Great DIY. Just did it today. Used upsiren UX Pro Ultra putty and upsiren UTG-X paste. Made a big difference. Heat coming out of the console is noticeably warmer and fan does not spin faster than idle. A lot more heat transferred to the heat sink.

Wow man, straight to the point and the best Xbox disassembly video I've seen so far. I saw several videos and now I understand that those people have no Idea what they are talking about. Someone even showed in the video that you have to stick something into that disc eject hole. Even I know the purpose of that hole, and bunch of other wrong stuff. It's pretty obvious that you do that job on a regular basis. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I’m so excited that there’s a video that actually shows where the screws go back in and explains how things come back together instead of just taking it apart thank you so much for those. I had to replace the HDMI port in pretty sure I messed up the whole board because I don’t know what I’m doing but I’d rather not but I can pay $200 call fixer because I might as well buy a new one at that point.

I'd definitely buy a new one and sell the old one for donor parts, but not the whole thing at once, but part by part. In that case, you can earn up to $250. Only the SSD costs about $100. When the whole broken console is usually bought for a maximum of $100.

Great tear down. I think he missed an important highlight when taking out the fan. The middle bolt has blue lock tight on it. It’s a pain in the ass to get out and if you got lower end t8 tool it gets stripped easily. I had to use pliers because the screw was so hard that the torx tool stripped it.

the reason you often see the "dollop" or "line" applications of thermal paste is because it's being done on CPUs with integrated heat spreaders, so the DYE is actually fully covered, it's just the edges of the heat spreader that aren't. Which doesn't matter. But yeah for a bare dye like the Xbox or a GPU you absolutely want to spread the compound to make absolutely sure there's no dry spots. With an IHS the dye itself is a lot safer because it always has that integrated heat spreader to pull heat away from it where as dry spots on a bare dye there is no where for the heat to go.

I read a comment on the 1x replacement video and i read that you started to use this thermal putty now and not those thermal pads. I would like to know how thick should i make the thermal putty "dots" for my xbox one x ( RAM, mosfets and southbridge...) or the best way to apply them so that there are no gaps.

Very concise, teardown. I wonder how much lower Temps you get using thermal grizzly vs the stock thermal paste. I know it'd be hard trying to get an accurate reading without thermal probes. Just curious what it theoretically could do. Thank you for the video.

This is a typical paste and pads replacement that we do on a regular basis for clients who bring consoles with overheating issues and noisy fans. After the replacement, the temperature of the heatsink increases by 5-9 degrees Celsius, indicating that more heat has been transferred from the APU and other components to the heatsink.

Thank you for the comment! There were different revisions of the console, and who knows why Microsoft decided to get rid of that cover. Maybe they just wanted to make it a bit cheaper or due to some parts shortage, but anyway, it's not gonna affect the console's performance or lifespan in any way.

Thank you for the comment. I've provided the link with free delivery to any county in the description below. It's not that easy with the Series X. I've made an upgrade video for the One X, where I replaced thermal putty with thermal pads. However, nowadays we have excellent thermal putty that outperforms most thermal pads on the market. The issue with the Series X is that you have to use a variety of thermal pads with different thicknesses, and they should be highly compressible. The harder the thermal pad, the higher the thermal conductivity. Therefore, if you use soft thermal pads, you will compromise the cooling performance of your device.

When that video was made, 12.8w/mk was the best thermal putty on the market. Of course, opt for the one that offers the best thermal conductivity. The heatsink in the Series X is perfectly capable of dissipating high levels of heat.

Why do we put oil in a motor and thick grease in bearings? The thermal putty and thermal paste have different density and are not interchangeable at all.

@@ElectronicsComputers Thanks my friend, some people say you can´t recover a Xbox SDD partition, I guess it doesn´t work because of OSU update file, you must match the same version of the OSU, as an example, if I opened today my XSX and cloned the 1st partition for backup in case of future failure, I also need also to download the available OSU of today to keep it with me, because in some months apart, if I replace the internal SDD with a newer one, I will restore the partition, but the OSU will be of a different version, so partition will not match the version of the dashboard when it was first cloned, and hence not boot, is not a perfect clone because partition and dashboard are not the same, hence not working, I guess this is the reason people can´t recover SDD, also a new approach don´t know if possible before opening the console, download the available OSU file, try to reinstall the operating system, which will rewrite the keys for that particular OSU file and matching keys in the hidden partition and clone the partition, which will guarantee probably 100% success I guess.

@@Viggen66 Yes, I always recommend performing an offline update before disassembling the console. There's a good deal on external Seagate Storage Expansion Card 2TB on Amazon, so I wouldn't even try to upgrade my own console. Just by a card, plug in and enjoy.

Thank you for the comment! It's hard to determine exactly when the stock thermal paste deteriorates. I've repaired Xbox consoles that were about a year old, just out of warranty, and the paste was already dry. I replaced the thermal paste in my own Xbox six months after purchasing it, and it was already pretty bad . The thermal putty lasts for several years, but while you're inside your console replacing the thermal paste, you might as well take advantage of the opportunity to replace the thermal putty with something better. After three years, I'm pretty sure the console has accumulated a lot of dust on the heatsink, and the performance of the thermal paste is likely quite low.

You are the reason i even decided to open my box and order a thermal paste, didnt get no putty tho... However i smudged the older one together just a bit cause that would again cause it to spread on the surface nicely after the chasis been screwed in tight. It wasnt dry and was gooey enough so i guess it would work... The only thing im worried about is that i have slapped a TON of thermal paste on that chip ... Its working better than new rn so may be its a rare W for me🤔

@@adrian_s9849 cause my putty was still gooey and not dry, if that's the case for you too then please make sure to smudge it up back again because if you don't there will be gaps between the elements and putty and your xbox will die out of heat. After smudging it on the surface it self again, then screw in the chassis

Approximately what is the w/mk value of the green thermal pads used by Microsoft? Because I couldn't find the upsiren pro paste you used in my country. I asked at least to use a better pad than the existing pads. For example, do you think it would be enough to replace it with a pad of 8 w/mk?

I'm pretty sure you can get that thermal putty with free delivery to your country from Aliexpress. The links down below. I don't recommend using thermal pads in that console because there are non-standard gaps between the components and the heatsink. In theory, you can use highly compressible pads, but they have terrible thermal conductivity. The harder the thermal pad, the higher its conductivity. Therefore, Upsiren U6PRO thermal putty is the best solution available on the market, as of today.

I repasted my Xbox series x tonight my Xbox has a plate over the xclamp and it was a pain to get off, I chipped a chip/capacitor by it but it still works thankfully so I didn’t rip it off the Sauter. It runs cooler and might last a little longer. Your video is very helpful I did everything fine except I struggled with the metal covering the x clamp but the paste was hard and very dry. Thanks man.

Theres some blue thing on the heatsink which I'm guessing is the thermal pads/putty but one of them is like kind of ripped off/ looks bad. Is that why it's overheating and crashing? My games are dashboarding

@@eljaibas16 If you didn't remove the shielding under the heatsink, there's no need to replace the thermal putty. The reason for replacing it after disassembly is that thermal putty may not achieve a 100% perfect contact with the heatsink or some components. If you choose not to replace it, at least reshape the old one.

@@ElectronicsComputersturns out the heatsink it's different from videos I've seen, the shielding it's incorporated into the heatsink. Maybe mine it's a newer version from what I've seen. But God damn does it make a difference, so much quieter and cooler using MX-6, (same thermal putty even though it was a bit dry, but the paste was hard as a rock)

We use Upsiren U6 PRO in our repair shop for all types of equipment and it works great. It's definitely not worse than the original green putty that used for Xbox consoles, maybe even better.

Before you get to motherboard chip press. I have a huge head shield on. Which looks soldered onn. Could you explain how to remove this. It was not even in Ur demo

Only a first batch of Series X came with that shielding. It's not soldered, just pry it with a screwdriver or a prying tool.

Hi friend. This is the best tutorial I have ever seem for Xbox Series X. I'd like to know about the the termal putty. Do you know How long does It last? I live in a country where the temperature is around 26°C, 34°C most of the year in my region. I've never used this thermal putty before, but I bought one from the link you shared here. The original thermal putty lasts for about 5 years, and I wouldn't worry about it much. The main issue is with the thermal paste, which is terrible and dries up pretty quickly (in about 1-2 years). It's not even close to high-performance pastes like Thermal Grizzly. If you decide to replace the thermal paste, you'll need to either reshape the original thermal putty or apply a new one. UPSIREN U6 PRO also performs better than the original thermal putty. To conclude, there's no need to replace it unless you want to replace the thermal paste. Together, these thermal solutions will provide decent thermal transfer to the heatsink, which can have a significant impact on the console's longevity.

Just ordered the thermal putty. I already have some paste. I figure this is an easy fix. I already did pads and paste on 5 3090's.

Could be overheating, some other hardware issues or simply dying SSD. I don't recommend using thermal pads in that console because there are non-standard gaps between the components and the heatsink. In theory, you can use highly compressible pads, but they have terrible thermal conductivity. The harder the thermal pad, the higher its conductivity. Also, there are different thicknesses between various components and the heatsink. Therefore, Upsiren U6PRO thermal putty is the best solution available on the market as of today.

You needed at least 40 grams of paste for the whole thing. But I recommend buying 50 grams.

Thanks for the helpful, super guide. Series x, was running hot, fan ramping up. Bone dry, thermal paste, very dry putty. I replaced the thermal putty, with 1.5mm, thermal grizzly pads and paste. So far, great results. All thanks to you. 😉

No, first of all UPSIREN U6PRO has better thermal conductivity and second of all those pads are not easily compressible so it basically wouldn't work perfectly in that particular application. If you find some soft pads it will work but those pads have the worst thermal conductivity. So, thermal putty is the way to go.

Thanks for the video - i completed the steps but i am experiencing freezing after about 15-20 minutes of gameplay while the front light blinks until i push the power button to turn it off. If if try to turn it on shortly after, the power light comes on, it doesnt load the home screen, and then it shuts itself off after about a minute or so. If i unplug it, wait about 10-15 minutes, and plug it back in, it'll power on and allow me to play game again for about another 15-20 minutes. I have tried everything from clearing cache, system reset, offline system update via USB, and burning sage. Any ideas?

@@cupofjoe222 It's hard to diagnose such cases. First of all, I would make sure that it's not an overheating issue. If you replaced only the thermal paste but didn't replace the thermal putty, then the VRAM and MOSFETS can overheat and fail. Once the heatsink is removed, it won't make reliable thermal transfer from the component to the heatsink via thermal putty. You have to replace it or at least reshape the old one. Second, I'd check the SMART of the SSD. Then I'd check if the power supply provides stable current and voltage under heavy loads. I'd also check the power rail that powers the APU chip. There could be a dead MOSFET. If one of the MOSFETs in a phase fails, the APU can still function under normal conditions because the other phases can compensate to some degree by sharing the load. However, under heavy load conditions, when the APU demands more power than usual, the remaining functional phases might not be able to supply enough power. This insufficient power delivery can cause the APU to become unstable and potentially freeze or crash. As you can see, there are a lot of things that can go wrong, and without checking some key points, it's hard to say what's going on.

ps5 usses liquid metal which you may not want to deal with. if any of it gets on the pcb, it could short out components.

If you bought two 20 grams containers, then almost all putty will go to replace the green thermal putty. It's very important to apply the right amount or slightly more on the memory chips and VRM components.

Both have pros and cons. In some cases, we can replace thermal putty with thermal pads, while in others, we must use a specific thermal interface. For the Xbox Series X, I highly recommend using thermal putty because there are nonstandard gaps, and you would need a variety of pads with different thicknesses. Additionally, to make thermal pads work, you would need to use soft ones, which have very poor thermal conductivity. Therefore, thermal putty is the only proper solution for that particular console.

I used alkso upsiren thermal paste on cpu (hope it was good choice, it was not thermal putty). Is it normal that now xbox pull out so much hot air? I hope you used regular thermal paste on the APU, not thermal putty! If your console generates more heat under the same load, that means your upgrade has yielded positive results, and more heat from all components is being transferred to the heatsink. Good job!

Si el ventilador funciona a su máxima velocidad, podría ser debido al sobrecalentamiento. Si no es así, las probabilidades son que el problema esté en el SSD. En primer lugar, intentaría hacer un reinicio completo de la consola y reinstalar todos los juegos; no perderás tu progreso en el juego, ya que se sincronizará desde tu cuenta de Xbox. Si esto no ayuda, conectaría ese SSD a una PC y verificaría su estado de salud. Asegúrate también de que la consola no se esté sobrecalentando.

My xbox fan sounds like a small jet engine, I've replaced the fan itself but made no change, I've cleaned the internals but no change. Will replacing the thermal paste reduce the noise the fan makes?

After two years of console use, the thermal paste on the APU is definitely dry. Once you remove the heatsink, you'll need to replace the thermal paste or at least reshape the old one so it can make proper contact with the heatsink. If the thermal paste is not soft and greasy, then it's time to replace it as well.

That solution is a bit pricey but works pretty good. We've been using Grizzly Kryonaut for many years in our service and that paste lasts for many years without loosing its qualities. But in reality any good thermal interface will do its job better than dry original paste.

No, and there's no sense to do that. The thermal conductivity of Grizzly pads is just 8 W/mk when Upsiren putty paste has 12.8 W/mk and it's super easy to apply.

Anyone who is serious about cooling uses grizzly. While it does dry out faster it still holds a lower temp longer, especially on consoles because it was designed for GPU's and that is the part of the chip that gets the hottest with these consoles. The APU that AMD designs is awesome but very bad for longevity. if you compare the amount of time a CPU will last without a 3D accelerated GPU built into it, to one that has one, the one without will run decades compared to the other only running years. if the chips were sperate it would triple the lifespan of the consoles but who knows maybe thats the point. I havent seen a console built with cooling in mind since the OG Xbox.

There's extremely nonstandard thickness between all parts. So to make it work you'll need highly compressible thermal pads which have very bad thermal conductivity. I suggest using Upsiren U6 PRO ( the link in the description), thermal putty doesn't look as beautiful as thermal pads but it does a great job transferring heat from the components to the heat sink.

The fan noise became louder and fan works on higher RPMs for a longer period of time or all the time. The console turns off during the game play. As a result of overheating, you may see some artifacts or visual anomalies on the screen.

well, in my case, I've had the console since launch (nov 2020), and recently, in the last year, it's been getting louder and louder to the point i can hear it with my headphnes on! so i just finished replacing the paste with this video, and my thermal paste was VERY dry like cookie crumbs, but now it is back to being just about silent like it used to be.

I turn on my SX , theres nothing on screen and then after about a minute it automatically shuts down. Im guessing its the heatsink but would anyone else have any educated guesses for me please.

If there's no video signal output from the console, I really doubt that you have overheating problems. It could be anything. I recommend connecting the console's SSD to a PC, checking its state, and if possible, running a disk check to fix any errors.

I'm pretty sure that the console will die before that thermal putty dries. There are only two reasons why you should replace the original paste: if you want to replace it with a higher performance thermal putty, or if you have disassembled the console. In the latter case, you can also reshape the original putty so that it can make proper contact with the heatsink again.

Original thermal putty is pretty good and will last for about 4 years. The problem is that if you disassemble your console for example to replace the thermal paste then I highly recommend replacing the thermal putty as well. Because that thermal putty won't have good contact with both parts and won't have the same thermal conductivity. At least try to reshape the old putty slightly if you don't want to apply a new one.

Kind of risky but it's your call. In case if you notice that the fan started to work on higher RPMs (APU overheat) or some artifacts, such as distorted textures, flickering, or strange patterns appearing which means the VRAM doesn't get a proper cooling, replace the pads immediately with the thermal putty.

So, I presume you bought a used console, right? If so, I'd start by checking the health of the SSD. Connect it to a desktop computer, or a laptop if it has two M.2 slots, and check the SSD's SMART status. If it’s bad, you should immediately back up the first boot partition of the SSD. I have a video on how to do that and how to replace the drive. If that partition gets damaged, the console becomes unfixable. If the SMART status of the drive is good, I'd start checking some key points on the motherboard, but it's hard to explain in a message. So start with the SSD.
