I definitely feel like this was the intended destination for their music all along. Mascara and Tippy Toes sort of eased people into the XG world and then once you were there they served Shooting Star, and from then on the eating has been phenomenal.

Ever since I got into XG Cocona has been the most inspirational to me and for her to make this choice just makes me so proud of her never stopping to be herself!

Oh and I'm a nerd so I have to add that the last time someone had hair half as iconic as Cocona's shaved head was Dara of 2ne1 having an actual side shave way back in the before times. Honestly, XG feels like the first group that are true successors energy wise to 2NE1. Not to compare them, obviously they're hugely different, but they give me that same "I don't give af, I don't care about your standards" attitude in a way that no one else does. Since I'm a big ole' Blackjack this gives me something I've been craving for years. I think a big part of it is that their focus isn't appealing to a sexual gaze. These are female power fantasies they embody, and it really changes the dynamic of how they present themselves. Truly XG are in a category and class all their own.

On the shaved head... In Japan, if a woman cuts their hair drastically, people will ask if she has recently broken up with a partner. Women (especially) may also shave their heads if they have made a very large faux pas/ mistake. They cut off all their hair as a type of self-punishment. So, the normal rhetoric around this feels like something bad has happened. But I feel like the way Coco does it here feels like a reclamation. It is her choice. She has not been forced and nothing is wrong. She is not going to live the womanhood society says she needs to. This is the womanhood she chooses. Deal with it. Or don't. Problems for them. Apparently her parents say she's actually wanted that hairstyle for a while now so it's great to see Simon just be like "Yeah fuck it. We can work with that it's just hair." I feel the first 2 releases were more of a proof of concept to show AVEX this is what we can do, imagine if we had a bigger budget. And it looks like AVEX was convinced seeing the quantum leap in quality starting with Shooting Star. I also agree with your take that there is always an intent behind anything XGALX puts out, visually, lyrically even in the choreography.

it actually is the opposite for me, i usually feel the "inauthentic feel" for most kpop groups. xg is one of the very few groups that feel so authentic to me. i find it hard to watch music videos or performances for kpop, i can listen to them fine, but trying to watch them perform the songs is what makes it hard for me. there are a lot of kpop songs for me that i only listen to. but with xg, i know there's art accompanying the songs so i watch them every time and the mv is tattooed in my mind. each member gives their 110% and they embody the song and performance every. single. time. the passion for the craft and dedication to the concept is on equal levels for all of them which makes them a very coherent group. they know the vision, they see the vision, and they execute perfectly as one.

20:50 I think the shaved hairstyle is in general a very extreme representation of courage. I'm a Male ALPHAZ and I can tell you how f'ing frustrating a bad haircut would do to you. Hair is a shield, a cover and to many, its their pride and confidence. To me, Cocona shaving is head IN AN MV!!! is one of the most courageous thing I have even seen. So in the documentary series we saw how Simon worked on music like Shooting Star and Mascara before the girls even debuted and I just think that he always had the vision for the girls to go off this hard but the budget was limited at the start. Tippy Toes and Mascara were a preview of their skills. I can understand why Avex was a little hesitant to go all in on XG, I mean a group of Japanese girls promoting in Korea (where there’s so much tension between the two countries) singing in English… very unprecedented and the whole thing could have flopped immensely. Simon knew all of this which is why he made sure he created the best team so their talent could speak for itself and it did.
