Xenophora solarioides - Solar Carrier Shell

Saving one of my favourite shells for a Christmas release. It even looks vaguely like a squat well decorated Christmas Tree :)
This is one shell that is always exciting to find because it is so difficult to spot one. Found on a sandbar off Gloucester Island, Queensland.

I would have assumed that what looked like a blob of washed-ashore seaweed and muck was just that: a blob of washed-ashore seaweed and muck. I would not have guessed that it was actually a living sea snail! As far as camouflage goes, these little guys are bringing their A game!

How do you manage to find so many live specimens?

Go out with experts Rich :) I spent my youth (and still do) going out with folks who know which dimple of sand or which log is likely to hide a shell. But it is easier these days with youtube to show what live shells look like and where they hide.
