‪@jobass‬ Thank you for demoing this pedal!
• Caline CP-60 Wine Cell...
This pedal was given to me by Caline Technologies as a thank you for helping out with the CP-81 voltage/noise issue. This is my review of the pedal. This pedal is actually an awesome, inexpensive, & useful preamp DI pedal!
There is an RC4580 op amp driving the XLR, a 4558 op amp driving the 1/4" buffer circuit, and the drive circuitry is two TI074C quad op amp chips. All very good quality parts!!
This is not a true bypass pedal, contrary to what the website says. You need 9 volts powering the pedal in order to pass any signal through, even if the pedal is disengaged. The 4558 op amp runs the buffered 1/4" in/out, and the footswitch bypasses that circuit from the drive circuitry. It's not a big deal, but in the traditional definition of "true bypass" this pedal is not.
The XLR is a genuine electronically balanced DI output. There is no ground lift switch because Pin 1 is isolated from the case. The DC negative is also isolated from the case. This may explain why a switch was never part of the design. The 1/4" jacks are grounded to the case, and there is about 11 kohms resistance between DC ground and XLR pin 1. This is typical for the design.
I would say this pedal is a good clone of the Sansamp Bass Driver DI pedal, maybe not as gritty or have as many features. It is a clean preamp with plenty of flexibility in tone control for a two band EQ that boosts and cuts. It def has cabinet speaker emulation on the XLR which is a nice feature.
Bottom line, buy this pedal!!

Great video! thank you so much. I have a question: From what I understand, these so-called 'preamp' pedals for guitar and bass are not actual preamps, in that they don't raise the guitar signal to line level, they seem to be more of a tone shaping device than a traditional preamp. Would that be an accurate description and can you comment on that? Thank you
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct, tone shaping. The 1/4" is instrument level, and the XLR out is mic level. You need to plug the XLR into a mixer to get the line level you want.

It gives you a different tone it doesn't necessarily make it better which is subjective. You likely have a 9 volt or 18 volt active two band or three band EQ. That alone is very powerful of a tool. This pedal will do a much more detailed EQ curve than just a 2-3 band giving you a more mid scooped but mild overdrive tone. The metal collets for the 1/4" input and output jacks need to contact the case in order to be grounded. Otherwise this is what I found causes the noise. Just scrape a little bit of the powder coat paint around the edge of the jack hole and then reinstall the collet with the washer. @@MartinMartin-yi9to Yes correct that is what I said in my previous comment. Many people seem to mistake this pedal as a preamp pedal but it is not. I really wish this pedal sounded good. Did they use the incorrect taper on the pots? Like they went linear when it was supposed to be log, or visa versa? My drive knob does nothing until the last 1/8th inch, then it starts to drive, but the noise gets out of hand. For a bass head pedal, to run straight to PA, what is this pedal supposed to be clean driving? The mixer? Mixers, especially modern have quite a bit of clean headroom. It doesn't make sense to me that this would be intended to be a clean driver for bass. Of all the pedals I've bought over a lifetime, this is the one pedal where I questioned if the knobs/pots were actually connected to the circuit board, because of huge sweeps on the knobs, and several knobs in concert, with almost no change, or barely imperceptible changes to the bass sound. Okay, so the pedal has some quality opamps, and other components... It means nothing to me if the pedal itself sounds bad, undriven, no flavor..

Depending on what you are looking for the pedal to do i guess. There are B20k pots in this pedal, so linear taper. If you listen on headphones the mids are scopped and the bass/treble is slightly boosted. There is a drive sound, but its not aggressive in the slightest. If you are looking for overdrive gritty tones this pedal wont do it well. I think the original intention of the engineer was to have a basic preamp pedal with a lot of headroom. There are other pedals in their lineup that would be a better choice for overdrive gritty tones. I can tell you that the knobs do have an audible effect on the tone. I agree the drive knob you need to turn up almost all the way to really get an overdrive distortion type of sound but it's not a very good one.

No 9v power adapter? Wow, that's something that all pedals should come with new. That's something that is a must with me, no plug in power adapter no bueno.

Unless it's a specialized voltage other than 9 volts many pedals are not including them. The thought is that you will be putting them on your pedal board which should already have a power supply to run it. It's the same argument as a phone charger included with new cell phones, some of them don't include it

@@Bassguitarist1985 Nah, exactly the same, there's 3 versions of the black Sansamp DI, this is the same as the first. The smallest footprint VT Sansamp has the same 6 controls as the black one as well. Caline says Harmonics rather than Presence and Mix instead of Blend. It's a better copy than the Behringer, sturdier, quieter and nearly has the Sansamp's heavy stones. Worth every penny, just needs a paint job. 🙏👍❤️
