I think the main idea of the song has to do with the uncomfortable feeling of being controlled by someone, and from there you can interpret it in many different ways. 1. This may imply that women's voices in society are often not taken seriously since they have been heavily dominated by men throughout time. 2. This could also be a story about a girl being gaslighted in a relationship and now she's trying to get over her toxic lover. 3. This could also be XG's statement to anti fans, those who never accept XG's unique image and always want them to follow the usual model... When the control exceeds the limit, it will sooner or later lead to an emotional explosion, and that's why girls say: "Imagine a world where we could play different roles. Where girls be takin' control". The lyrics that follow sound like a kind of irony towards those who used to control the girls, like "Hey, are you happy when I do the same thing to you?" I especially like XG because they leave a little space for all of us to interpret the meaning. Look at all the disputes. XG is doing it well. Some people find it relatable, some offensive, this is what happens when a song is so meaningful and people want to discuss. It may sound different for you, but to me this is an empowerment song for all the people, regardless of gender or whatever. To take the controle of your life and enjoy with imagination just like you did when you're little, playing with your favorite toy. So thankful for this masterpiece.

Ya'll know me by now. I feel that me as a man as a fan of XG i needed to say something about this whole drama about the lyrics. I don't have an issue with it and i don't see how this is an issue. Women in every industry have been told what to do without listening what they had to say. They've been treated as puppets. This song is empowering women and little little girls to get up and speak up until they listen to them. In asian culture women are seen as submissive and this is something that has to change. In Japanese culture its always been this way and they are Japanese lets not forget that. XG since day one they have said they are a different breed and they are here to break boundaries and empower not only women but anyone who feels that their songs resonates with them. If you are a male and you are angered and feel disrespected then you need to really seek for help. The whole double standard narrative in this situation is bullshit because for hundreds of years men have been belittling women in real life and songs. Ya'll been cool with listening to songs that have called women bit.... but a song that says IMAGINE if the roles were reverse hurt your feelings? .. please. I support XG 100% and since i consider myself one of their biggest fans I had to say something about it. I'm not going to let anyone insult my girls and stay quiet.
