X99 CPU Value Hunting: i7-6900K vs E5-1660v4 vs E5-1650v4

  Рет қаралды 39,081

Does It Game?!

Does It Game?!

Жыл бұрын

The Core i7-6900K was, for all intents, the best gaming CPU that X99 ever served up...a roided out, sexy-named successor to the i7-5960X that managed to best both its predecessor and its more premium big brother the i7-6950X in gaming. It's shed over 85% of its original price, making it now the best value it's ever been.
However...
...prices have fallen even further on Broadwell Xeons, presenting two challengers to the i7's budget X99 throne! And they both make surprisingly legitimate claims, especially when paired with a budget workstation!

I just did a budget x99 build with a 1650-v4. Only bad thing about it was I opted for a gigabyte x99 board (used) off eBay and it came with the first bios. So to update I had to buy some crappy 10 core Xeon and then update and then put this in. But man does she run nice. 32gb g skill aegis ram with 4 slots still open. Thermalright tower cooler. 11x fans in a nice case, and a 2070 super. For 300$ spent it can run anything I’ve thrown at it in ultra settings

That's one of the tricky things with x99. Ram plays such a crucial part in making that platform so dang fast. I was messing around with an i7 5820k and an x99 MSI motherboard. I could see wildly different performance numbers with ram running at 2666 vs 3000 vs 3200...... Even so the Xeons on this platform are so freaking good it's ridiculous. I'm currently running an E5 1650 vs 3 in my personal..... At like 4.7........ fastest freaking CPU I have ever had.

@podcasting68 the definitely depends on how you use your computer. If you're looking for something with better multi-core performance. The E5 1650 V3 is a fantastic option. The day-to-day usability of the computer would also feel a little bit more snappy. And for the cost of an E5 1650 V3 it's a good option.
@crosstech1
@crosstech1 11 ай бұрын
@podcasting68 depends on the game. The 1630 has higher clock speeds than the 1650. But most modern titles take advantage of six cores. So depending on the game it should run better on the 1650 over the 1630. But if you're really going for gaming performance I would recommend going up to the 1650v4. It's got slightly better single-core performance and a higher clock speed out of the box

@podcasting68 but honestly any of those three chips would be pretty decent for gaming. I have an overclocked 1650v 3 in my system. On an MSI motherboard I have that water cooled and overclocked up to 4.7 gigahertz. The thing is stupid fast.

While it was nice to be able to multitask a lot, it really was overkill for what i really needed. I lose 8 cores but gain almost double the clock speed.

Make sure you install the Intel TBT 3.0 driver if it won't clock up to 4GHz single core! I feel your pain. I used a 2660v3 for a long time, and its ten cores were great for many things...but in gaming it often came up short. Enjoy the new Xeon!

Not at the moment. Head to the Dell website and go to the product support page for the Precision Tower 5810 (the same system I used for this). Under the downloads they have a version of the Intel TBT 3.0 driver that works with v4 Xeons; it's not Dell-specific so it should solve your issue.

At stock they all are very similar. The E5-1660 v4 clocks 100 MHz higher than the i7-6900K, the E5-1650 v4 clocks slightly higher, but with less cores. Now the real question is, how well do they do when overclocked. It should easily be possible to put the i7 on 4.2-4.5 GHz Would be interesting to see that added to the comparison, as someone interesting in the older platform would also look into getting the most out of the hardware.

@doesitgame 15 күн бұрын
I actually did throw it on a proper X99 board and OC’d it - it struggled to do more than 4.2GHz, and wouldn’t hold RAM speeds over 2800MT/s. And while it was better than here, it got pretty well demolished by a less expensive Erying ES setup; there are also 10600KF or Ryzen 5000 combos that are, for most of the world, similarly priced to X99 + 6900K and will also run laps around it. So while it got better, it still isn’t a great value proposition in 2024. Especially when the 5960X is like 1/3 the price on the same platform and can usually be OC’d to or past the 6900K.

Massively defeats the value proposition, though. A Dell or HP full system with 1650v4, RAM, PSU, cooler, and chassis fans can be had for like $150. In contrast, even a midrange secondhand board worth trying to overclock on will run you over $100. Plus $120+ for the CPU and you've already exceeded the cost of not only a repurposed workstation, but also an Erying Tiger Lake i9 combo that will toast a 4.5GHz 6900K.

You are 100% correct for users who have retail X99 boards. I probably should've made it clearer that this comparison was ONLY for the specific case of trying to maximize value by using a secondhand workstation. In North America (where I'm recording) a secondhand retail X99 board costs as much by itself as a decent X99/C612 workstation from HP or Dell. In fact, at the time of writing, an HP Z440 can be had with a 1650v4 and 32GB of RAM for just a little bit more than the price of a bare 6900K. The v3 Xeons are also amazing chips, and I'll have a (stock clock) video up about some of them for a $20 CPU series I'm cutting together right now!

It'll depend somewhat on the game, largely because each one has a different amount of L3 cache. In games that aren't as cache dependent the 1650v4 and 1660v4 outpace the 2667v4 because the former have higher per-core clocks; in games that really hit the cache, the 25MB on the 2667v4 can put it ahead of the 1660v4 (20MB) and 1650v4 (15MB). If I were buying one right now I'd just pick the 1660v4 and call it a day. It's the middle of the road for clocks and cache.

As far as overclocking on x99 goes, nothing beats a good J-batch 5960x. It has more overclocking headroom on the core and cache, and the IMC is not far behind Broadwell. 4.7GHz on call cores is doable with a good J-batch 5960x. Since Broadwell's IPC increase over Haswell is like 3% at most, it doesn't take much to beat it. What kills Broadwell is the IMC is only slightly better and the cache won't clock above 3.7GHz. With Broadwell, 4.5GHz on all-cores is generous, 4.3Ghz is more realistic when it comes to the All-Core clocks, and some people with bad bins can only hit 4.2GHz at the most. Unless you're trying to resurrect a Precision T7800, and tariffs aren't a MN'fer, Ryzen is the way to go.
@doesitgame
@doesitgame 8 ай бұрын
Ha funny you should mention the Broadwell OC ceiling -- I just revisited the 6900K to discuss it being a waste of money even when overclocked, and hours of tweaking settings still failed to get it over 4.2GHz all core. Or 2800MT/s on the RAM. No amount of changing RAM kits, or coolers, or voltages, multipliers, bclk...nothing would get more out. The whole point of this video was supposed to be that the best way to use Broadwell for some budget gaming is to grab one of the fast and cheap (now even cheaper!) Xeons, toss it in an old workstation, and be off to the races...and it looks like we're kind of on the same page there! Then the video took off, lots of comments shouted at me "bUt TeH oVeRcLoCkz!" so I followed up; my conclusion remains the same. Broadwell gaming is best served in old, cheap workstations or not at all, and trying to buy into it as a serious OCing platform these days is money better used on newer hardware! I maaaay have been planning to beat the dead horse with a 5960X showcase vs the 6900K lol

@doesitgame
@doesitgame 11 ай бұрын
You absolutely can...on retail boards. This channel is almost solely about getting maximum value in gaming hardware, and in the case of Haswell/Broadwell (i.e. X99) by *far* the most value is extracted by dropping the top tier CPUs into secondhand workstations rather than by doing a DIY build with a retail board -- a complete Broadwell workstation like a T5810 or Z440 can be had for about the price of an Asus Rampage X99 board -- which means that things like XMP and CPU overclocking will almost never be officially supported. It's a tradeoff, for sure, but if you're on a tight budget the $250 full system beats the $230 mobo-and-CPU combo only. If you have a retail X99 board already, have at it. But if you don't have the board already, don't go out of your way to buy a 6900K; it's a CPU that doesn't make a ton of sense on a workstation (as in this video) and makes even less sense to do a full custom build around these days if you don't already have the platform to start. There's an upcoming video on exactly that last point. Side note: There's a Short posted where the 6900K was retested with 2400MT/s ECC RDIMMs and it does see a performance uplift. And yes, it boots ECC memory, because it's literally just a facelifted 1660v4.

On a retail board, sure, but those are still $100-350, at which point you're in the realm of newer, faster combinations as well. They are certainly great Xeons, though, as long as you can find a suitable value proposition for them. For a workstation conversion, the value proposition is better, but overclocking comes down to XTU support then, and it's hit or miss. So since we are all here talking about it. Which one of these Xeons is best for gaming you guys think? I've installed a few 2650 and 2670 in a few builds. Since I'm a miner I'm partial to the 2699, as for gaming rigs, I'm thinking something with a high clock, and around 8-10 cores.

That's a great question! I can't say for certain (yet), but it's very likely. There's a short up here on the channel where the 6900K gets retested with 2400MHz RDIMMs -- surprise, it boots ECC registered memory! -- and the performance uplift is impressive, showing just how sensitive X99 is to memory bandwidth.

I actually do know! I had to deal with the same issue before making my follow-up to this video! Haswell and Broadwell got a Microsoft-issued patch to prevent one of the hardware exploits from working, but it also prevents the chips from clocking up all the way. The remedy is to rename the DLL patch in your system32 folder to disable it. I'll see if I can find a video walkthrough and link to it.

@doesitgame
@doesitgame 9 ай бұрын
Oooh that's a tough call, and depends heavily on what you had for board and RAM vs what you got for board and RAM. If you had the 1680v2 in a Dell or AliExpress X79 machine and were limited to (mostly) stock clocks and DDR3-1866, the 1650v4 will be a sizable upgrade in most respects. If, instead, you had like an Asus Rampage X79 and were running the 1680v2 at 4.5GHz all core, with DDR3-2133 or -2400, then the 1650v4 may often be a move sideways rather than up. ...unless you got an X99 board like the ASRock X99-WS, which supports both bclk overclocking of ALL chips *and* sports Multicore Enhancement. In that case you can run the 1650v4 at like 105-110 bclk, with quad channel DDR4-3200CL16, and it will wipe the floor with an overclocked 1680v2 in most cases. I say "most" because even though the 1650v4 has an advantage in IPC and instruction sets and memory bandwidth, the 1680v2 still has 67% more L3 cache, and that party trick of the Ivy Bridge Xeon occasionally shows up in games.
@jimmynguyen7017

@doesitgame thanks for the response! I thought all V4 Xeons were locked. You're telling me this specific board will allow even the V4 Xeon's to overclock?
@doesitgame
@doesitgame 9 ай бұрын
All v4 Xeons are locked, correct. But Multicore Enhancement overrides the per-core multipliers to run the CPU at full clock all the time, and bclk (base clock) overclocking lets even multiplier locked chips overclock the same way X58 did. Changing the bclk from 100 to 105 gets you a 5% overclock on *everything*, not just the CPU frequency but also your cache, RAM, and PCIe speeds as well. Naturally stability issues pop up sooner than with multiplier OC, but you can often get the same performance at lower nominal clock speeds. Officially bclk overclocking ended with Westmere-EP, but some board partners like Asus and ASRock extended it through X79 and X99 on a small number of their boards. Conveniently, I just got an X99-WS and have it hooked up to the capture card right now! Have to revisit the 6900K lol

Not at 1080 lowest. I think you underestimate the 5700XT; The only times the GPU utilization crept over 90% were in Apex -- where there's a 300fps cap in the engine anyway -- and Horizon Zero Dawn. Coincidentally, those were the titles where the 6900K came within margin of error of the other two. Fortnite sat around 70% utilization, however, and Borderlands 3 was in the mid 60s. CSGO was even less. I might retest the 1660v4 with a 6700XT or 6800 in the future just to validate the numbers, but I seriously doubt the results change meaningfully in any way. It's entirely a memory bandwidth issue for the 6900K here. There was a follow-up short posted, after finding an ancient Reddit post pointing out that the 6900K is so much a Xeon at heart that it boots RDIMMs, and when doing that with 2400MT/s Samsung ECC modules the improved bandwidth puts it atop the performance stack.
