Does not speak volumes at all. It's sound football. You do not leave an OPEN space for a genius dribbler to receive ALONE. You cover position for position because Xavi was a PLAYMAKER who needed OPEN spaces to assist a dribbler like Messi. Have you ever actually tried to even analyze a football match??

You mean mark messi but if he marked messi xavi is able to dictate and give defence splitting passes to villa, pedro and iniesta which has happened afew times.this system can only work with xavi-iniesta-messi. No one else can reproduce these system. They can literally outpass the whole the team to score.

I was there, watch every game. Not the best era AT ALL. Incredibly boring watching 2 teams dominate football and sometimes Bayern Munich, Chelsea. Actually the worst era in football.

Every era had their dominant teams. But as far as overall excitement I think it definitely was the best era. Classico’s were full of drama. The players looked like they wanted war. It could also be because I’m an 80’s baby I’ve enjoyed it more because I was the perfect age to consume all football with no stress or responsibilities of life. But now it doesn’t taste the same.

If you did not press Xavi it gives Xavi the space and time to dictate the midfield. So in general, the false 9 position of Messi was really a legendary move by Pep to utilize the greatest player on the planet at that time to open up spaces and to force Real Madrid into the back foot.

@@VladRadu-tq1pgyep, 2009-2015 messi was simply magical. But the version of him that impressed me the most was 2016-2021. He carried that barca offence and sometimes even the midfield. I remember him playing as a forward and as midfielder vs Liverpool at Anfield in 2019. He was truly carrying that barca team in 2019.

No wonder he’s such a good coach & understands the game so well now. My man’s was out here getting double, tripled team in a roulette to players like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, etc 2-4 times a season. He suffered 1st hand to gain the knowledge he has now plus being coached by Pep, Mou, Ancelotti etc. He’s so well rounded now from arguably the best defensive coach oat to best possession manager oat plus a mastermind like Ancelotti who always figures out a way to win. This man is set to becoming one of the greatest coaches in the world.

I used watch a lot of Prime Barca and especially El Clasico. It was insane how much Messi and Barca dominated in those matches. Messi at his prime on the ball would just make his opponents insecure. Will he dribble? Will he pass? Will he turn? Will he go left? Right? Will he feint? Will he just take a long distance shot? Will he outpace someone on the ball? He could do it all and that made him so dangerous. You just couldn't predict what he's do.

Xabi Alonso, what a terrific player. One of my all time favorites, being a culé. Him, Casillas, Raul, Ozil, and now Modric. Phenomenal players, can't hate them. Just a gentle reminder of how good Messi is though when greats like him and Ramos talk of Messi this way.

People dont realize that without the ball, messi is ready to run, play one-two and get players out of position. If he get the ball, he could bamboozle players. You can only contain messi. You cannot tackle or stop him. His spatial and tactical awareness is impeccable.
