Don't care for IP ratings or stylus, what is a deal breaker is main screen durability. Software issues are a non issue as I always buy Xiaomi models that are 1 model back, you have awesome price and super fast and stable performance. Love my new Mi 12s Pro :D

Hi Chris, I have the Mix Fold 3 and wanted to chime in for the camera preview mode. The mode you demonstrated in the video is intended for the subject further away to see themselves when you take a photo for them. To use the real camera's for selfies and vlogging, you need to first swap to the front camera from the 8 inch inner screen, and then press the outer screen preview button on the top right. This way you'll get all the on screen controls from the cover display.

Great review especially the details on Widevine support with Netflix and Amazon prime. Could you add charging supported protocols like PD and QC versions And the Bluetooth as well such as aptxHD, LDAC.. etc

I know it's extremely iterative, but I'd love to see your coverage of the z fold 5. While it is very "samey", what was improved does give a pretty great experience. I've been surprisingly enjoying it. Love your coverage of all these devices. Keep up the great work!

Honor Magic V2 announcing tomorrow for global release, I think this will be the one to get over the Fold!

Man can't wait for foldable phones to fully mature in terms of hardware and software, maybe 2-3 generations more, and I guess the price would be much more affordable during these times too hopefully. Right now, these foldables especially Samsung's Fold & Flip series are really tempting me to try them out if not for the durability concern.

Great review, I have the phone in the Uk on Vodafone also second EE sim and 5g is working fine. I also get pretty good 4G. Is it your carrier settings? I think your unit might be faulty if your wifi is off as well. Mine is rock solid. You can have the controls on the front. Open up, go to selfie and then click in the top roght, it will then ask you to turn the phone.

Just got my Mix fold 3 a couple of days ago here in Canada. 5G is solid on Bell and Telus Mobility. no issues so far with wifi. I find the cameras to be great. Last night was a full "super"moon and the camera app has a super mood setting. great handheld shots. Other than the tweaking to work around some of the settings everything so far is great.

How and where did you buy it ? Is it on a web site? Please tell us how did you get it.

My wife had this ch brand and at that time we had to sell it because of software bugs, while was put to wakeup in the morning you can't just stop the ringing because the phone does not show the button to tap..or worse never stop from ringing after that and ask for a reboot.Was such a unfinished device...and I se that one is the same.Rafimenent came with great cost and ch wants just the look to sell and make money and go away with it.Samsunk is the new apple like Tesla and John Deere does unfortunately.I wander if FAIRPHONE is good or anything to go to..?! I was planing to upgrade from Vivo X Fold 2 to this, but this review stops me to do so. I dont expected that bad software and camera optimization even Vivo gets it better not mention it has band 20. Others reviewers don't mention that bad software. So they overhyped it a bit. this could be the best fold device. So thank you for that honest review. You saved me lot of money

It really depends on the user. What is a deal breaker for a person is no big deal for another. As for me, IP rating is not important for me because I know how to take care of expensive things I buy. Lack of stylus is no big deal too. The Samsung fold 5, for me is uncomfortable to hold for my small hands. So I'm eyeing either the honor v2 or the mix fold 3

I have the Samsung Z Fold 5, but there's is no doubt that's a beautiful build. It's hard to beat the Samsung ecosystem for me. But this hardware is very nice. Great review, and you know us USA types love that accent of yours!

Watching on the fold 5, wasn't going to upgrade, but it is a very polished finish, except for the same design, it's very hard to find any flaws, it just works

Good review. Software seems real rough. Zfold still best. Most other fold device makers seem to be waiting for Google to do the software for them.

As a Samsung fold owner for 3 years and a mix 3 owner now, the xiaomi is leaps ahead.

Thank you for so honest review and ... the no Android Auto note I moaned about once :) It is important for a lot of people. What a pitty that most CN version phones don't have the European 4G B20 band. However, I see that this one for exemple has all needed 5G bands (at least for France) so in some time it may get better when the 5G is fully deployed. I've heard it is possible to install android auto and google pay afterwards... is it true?

When can we expect a video on honor magic v2?

My only concern with foldables is the potential for the crease developing a spontaneous crack over time as has happened with a previous Samsung fold I had, and I dont mean the screen protector but the actual screen itself. Samsung customer support is so inconsistent too, they refused my repair (blaming the user) whereas other people with the same issue have had it repaired by them, I guess Xiaomi support would be the same.

I agree Samsung still has the best software, i think the Honor v2 has the best hardware. You didn't mention though that the screen of this phone doesn't allow you to multi task horizontally, you can only have the apps open side by side vertically. If Samsung get the next Fold right in terms of the outer display being normal ie 20:9 aspect ratio normal phone screen, light and thin hardware with s pen support on both screen, then that would be a winner device for them.

You forgot to mention Samsung Z fold 5 doesn't comes with a charger in the box 😅 But I prefer bar phones like Huawei Mate 60 Pro, can't wait for that review from your Christopher 😉😁🤪

I wanted to check if telephoto cameras can record 4K. As per GSMArena review, MIX Fold 3 can't record 4K from any of its telephoto cameras, let alone 4K 60fps. Can you confirm if that's true?

The Mix fold 3 gets so many things right and has serious potential! But there are quite the deal breakers, like the lack of global modem and not optimised software experience. On the other hand yes you get great options with a Samsung fold. But they are definitely complacent and lazy with thier design development. Would love to see a comparison of your experience with the Honor V2. Too bad about the Mix 3 Chris! Hard luck!

I do think that they can fix the camera settings not appearing on the outer display quite easily, but it's so indicative of a larger issue: It just doesn't feel like they're prioritizing foldable software. This is there third device now, they're clearly funneling money into R&D, I can't understand why they're cutting corners in terms of optimizing for the hardware!! I know a lot of these Foldable devices are China exclusive, so maybe it's just the opposite of Samsung where they don't have to worry about competing for market share? Samsung don't feel the need to innovate on hardware in the global market, and other OEMs don't feel they need to innovate on software in the China?

Xiaomi should really add more bands and especially band 20 to their flagships. Wider band coverage is part of the specs you would expect on a flagship and the other main Chinese brands OPPO, Vivo, Honor, Huawei and Motorola all have band 20 and wider band coverage in general on their Chinese model flagships. Even for people in China, band coverage can be important as many Chinese people travel to Europe either for business, study or leisure

There needs to be a new foldable form factor, something like a Flip, a square but a lot larger that unfolds to 16:9 ratio. As of now, these folding phones when unfolded just don't do much. Huge black bars on videos, mediocre multitasking, unoptimised software and lacklustre battery life. The companies are just treading water instead of trying out new stuff. I still miss the popup selfie camera that's all gone these days. The punch-holes and under-display cams don't do it for me personally.

So would you take the Vivo X fold 2 over this if you had to chose?

I agree that Samsung design wise and even for the most part hardware wise making the same phone for the last 2-3 years, however other than the outer screen and the cameras I dont really care to be honest. Yeah it should have the cameras of the S Ultra's and a usable outer screen and it would be perfect. Whether people like it or not Samsung has the best UI for the foldables in regards to optimization and bugs. Majority of the things work without any issue and you can see they really optimized the UI to their foldable, they actually took the time and care unlike many of the competition who just slapped a regular Android with a couple gimmicky foldable features and called it a day. I wish they would just do what Vivo does with their foldables, giving actually top hardware in all aspects and an actual usable outer screen, it would be top 1 foldable no questions asked.

Idk what's the strategy of Xiaomi is I would rather a late release with a better software then a brand new phone with some issues especially for this price. Xiaomi is in the top brands yet act here like a beginner such as the nothing phone ... Now Since the major problem here is the software optimization i do hope Xiaomi will do the best with the upcoming updates

*I had a Mi8 china version a few years ago, not having Band 20 wasn't much of an issue then as 5G wasn't readily available then & didn't really use mobile data, I wouldn't get a China version anymore even with a EU ROM.* *Solid hardware, shame about the software, could have been an amazing product!*

After years on iPhone I got a Z Fold 4 and loved it but the Mix Fold 3 is far better. Bigger screen, way better battery life, the main screen is glass not plastic and doesn't even get warm playing Diablo Immortal. No real issues at all so far apart from VLC player not working.

Xiaomi phone isn't available here in the USA l, so what is there to do now?

I would want to buy one, but not supporting all Google features is a deal breaker for me. I have Xiaomi 13 Ultra imported from China, it doesn't run Android Auto and won't let me turn on Google Map Timeline. Also it is missing certain band, which makes it less than ideal for frequent traveler like me. And most importantly, it doesn't support eSIM. When my Fold 3 dies (inner screen is starting to crack), I'll have no choice but go with Fold 5. Additionally, I think Samsung software is top notch. No other brands of foldable phone OS/software would come anywhere close to Samsung's One UI.

Is this indeed locked into the Chinese PlayStore apps?

I have all the controls on the front screen when i am using the back cameras. This is how you do it, unfold the device Open camera app Switch it to selfie camera Press the top right button to use the cover screen.

Android auto and most of the software quirks can be sorted easily with root and magisk modules.

Also I can't connect pixel watch or Samsung watch 5 Pro. Tried everything.

MAJOR PSA if you have GPS reception issues with your Mix Fold 3 - REMOVE the official case included in the box (more specifically the back side with the kickstand) or at least open the kickstand. I have a *gold* Mix Fold 3 and I was at my wits end with zero GPS reception, until I found this. GPS signal reception skyrocketed (going from zero to 50+ satellites) the instant I removed the back case.

Also no Google. Deal breaker. But the Honor Magic V2 is killer.

I to bought the Xiamoi Mix fold3 instead of the z fold5... and this is not click bait...BUT after about 3 to 4 days I sent the Xiamoi Mix fold3 back and bought the Z FOLD5..don't get me wrong the hardware was/is incredible, but after 3 days I realized that the UI is WAY BETTER ON the Samsung Z Fold series...hardware design doesn't matter if the app software optimization isn't up to standards...

Because Samsung just makes a superior product to every other manufacturer while pioneering ALL the new technology to the industry at their own expense both monetarily and through bad publicity. The mechanical improvements on the Fold 5 from Samsung alone are far from just iterative upgrades. The fold 5 is a true human masterpiece but all that being said true competition is what moves us humans forward. Ps: I love the outer screen aspect ratio of the Fold 5 too. I hope it remains because it provides the best of both worlds, with a one-handed experience externally and a tablet internally. Don't knock it until you try it. Plus DEX of course which is used eery day !

Firstly, apologies for any Samsung fold users that may have been annoying and less than cordial to you in the past. They don't speak for all users. The hardware for the Xiaomi and Honor are very impressive and show the next generation of this form factor. Would be great if they had the 5 generations worth of software experience Samsung has for foldables. It's refreshing you acknowledge that aspect. Very much agreed the Z Fold Series outward design has barely changed since the fold 3 with small refinements, and it would be nice to see them make the leap to new designs. That said, it feels like their under the hood refinements are getting them closer to the perfection we desire. They have concepts but not ready yet. Styli, IP Ratings, and sturdy hinges is no small feat for what is still a fledgling phone design sector. Heck there's still naysayers that think foldables would disintegrate if you just look at them the wrong way. In the end its great to see foldables flood the market and capture excitement of non techies. The competition is good for the tech innovation and consumer pocket. Great reviews as usual. I'm enjoying my Robo & Kala 2-in-1 based on your review. 👍🏾

Personally I gave up on folding phones.. we're on like gen 4 or something and the crease is still WAY too visible for me. I'm hoping maybe one of those sliding concepts become reality with no crease to speak of.. one can hope

Yes definitely software for me. When I use something I want it not to annoy me. Hardware wise I can compromise. Not the best not a deal breaker. Just sadder I guess. I can live with exynos 2400 or amd 7940hs instead of 13900.
