For XCP-ng, selecting 'Enable thin provision' in the installer means the SR will be formatted as ext3, not LVM. The `xe sr-create` command uses `lvm` or `ext3` types to determine if thin provisioning is enabled.

Just a follow up guys still no issues with installing the hypervisor directly to a usb based flash drive or hdd/ssd. Some people also use CF Flash Cards in niche cases. Have ran all 3 major vendor hypervisors for about 10 years never had a crash. I’ve upgrade the usb flash drives as tech improved. Will say to use usb 3 or 3.1 as much as you can since it’s a significant speed boost over usb 2. On one of my new host I have a BOSS setup which is basically two m.2 drives raided along with my full ssd storage

I'm in the exact same boat. I have ESXi on a Dell PE R510 and just picked up a new (to me) R610. I installed XCP-NG first after watching several of Tom's videos, but the most frustrating thing for me is its lack of a native intuitive (GUI) interface. I run OS X on my primary machine, and the only place I have Windows running is on one of my ESXi VM's. I really dislike the concept of having to run Windows (primarily or as a VM) in order to use the admin tools rather than having an all-in-one box. That being said, I did install the XOA per some of Tom's other videos with some mediocre success; I found that while it looks pretty, it was a lot harder to follow around for a noob like myself who only had experience with ESXi. At the moment, I've loaded up ProxMox for some initial testing. I like the idea that I can run full-fledged VM's (and even migrate them over from ESXi with reasonable ease) *and* LXC containers natively out-of-the-box. Still, Tom really does make this look slick, right? :) It's hard to argue if you have a readily-available Windows machine for admin tasks.

If you know how to use ESXi, it works almost the exact same way in XenCenter or XOA. Kinda a moot point. What exactly are you not able to do vs saying it doesn't work in an ambiguous statement?

Ayoola Boyejo just Incase you haven’t had chance to check out their website, they are actually doing a better job than Citrix did as far as updates and upgrades are concerned since they have moved to a package mechanism. If you have used Xen Server before and have upgrade it with patches you know how un-fun it is. They have basically cut it down to an apt get which is actually smart. Honestly I’m trying to figure out why Citrix won’t just buy Oliver and the team out because it is clear their developers have ran circles around Citrix own. Honestly Oliver has done a tremendous job and the work itself shows. As always if your fearful of things in the digital age, lab it, test it before production. However this is production ready as it’s already the same source code from Citrix just only changes due to licensing where need be and also xcp branded tools.

I've got a request for your next xcp-ng video. In your video before this one on xcp-ng "XCP-NG 7.4 Quick Install Overview & Xen Orchestra Community VS the XOA / XO Appliance" you mentioned the XCP-NG Center wasn't even an option yet... and you go on to show the differences between the roll your own Xen Orchestra Community VS the XOA. But now that the Center exists can you do a video on a comparison of XCP-NG Center and XO Community edition? I'm not seeing what makes one better than the other. Not sure if Community is worth the effort of installing/updating just so I don't have to fire up a Windows VM to run Center...

Just picked up a used R710 (2x L5630, 32GB, H200, 2x 500GB SAS, iDrac Enterprise), finally got it updated with Firmware/BIOS and seriously thinking about XCP-NG. I was thinking of unRAID at first, but now thinking about XCP-NG now (with pfSense for my house as one of the VM's). Just wondering, as my model came with 4 NIC's (total of 16 1gb ports), would you go so far as to bind each to a single VM for better throughput?

Make sure you know you're NIC's !!! I installed XCP-ng with the managing NIC being ETH1, installed XOA with the curl script and it uses ETH0. So at first I could not connect untill i re-pluged the cable into ETH0, it asks for a required update wich fails as ETH1 is not connected anymore. Very annoying issue.

I’ve been using your videos to start a home lab. I’ve done some IT stuff, but I’m trying to expand. I’ve xen server on a Dell R710, Xen Orchestra loaded, the XOA loaded, and a repository on the server for VMs. I’m trying to set up the iso repository so I can load a VM. I have it created and connected to my Drobo NAS as a NSF. On the Drobo I have a folder for storage, then a folder for ISO’s. I have the nsf connected to the storage folder. When I go into XO and add a disk to the iso sr, it places a .img file in the storage folder. I still don’t know the next step or if the img file is supposed to mount. I use a Mac, and it won’t mount. Any suggestions on where to go or where I’m going wrong?

Unkyjoe's you actually need to explain which type of vm's you have and what roles or apps they use. In general the consensus these days isn't to V2V convert. You should actually sync your os and dettach/attach your data drive. For instance, if you have have Active Directory, you don't V2V that. Infact you don't P2V or any conversion, it's a process that can be done but it's not fun nor is it worth the time involved. Create a new vm, and sync/replicate your Active Directory over to the new hypervisor host. If you have to V2V then leader was VMWares tools that helped convert. my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/info/slug/infrastructure_operations_management/vmware_vcenter_converter_standalone/6_2_0 Citrix stopped publishing a converter tools years ago. support.citrix.com/article/CTX116603 Hyper-V typically people Disk2VHD www.veeam.com/blog/how-to-convert-physical-machine-hyper-v-virtual-machine-disk2vhd.html I'll be honest, unless there is a valid reason, I see little benefit in converting. Also make sure you uninstall whatever hypervisor tools/drivers BEFORE you convert or copy. Otherwise you will hate yourself when it's done.

You read my mind, much easier to create from scratch "a gold image" then clone that image "win7-win10" and then re-create the AD servers I had, which is what I am doing now.
@kristopherleslie8343
@kristopherleslie8343 6 жыл бұрын
Well yea and no. You will run into people criticizing you if you're cloning VM's of Windows 7 and 10. Because you're doing VDI and we all assume you don't have a VDI license hence you have people waiting to see or hear you doing it to report you to Microsoft lol. Just FYI So for your AD servers, your not really doing much. In fact in your own video, you had the right idea, create templates. So if you spend more time creating templates, not snapshots!, you can speed up your delivery of vms after you get get the OOBE done! If you use linux then forget all this licensing crap. That's where you see virtualization shine at it's best to be honest. If you follow Microsoft's best practice which already is to have 2 AD servers, you can add a new one, build it up and replicate to it and offline the original server. That's the best and proper way per Microsoft and for other engineers who have done this year in and year out. We've done the cloning, it breaks. We've done the copying/pasting of the vm's lol that works to a degree but will break due to your UUID. We've done the P2V, it breaks. V2V works and breaks eventually. All of these methods break due to AD being able to get corrupted easily from all those "changes" your making. If your talking an app that isn't a database like AD, then well your mileage will vary :) I look forward to you Joe because you hit the nail on the head with migrating to full Linux like Tom and his crew. I love how you guys are at the fore front of making people see they don't have to live with Windows like forever. You can go to the Penguin just fine :)

Great video. I'm wondering how this stacks up against Proxmox?

Proxmox is a dead horse. Most of their clients went to KVM or XCP. These are facts.

I am on the fence between ProxMox and XCP-NG, @Kristopher do you have any articles to back up this claim or is it just personal experience, if so is your sample size statistically significant? I am not trolling, I am asking. :)

Actually met their CEO and other C-Level's personally. Cool guys at the time. You won't see them mentioned in any of Gartner's top quadrant that I'm aware of. The market leader is and always has been Xen depending on the metrics you're looking at. Technically, Amazon is moving slowly away from Xen to KVM. KVM will be the dominant player eventually, which will entitle ProxMox. Xen is the oldest hypervisor tech by far. VMWare right after that. Xen is used by just about every service you use if you use the internet and it's coming from Amazon. Hence, Xen being dominant. There are other major vendors like Google and Verizon who heavily use Xen as well. Depending on your metrics, you will never see ProxMox hit any major enterprises. Effectively ProxMox is 1% or less of the entire market and it's little more than a hobbist platform. It's still an option, but I wouldn't invest money and time into a sinking ship. One of the other biggest issues is storage providers and innovators, they are also sinking or being brought by other companies and being "poofed" away. The market kinda only has space for about 2 prominent vendors and 2 additional vendors. That being said you have VMWare, Microsoft, Xen and KVM.

@kristopher thanks for the info, I did some research on this since I made the comment, indeed your statement seems quite accurate from the US market perspective. I too am very passionate about hypervisors , building systems as a kid... C64 mods then 286 etc etc .. That moment a bios was shown in a window.. A machine in a machine?! I was hooked. Thanks again for the info.. For my time and money, proxmox was popular esp. In the infosec community of France and Germany, a fringe population several years ago, its from them I have an interest in giving it a go sometime. For now I spent 3+ days config xcp-ng so far.. A little counterintuitive coming from vbox (recent) and esxi 3.5 (2013ish) but I think I am getting the hang of it. Multiple NICs is a pain.. "No IP" means.. Connected? And the client gets a lease.. Uh OK. Wth? Anyway, nerd on sirs and ladies.

For those unaware the same specs from Xen Server are the same specs for XCP. People if you haven’t gone to Xen Servers website and read up on requirements, then don’t be lazy invest in reading on the site! Oliver’s team is basically using the same source code (hence no difference) and only changes are branding and removing paywall / restrictions along with adding improved features.

In nerd terms, you'd have to spend slightly over 500k before you'd hit the limit of 1 physical host. Were talking maxed out spec's. Not exaggerating you'd never hit the limit since your not enterprise at home.

Tom please can you clarify which Xen Orchestra to use please? I installed it using the script, but it says I have to upgrade, and that seems wrong.

I don't think it's full pass through, but I could be wrong. I lost my marbles when Citrix finally got off their arse to include what VMWare had for years and years lol.
