Hey backpackers and thru hikers! Today I take a first look at my new alcohol stove, the XBoil system. This is an intriguing offering from a German company that's similar in feel to the Caldera Cone and Stormin Norman designs but with a lower profile. Watch on to get my full thoughts on how excited I am to try this out in the field!

It should have come with two tent stakes...the round ones. There are 4 holes drilled in the stand. Push the stakes through the holes so you can put a pot with a smaller diameter than the size of the stand. You could go with a larger diameter set for your larger pots and still use a narrow diameter pot with the stakes. This is how you can get around choosing the "proper" size support. Your right. Having notches so you can size the diameter yourself is the way to go. Nice vid on a new stove.

Thanks for watching! I did see that and forgot to mention it in the vid so pinning this one! That's a great pro tip for the stove. My small pot does still fit in the feet but my concern is the wind coming up and over. Need to test in the field to see if that'll be an issue on fuel consumption or not.

One note: you don't have to smother this type stove to put it out. Just blow it out like a candle. It cools in seconds!

Great tip! I'll try that. I also found with my Toaks pot that that lid works pretty well also. Thanks for watching!

Nice stove. I like how it is a complete system and how you can put fuel in it and store it so it’s ready for the next time you need it on your trip. I’d most likely lose those little feet though and since it’s sized it doesn’t look like it is interchangeable with various pots if you have multiple.

Thanks Dan! I really enjoy being able to close it up and store additional fuel that won't leak out in it as well. I'll normally bring a 4oz bottle but with the stove it'll fit close to 2ozs more soaked up in the graphite felt! I agree that the feet may be easily lost and the sizing is a bummer. I definitely worry about wind being an issue for my smaller diameter Toaks pot. This is still the most promising alcohol stove that I've found to date so I'm excited to give it a try in the field!

I haven’t seen this stove before and I’m intrigued. I really like the efficiency of the caldera cone, but found it too awkward to carry as it didn’t fit in my pot. This reminds me of the toaks windscreen, it appears to function in the same way, but I like that the Xboil is one piece. Definitely worth checking into. Thanks for the great review.

Looks like a somewhat fancy wind screen with a simple stove. It might be worth about 25 dollars in my opinion. Not bad. Boil time is pretty good but a simmer ring would have been nice for that kind of money.

@DaveOffGrid 28 күн бұрын
@@fire7side That's exactly what it is! I agree, should be cheaper but they do have a unique design. Simmer ring would be nice 👍 I've been enjoying this stove in the field. Does a decent job at blocking the wind!

That is a very nice, compact little stove & good presentation but l'm more bushcrafty. I have trust issues with people whos cook pot isn't burnt black from hangin over a fire 😂👍🇨🇦

Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching! I've tried a smaller diameter pot and while it still works I'd recommend the properly sized pot. Seems to be more fuel efficient and better at blocking the wind.

This is the 1st time I have seen this "gadget" and based on your 1st impressions I don't think I would trade my 50+ year old Svea stove for anything like this one. It is for a novice camper or someone who wants to heat water on an overnight camping trip, to make coffee and such. I have had my Svea for at least 50 years and during that time I also went through the routine of "testing" other small backpacking type stoves, and this Svea has won out over anything within its size range hands down! I can buy a used Sveas online today for what they are asking for this little stove and I would bet that, if the fuel jet on the used Svea was not clogged with carbon or dirt, it would light 1st time tried. For the total weight of a Svea with a pint carry bottle of white gas or alcohol included being just over a pound or so, it takes up minimal space in my pack and if need be, I have found a surplus heavy-duty canvas "shoulder bag" with which I can sling around my neck for a day trip or attach it to the exterior of my backpack. Spill proof, easy to carry and set up with or without the included windscreen, and it can be "lit" with the heat of your hands wrapped around the fuel tank to create a starting pressure [under certain conditions], and it will generate a simmer heat on up to a full boil heat with an adjustment of the fuel valve, the Svea is the ultimate bare-bones fuel using camp stove ever! Sorry, no cigar on this one, not even a cigarette butt. 💤💤

The pot supports on the flat stock should have been two together to create a shelf similar to the top of the letter H so the slip on feet are higher for that pot.

Looks like a great stove! However, when I think of an alcohol stove in California, all I can see is a wildfire waiting to happen. Seems a little pricy too. Look forward to seeing you use this on trail.

Thanks Andy!!! I know, you can't even purchase denatured alcohol in this crazy state anymore. REI canceled their Crown alcohol stove fuel for sale in this state. However, when there aren't limitations I'll still be taking this out with some yellow Heet. Hope to take it out soon!
