Made prior to the disastrous accident that destroyed one of two prototypes, The XB-70 Story describes the development and flight testing of the Valkyrie supersonic bomber. The North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie was the prototype of the B-70 nuclear-armed, deep-penetration strategic bomber for the Strategic Air Command of the U.S. Air Force. In the 1950s, the North American Aviation company designed the Valkyrie bomber as a large, six-engine aircraft capable of reaching Mach 3+ while flying at 70,000 feet (21,000 m), which velocity and altitude capabilities would allow the evasion of interceptor aircraft, then the only effective weapon against bomber aircraft.
In 1961, improved, high-altitude surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), the U.S. Air Force's doctrinal change to low-level penetration bombing, the large development costs of the B-70 program, and the introduction of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to the U.S. nuclear arsenal, led to the cancellation of the B-70 program. As such, two prototype aircraft were built, and designated XB-70A; these aircraft were used for supersonic test-flights during 1964-69. In 1966, one prototype crashed after colliding in midair with a smaller jet aircraft; the remaining Valkyrie bomber is in the National Museum of the United States Air Force, in Ohio.

In 1963 I was lucky enough to go on a Boy Scout field trip to Edwards. It was the same week the great Chuck Yeager had his accident and Pres.Johnson revealed the A-11.The B-70 was sitting on the flight line when they took us on a tour of they Hangers. What surprised all of us was the size of the plane.Compared to the rest of the aircraft it was tall and huge for such an advanced aircraft.

and to think that only 20 years before the first flight was middle of WWII. Going "supersonic" was if a pilot took a P51 into a highspeed dive and would begin losing pitch control on horizontal stablizer because flow after shockwave would be nothing for the elevator. and we had men walking the surface of the moon five years after XB70 first flight.

This brings back a lot of memories. I saw this incredible plane in the summer of 1965 at an air show at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth. The air show ended with the XB-70 taking off into "the wild blue yonder". Quite an experience for a 9 year old boy!!

How about that low pass of T38 captured by cameraman at 24:53, it's as of its landing gear could have bonked him on the head. Shortly after you see the gray haired guys shaking hands with pilots as they exit the aircraft. Imagine for them their career in aviation began with wooden airplanes and the "flight test instrumentation" was how good the pilot can tell you about what he can remember of throttle, rpm, airspeed, attitude, etc throughout the flight.

What's cooler - that our military declassified actual flight test audio and video, or people like us are watching it? How are the engines at 100% (and one oversped at 108%) when it was traveling well below supersonic with the gear down? Was it at military power during takeoff? I guess afterburners need to be used Mach1 and above?

Each was only intended to carry a single big GAM-87 Skybolt missile (never produced). In testing, one bay was loaded with instrumentation, and the other was fitted with a fuel tank. Somebody mixed films on this one. This is the flight for certification for continued testing and certification for airline service...THIS IS NOT THE FIRST FLIGHT FILM! We already tested the Valkyrie for several thousand hours before this filmed flight. This is the actual first flight of 2001. There were three made before this one shown

@@machupikachu1085 there were actually 10 built. Three that were actually talked about at the time...top secret at the time”. Now it doesn’t matter . I test flew two of them. I even flew in a comparative flight against the Concord over Arizona. When the Concord snuck over to do a round the world flight.....With the Valkyrie capable of reaching Mach 3 the Concord never had a chance 😃. The other Valkyries were used in limited demonstrations and other purposes around the world. The Valkyrie was never meant to be a bomber or military or assault aircraft of any kind
