Furman Power Conditioner: Dimmable LED Modification

I wanted to get more light output from the dimmable lights on my Furman Power conditioners. Unfortunately it was not a plug and play mod. The short answer is the dimming circuit is a leading edge type with a triac. They work great for halogens and incandescent bulbs, but not LEDs. This is because the triac component requires a minimum load current to turn on its Gate. LEDS are super energy efficient and present almost no load current. The simple fix is to add 20 kohm 5 watt resistors to the light tubes in parallel. This will load down the triac with enough current to turn on and smooth out the level of dimming when you use the knob. I went with a 5 watt resistor because the resistor will get warm, but not overly hot. 20k ohm dissipates about 0.7 watts at 120VAC, and a 5 watt rating makes sure it does not get too hot for comfort. I did use 2 watt resistors in my other Furman, and while that works the resistors get very hot (150F) that I didn't like. I put two of those in series for 40k ohms and it worked fine, though the dimming knob did not have as smooth response to the dimming levels.
Bottom line, great mod, but annoying and more difficult to do because of an antiquated circuit design and the disassembly procedure that most may not be comfortable with. Any questions please leave a comment!

May I ask, why you did the repair mod in this video versus selling the one you have and buying a newer model that works with LED bulbs stock?

Halogen bulbs are incandescent bulbs. The filament is what is the 'incandescent part'. A halogen bulb simply uses halogen gas inside the bulb to allow the filament to run hotter and therefore 'whiter' while keeping the suicidal tungsten particles jumping off the filament from sticking to the inner glass wall of the bulb and reducing the bulb's brightness and redepositing the tungsten particle back to the filament. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Incandescence is the emission of electromagnetic radiation (including visible light) from a hot body as a result of its high temperature. The term derives from the Latin verb incandescere, to glow white. A common use of incandescence is the incandescent light bulb, now being phased out. Incandescence is due to thermal radiation. It usually refers specifically to visible light, while thermal radiation refers also to infrared or any other electromagnetic radiation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incandescence

Actually I didn't solve the problem that way either... I just add an incandescent light in the circuit so the 2 LEDs can work properly

So a couple things: 1. Looks like the link to the bulbs shows the "unavailable", any other suggestions? 2. Do you have a link to the smaller blue Load Resistors? And when you say 40k are you saying 40k in each tube? If so you installed them in series?

The 20k blue resistors are smaller wattage. I think 1 watt. Id stick with the 5 watt. They will not get very warm at all. I put one 20k 5 watt in each tube. @@bernercalito8422 basically a 20k ohm 5 watt resistor is connected between the hot/neutral wires going to each light. It loads the triac down enough in each light to dim them properly.

@@bernercalito8422 only if the hot and neutral are reversed. Hot goes to the tip and neutral to the base. This is how house wiring is setup. In practice though it shouldnt matter as the circuit is VAC not VDC.

Furman has been making a fortune selling boxes of air…. There’s literally less than three dollars of electronics between the wall and your gear, it’s just a super expensive power strip, no better than what you get for eight bucks at Walmart…

@@marvindiyco2377 I’m an electronics engineer for one of the largest manufacturers of electronics on earth, it’s not an opinion, it’s fact… open one up and look inside… I’d love to debate with you in great detail the exact technical reasons why I know this… Just because everyone is using them doesn’t mean it’s not 4 dollars worth of protection, protection that’s in almost everything already by law, such as the metal oxide varistor, that provides that overvoltage clamping is in nearly all devices and they are about 13 cents each… So you’re paying $185 for a 13 cent part, and the rest goes in to a case for it and the biggest expense is the marketing…

@@marvindiyco2377 Unfortunately I can’t say who I work for, I have an NDA, but we make things you use everyday. If you want high quality power, check out PowerVar or Chroma… I don’t work for either… Monster has the same marketing as Furman… It’s decent stuff, but it’s not doing much for you until you spend around 4 grand, their $200-$1000 products are just glorified power strips… It’s disappointing that they don’t even include noise filters on the $250 products, a good quality filter costs around 6 bucks… to me that’s just criminal to charge 100 to 1000 times the components value while making your customers think it’s doing something it’s not…
