All the radios work great and have a good level signal from CFRA 580, but I do think the two Tecsuns sounded good. XHDATA D808 was amazing, Sangean not my favorite here

I like the sound of the 990x radio best. BTW I also enjoyed the sparrows chirping in the background. ☺️

Me too, the signal sounded stronger on the 990x than the bigger one! I think it actually sounds best on the Xhdata but I can hear the AGC sort of pumping which is quite annoying!

The most neutral and pleasant addition to the hardware features the most among all and great dimensions to transport. I choose the PL-990 my favorite.

I am a huge Tecsun fan, but from what I heard I like that XHDATA radio.

Honestly, the XHDATA D-808 blew off all other radios. The audio quality appeared much clearer and pleasing

That PL 990x had beautiful sound!!! The 501 sounded a little soft/quiet, maybe just because it was further away… I love my XHDATA, idk how they’ve done it!!! I’m s like the speaker, while a little high and the static can get noisy on weak channels, but it’s like they made it to stress spoken voice somehow!!! It’s so amazing!!! I can’t wait to start playing and experimenting with my new H-501x as soon as I can!!!

I heard Canada 🇨🇦 is eliminating a lot of MW stations and replacing programming 🤔on local FM stations. I remember CKLM on 1570,,years ago, I think from Verdun near Montreal, is now gone to hear down here. Thanks for the Comparison as I have the Sangean ATS-909X2 and Chinese H-501.

The BBC in the UK 🇬🇧 are closing down a block of their MW transmitters next month also and will be relying on their FM and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) transmitters instead.

Raymond Martin, makes you wonder when broadcasters will grow up and see the value of AM Radio. With all the new radios that have an AM wide setting AM sounds great. Back in the 1970's my husband's dad, a AM Radio station GM, dreamed of radios that would actually show off the potential of AM sound. With Nautel transmitters and digital studio/ transmitter links the potential for great sound on AM Radio has never been better. FM Radio is flawed in that no matter the effective radiated power and tower height coverage from one transmitter is limited to 60 to 70 miles. Line of sight and just a little more. Then you have to get into repeater transmitters which are expensive to maintain in rough weather high wind areas. FM Radio has never been as great as advertised and is still subject to many forms of interference. Not static free at all. AM Radio uses the ionosphere as a natural satellite and stations like CFRA have a great ground wave making frequencies like 580KHz solid gold. Someday AM Radio will be advertised as the new thing as if it were a great discovery by the so called experts at some future date.

Hej Gill thanks for the video interesting comparison between these radio devices. I put on my headphones so i could hear better and yes the Tecsun radio devices and, xhdata d-808 had a better sound or much more pleasant to listen to. On Sangean ATS-909X2 I think the sound is harder more hard. Take care Gill have a nice evening time for bed for me.

The clearist audio seemed to come from the smallest radio, namely the XHDATA 808.

I have the Sangean ATS 909x, since getting that radio, i have used it a Lot at first, to see its quirks. I learned to really dis like it, it spends all it's time in its packaging Box it came in. My PL880, gets a Lot of Play time, so does My PL660. I Just purchased a PL990, I really Like Tecsun radios. I like the Looks of that Tecsun H501X, i may get that one at some Point. But I also recently Bought the Kaito KA 900, as a Emergency radio to play with.

What tone is the Sangean on? I have the Sangean 909x2 and it sounds like yours is set to "Music." Am I right? If so, try the "Normal" and "News" settings. Also using a narrower band helps a lot if I get high-pitched interference. My Sangean sounds better on AM Medium Wave. Also, for Medium wave AM I use the CCrane 2E. I decided on the Sangean about 3 weeks ago for the following reasons: It uses the more common AA batteries, which in an emergency (including power outages)it is easier to find AA. The MP3 player on the Tecsuns is of no use to me. My eyes are not what they used to be and I find the bigger and better lighted Sangean screen is easier to read. I was seriously considering the Tecsun 501X until I found out it also uses the harder to get battery.

I made a 16 inch loop with a pizza box (16 turns of 24 awg magnet wire and 450 pf tuning capacitor) that actually improves reception of the CCrane EP PRO and Sangean PR-D4W which was a surprise. I made a demo video of it with the Tecsun PL-660. It makes the AN-200 loop look like trash.

Sangean is a noisy receiver, especially the new X2. And these sangeans really like to collect interference, tecsuns sound cleaner. By the way, the batteries of the h501 are charged directly in the receiver, and in almost any other charging, so there are no problems.

It shows what a ferrite bar antenna 📶📡 can do. My great Eton E1XM only uses the rod whip antenna 📡😎for MW, and signals are received much weaker on it than on my other receivers with a ferrite bar antenna 📶. Yes, I notice too in certain circumstances, the Sangean ATS-909X2 is weaker on MW. Ray W2CH, WPE2FXT, KBG7077.

Vy interesting to compare four radios , Gilles. Toss up for me between XHDATA & Tecsun 909X, but I'm some what prejudice 'cause I own an XHDATA. Agree that all did at least a B or B- grade, n'cest pas? .

PL-990x has better signal than the H-501X but I'm surprised at the noise level on all of them from a local AM station

I heard the whine interference on all 4 radios. If you change the Tone control on the Sangean to Norm or News setting, it may have sounded like the others. It sounded wide open on the Music setting.

The 501..has more of a stereo type of sound versus the others..I would say second the sangeon..but it all really depends on your taste

The interference on the Sangean is the most irritating. The Pl-990x sounds more compressed than the others, could be mic placement, speaker size etc. Tough test.

Very true, FrancoAC. Treble and bass adjustment could also account for a difference.
