Mikhail Pletnev's performance of this concerto in 1991 has something I can't describe that stands out from all the other versions I've listened to, I can also enjoy other versions, but I always come back to this one.
33-year-old Mikhail Pletnev plays Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in b flat minor, Opus. 23, with Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev.

21:04 Second Movement

This man possesses the type of smooth transition that most people will never master in a million years. It shows not only work ethics and discipline but also natural gifts. He has a sense of rhythm that makes one want to get up and live. What a gifted soul. This is a bright star! :)

A performance of real individuality and style. The numerous 'interpretive touches' are fascinating in their spontaneity and the main cadenza of the first movement is like an improvisation. Pletnev's technique is effortless and gives him the ability to respond to the inspiration of the moment. Tchaikovsky's great work sounds fresh and new. Other performances that shed new light on this very popular concerto and lift the music off the page are 'live' accounts by Cherkassky, Horowitz, Cziffra and Lang Lang.

Frederic, you are right. Not an easy piece to pull off. The piece must have power and grandness, but suffers if it is overblown. Pletnev brings a lightness, almost Chopinisque, and virtuosity.

Agree. He does not only knows his part, he understand the whole work, each instrument part, he knows each one´s roll, full armony, trempo, perfect ensamble, is like he has the WHOLE SCORE in his mind and then he makes it music, not like solely a soloist but as a one rich sound with whole orchestra.

This was recorded in 1991 as part of the Tchaikovsky Cycle by Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the cycle was one of the last things credited to that name; in late 1991, the orchestra changed its name to the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. Tremendous performance, all the more impressive when you can see Pletnev's ease of execution. Of course it's not the best. The music is far too great for a single "best" performance to exist at all. Variety of interpretation is what matters, and this concerto has generated quite a range. It is stupid to listen to 30 recordings and compare them bar by bar. It is equally stupid to limit yourself to a single performance, no matter how great. But this one by Pletnev is one of the very few certainly worth returning to regularly. Fine conducting by Fedoseyev, too.
