more than being beginners. the challenge is to unlearn what they have spent decades learning - shaolin quan, before they can look right with wing chun. the two schools use very different fighting principles.

No, thats just one of about 10 stories floating around about the origins of wing chun. Everything from Princesses and female monks to red boat actors etc etc. If you look at the actual styles it is obvious that Wing Chun has its original roots in Shaolin Weng Chun.

Type Weng Chun into google, the second link is the wiki link and the third link os hoffmanns weng chun page. They contain most of the info you need. You can also type Weng Chun into youtube here and take a look at some of hoffmanns videos. You will see the similarities between it and wing chun. Both names actually mean the same thing and through looking at the style you can see where the simplified version came from. Weng Chun has a fairly well recorded history as compared to wing chun.

Just checked out that Weng chun . What I can get out of it is there could have been was obviously more the just Ng mui that knew and developed it. Doesn't mean that she didn't exist ,nor does it mean Yim Wing Chun wasn't an actual person. It's is Ip Man's style/section of wing chun that is traced back to Ng Mui. There were hundred's of other people that learned Ng Mui's style not just Yim Wing Chun . For example ,Vietnamese Wing Chun ,Taiwanese , etc. She didn't stay in one place.

it doesnt mean she was an actual person either. Its all speculation. Monastery records are fairly accurate for a fairly long time period.

Someting for you to look into is Weng Chun. Rather than the fanciful story, it is more likely that Wing Chun is a watered down version of Shaolin Weng Chun.

You know the Hakka's claim to have been taught their arts by one of the 5 elders of the shaolin, which Ng Mui is coincidentally the reported leader of.

I'd prefer the monk's block when he performs that wing chun style.

These are gov. Monks..army guys with very athletic qualities. Yes they train all day, and yes they are good. But I would not say they are better than anybody...look at their age? Thai boxers are also fearce fighters. There is so much techniques you can learn before your body gives out. Real effective Kung Fu or Karate is often ugly...and these guys are happy to learn wing chun we can see...Yes, Wing Chun is not fun to watch..but effective...not for movies

Chinese government feared real kung fu because of & since the Boxer Rebellion. Not to mention Shaolin involvement with earlier dynasties .

@FightingWarrior I have heard both "mythologies" re: the origin of Wing Chun. 1.the most famous is the Buddhist nun from Shaolin Ng Mui teaching a girl to defend herself from basically getting raped. 2.That a warring Hakka tribe developed it to quickly teach soldiers how to fight. Either way, Wing Chun has a beginner form Siu Lam Tao which basically means "way of the new forest". I agree with you about Shaolin today; they are compromised by the CCP and are a marketing outlet to make money.

NRG is a true Ninga...Martial arts is limitless...different style suits different shapes and sizes...and all goes down to one thing > "you"! There is no shame is exchanging styles with monks or anyone, that is how so many styles been formed. In fact, wing chun or ving tsun itself have many different styles nowadays...different size teacher teach differently as their personal emphasis is different. Such is the evolution of kung fu but few master the spirit nowadays, too much distractions...haha.

I understand this instructor is good, and Wing Chun is a decent martial art. However, I seriously don't think it could match the arts the Shaolin monks & Wudang priests are practising. I'd practiced Wing Chun, and I had the honor of witnessing Wudang priests in action (learnt a few techniques from them). Theirs are real Chinese kung fu. They can deliver moves that are beyond the speed that Wing Chun artists could possibly comprehend.
