After a few miserable nights of being woken up in the middle of the night due to false alarms from our smoke detectors, we decided it was time to replace them. Jonathan critically evaluated the possibilities and was thrilled to find X-Sense.
X-Sense makes a variety of alarms but the ones that worked best for our situation were the wireless interlinked alarms. I really like the remote control that allows me to turn off the alarms when needed.
Full disclosure: Jonathan contacted X-Sense and asked them to send us the products that we share in the video in exchange for an honest review on our channel. We are incredibly pleased with the X-Sense products.
You can find these alarms at:

Or you can pick them up on Amazon.

Would be great if they were voice enabled so when your hands are full, you can shout, "I'M JUST COOKING!" to turn them off.

I love that...perhaps coming technology will use voice recognition to do just that. Thanks for your comment...keep doing great things!

Ours did the same, it would start blaring at 2 AM, I would shake the rest of the night and couldn’t sleep. After three times, I took every one down to our shooting range and dispatched them. They were all replaced recently, and it’s been calm so far. Wish I saw these before I got the ones I did, but perhaps in the future.

Our home was over 10 years old, so I knew it was probably time to replace the all the smoke alarms. I'd had trouble with the heat-sensing kind reacting to the kitchen oven being opened, so I got the photoelectric kind as replacements (and smoke typically happens long before heat). Our house is already interconnected with wires. I usually remind folks to replace their smoke alarm batteries at the New Year so they make it into a ritual and avoid the 3am low battery wake-up. We also had one of those replacements in our bedroom start beeping just 6 months later, and I found that it had collected hair spray particles! I had to replace the unit, and the wife adjusted to using the spray under the bathroom fan. I also started using Wago lever connectors to make replacing the units far more easy than using wire nuts.

Good video Jonathan and Kylene, thanks. Wondering if anyone knows if these can be paired to the X-Sense SBS50 base station, to be able that way to get notifications via the phone app. TIA

How are these alarms doing? Are you still happy with them so far and have you had any false alarms with them?

I had an interesting situation where our alarms had a low battery and were chirping, two at once so pretty bad. After we replaced the first ones battery, we totally forgot about the second one even as it continued to chirp...until it stopped about 5 minutes later, and all was silent... But then, every alarm in the house began to sound in alarm mode. Not low battery chirping, full on alarm mode. My soul practically left my body for 1/2 a second. They did this for 10 seconds before going silent again with the one that had been chirping initially continuing it's chirping.

Something similar happened to me with my new construction house I had built 5 years ago. Mine were all wirelessly connected and started going off after about a year (batteries needed changing) but I live alone and the ceilings in my living room are 20 feet high. They went off every minute or so for THREE DAYS until I could get someone to come over and unhook them. Absolutely terrified my three cats. I ended up buying the X-Sense with the 10-year battery and NOT wirelessly connected, and had my friend install them low enough to where I can reach them with stepstool and permanently disconnect the others. Not a perfect solution but I live alone, have some mobility issues (no ladders for me), and don't have someone that can come over at the drop of a hat.

Clearly Kylene was traumatized by that experience, every time you made one of those things beep she flinched. Triggered!

Yes...in all honesty, it freaked me out a bit also. Every night when dropping into bed, I had the thought...Oh No! Will it happen tonight! Things had to change! Thanks for your comments and for being part of the solution!

You should buy some smoke and CO to test them and show what happens.

As a engineer I tell you in a digital world you have to be concerned about impairments, such as interference and multipath propagation...Don't use those if you have a pacemaker either .

I wish there was a channel that tested most of the smart detectors, because you can read reviews on Amazon but hardly any of them have tested the device. There is the new X-Sense Wi-Fi Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm Carbon Monoxide Detector, are you going to test this? I was going to buy it on Amazon but none of the UK reviews indicate they have tested it.

You should not place battery-operated fire alarms on a junction box. It's not up to code. Instead you should have installed a wired option.

Wow...bad research. You missed out on the option for wifi connectivity with your phone. I mean, really if you are going to go to all of this trouble, get detectors that alert you on your phone when you aren't home, lol.

The WORST thing is to have combination alarms since smoke and CO² settle differently, smoke rises and CO² falls to the floor. So combinations don't work. I used to sell them and have spoken with the fire dept and they agree they are the worst as they give a false sense of security when they're not in the proper spot separately like they should be.
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones Жыл бұрын
Hey Mariposa...actually, since we are talking about CO (carbon monoxide) and not CO2 (carbon dioxide), it does make sense to have them up high. CO is actually just a bit lighter than air ...molecular weight of CO is 28.01 g/mol vs. air which is 28.96 g/mol. And yes, since the molecular weight of CO2 is 44.01, if we were dealing with that, it would definitely sink to the floor. In reality, it doesn't much matter because the weights are so similar, the CO mixes in the air and is almost uniform. The only exception would be a room that is completely closed and where air movement was nonexistent. In that case, the gases would stratify with the CO on top of the air. Great question because it can be confusing. Thanks for being part of the solution!

Captain of a career fire dept here. You are actually incorrect and whoever you talked to is wrong. Also we’re talking about CO, not CO2. Combos work great, the only caveat is the fact that typically the CO sensors don’t last as long as the smoke, but these days it seems they’re rating them both to 10yrs.

False, and false. FYI carbon monoxide is not Co2.
