the DNA of the X-Men's story). In fact, Stan said that Charles and Erik were inspired by Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X respectively, both fighting to better things for their people but going about it with different philosophies. So, when you (or anyone) talk about understanding Magneto's motivation or point-of-view and not really thinking of him as a "villain", those conflicting feelings are intentionally created, and, in just about every X-Men property, the X-Men have to work with Magneto at some point, as he ultimately wants to help all mutants and becomes the lesser of two evils in certain situations. And yeah, that makes it hard to root against him some times.
