Want to learn more about the hobby of RC helicopters? Please visit my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com Common comments about the K123 addressed: 1. What radio are you using? FrSky Horus X12S. 2. Correction. The bars on the boom are not "step rods" as I state in the video, they are VOR antennas. 3. Price? Click on the links in the description to find current pricing. 4. Is this a hobby grade RC helicopter? Yes - you can get replacement parts for it.

That’s freaking amazing. I used to daydream about how cool it would be to have tiny remote control helicopters when I was a kid- now we’ve got sub-6” helicopters, quads the size of a silver dollar. Amazing.

A very comprehensive and articulate presentation. I have a great passion for RC helis, although I've somewhat "cooled off" in the last several years, but recently started flying my 500 class ships again. I'm quite intrigued by the open TX concept and know absolutely nothing about it. Seeing this vid has me thinking that open TX might be just the thing to really fire me up again. Thanks for your work! I'll definitely be exploring a lot more of it!

Nice review mate! 👌 By the way, the 3 blade head is very noticeable in flight in the vid. It's probably due to the filming process though. This model is almost a carbon copy of WL Toys AS350. The WL Toys RTF came with a switchable-mode Tx, which I'd never seen before. Pretty amazing for around $120 (AUD). Sadly, they may have discontinued the line as I don't see them on Ebay now. I'll keep an eye out for this one!

What a great little scale heli. Looks fantastic, you wouldn’t buy one of these for aerobatic flight but more than exceeds that for scale. If I get back into RC I’d like one of these. Fantastic presentation of the review, nice and clear and easy to follow. Will check out more of your vids. Cheers, Alan.

My word, things have come on since I flew my Ikarus Piccolo and Century Hummingbird using a JR 3310 (which i still have !!) - I even had a vac form mould made so I could make and sell AS350 bodies for the Piccolo - but they were so under powered back then it just about made it into the hover ! - this little heli looks the business, especially being CP and tri-bladed

When I was a kid (late 50's early 60's) I had a toy die cast helicopter that I "flew" everywhere I went. We lived in a big city then and I think about how it must have looked to people in the street. They must have gotten a kick out of it. I would dream of having a toy helicopter that could do this. But don't you get bored just zipping it around aimlessly? Try going for a walk with it. Bet you'll enjoy it !
@Rchelicopterfun

Absolutely nothing boring about flying a collective pitch RC heli from a fixed position; right from these cheap little buggers, up to the big electric, gas, nitro, and turbine powered ones. It's all engaging and requires maximum focus. Of course the adrenaline rush with the big ones is a huge fix on its own. And no, no one should ever try walking while flying a collective pitch RC helicopter. It's dangerous, and very much frowned upon. Do that at an RC flying club and they would have your hide.

My first chopper was a 350 class bird I had nearly 8 years ago. For the life of me, could never fly it. Then, started my interest in quadcopters. 7 years and I'm a pretty good quadcopter pilot. Purchased a flybar brushless WL Toys V912 just recently.. I guess my quadcopter skills made it easy to fly. Indoors that is. Today, did some flying around the house outside and nosed it in the ground. Broke a few connection links in the main rotor. I think a combination of the cold temp and losing power. Do you find the collective pitch birds do better with handling the main rotor tilting and gaining speed without losing altitude? Also, I have a rule of thumb on quads... Want to fly outside? Got to go minimum of 2 cell for the power. IMO, anything one cell is just under powered..

1S 500mah packs for these things are easy to find and they are inexpensive. LiPo care will dictate usable life span (storage voltage, how far they are drained down during use, etc). Trashing a good workable micro CP heli as you claim over the inability to source cheap 1S 500mAh LiPo packs? All I can say is interesting...

Hello John, in this video you mentioned that this helicopter would not be good for beginners learning to fly as it has some fragile parts. I have recently gotten into the hobby using a coaxial helicopter (syma s111g) and am looking to take a step up and try to learn to fly collective pitch. Do you have any recommendations for me on which models would be good to start with? I much prefer a machine that actually looks like a helicopter which is why I have gravitated towards the XK models. I appreciate any recommendations that you can provide, thank you.

I cover good beginner collective pitch helicopters to start with on my best RC helicopter page on my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/best-rc-helicopter.html If you specifically want to stick with XK, then the XK-K110 is a great micro sized first CP heli to learn on. I mention it on that page as well as some others, but the K110 is pretty hard to beat in terms of value and robustness. I've done a review on it as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aN95dZVesLm-qZ8.html

Hi John, great video and thanks for your amazing website. I am right now in the point of jump from 4ch to 6ch. I am right now looking for a proper rc radio. Do you think an open tx radio like the t16 or the taranis is it too difficult for a beginner? I really like to thinker with all the computer and coding things. Have you added or planed to add how to use and setup helis in open tx in your ebooks? Thank you so much for your amazing work.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marco. There's no question the Open TX learning curve is fairly steep (at least I sure thought it was); but if you are into that kind of stuff, you might find it a piece of cake. As I recommend to anyone thinking of getting into OpenTX, the best thing you can do is spend a good deal of time at the Open TX university website. open-txu.org/ If the info makes sense and appeals to the inner RC nerd in you, then you should have no problem. I'm about 20 months now into my OpenTX journey and I'm still figuring out cool stuff you can do with it. Just like learning to fly a CP heli, learning Open TX is a "many stages" learning process - my anecdotal experience with it anyways. Collective pitch setup is the same on an OpenTX radio as it is with any radio. Pitch curves, throttle curves, dual and exponential rates, channel output, channel centering, and channel reversing are all the same. If you can setup a collective pitch heli on a traditional computerized radio, you can set one up on a radio running Open TX. The main difference is in how the information is displayed, and the insane amount of flexibility and customization you have the ability to access. As just one example, 32 programmable curves are available if you wish with anywhere from 2 points up to 17. Hope that helps a bit.

Hi John, a little story/question for you. My cousin bought a K123 from Motion RC, but they must have gotten a bad batch. On the first one that I set up and flew for him the tail motor would go out sporadically in flight on only the second or third pack. I was able to land somewhat softly the couple times it happened while flying circuits around my yard. The second K123 he got after the other was returned had the same problem, I set it up, test flew it a couple times just hovering around and a few days later he flew it and had the same thing happen! Except this time it crashed hard and the swashplate popped apart. Any idea on if it would be the motor, or the board? The first one had the wires out of the back of the motor damaged when the factory installed it, the second heli looked fine though.

@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 жыл бұрын
As I said & demonstrated in the review, the K123 is too heavy & underpowered for 3D. So yes the Trex 150x is a better all round heli that covers a larger flying style or the XK K120 or K130 if you wanted to stick with XK brand. Out of the three, there is no question the 150x is the better micro heli, but it costs twice as much.

looks fantastic. how did you set your radio for the model i.e the switches and channels for gyro and acro modes. I've bought the k124 , but stuck in the process of setting up my taranis with irx4. Any help would be accepted.

It's the same as mapping the channels and switch functions in OpenTX to any model in your memory. Channel 5 is what toggles between the gyro/accelerometer selection on XK's line of helis.

Ordered! Can you reduce the head speed at all or would you loose too much control?

Like any CP heli, to a point before you lose cyclic authority or overheat the ESC.

I just got one of these about a week ago and loving it. But I'm curious if you can ease the sensitivity (dual rate?) with the XK Transmitter that comes with it, because indeed, she's a bit touchy.

Yes you can... Like any CP helicopter setup 🙂 I go over the basics of the X6 radio if you are not sure how to program D/R on it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ouCHbNBpnZ-dhJ8.html

Hi I bought an xk123 and use opentx like you, but I'm inexperienced on programming. Could you share the programming file? I use it as a school. Thank you

Hi John!! How could you bind Irangex IR4+ with the chopper?? I made your procedure enterely without positive results! I have the same Tx and External module and this crap do NOTHING!!! Neither on PPM protocol in OpenTx, it used to work on FrOs!!! It's frustating!
@Rchelicopterfun

All of XK's helis use S-FHSS protocol and that is a protocol supported by the multi module and works fine. I just followed the instructions on multi-modules website to pair the module to my horus, no issues in either PPM mode or serial, but serial is superior. Not crap - very powerful and works a treat!

Did the radio say “shits about to get real”. When you turned the dual rates off?

Hello. because this is 3 blade model I´m wondering if I can set up correctly with the instructions in your ebook, I´m new with the CP helicopters and this was a gift so I´m having a hard time with this model. thank you
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, collective pitch setup is universal. Just a little trickier with 3 blades, but you can still fold two of the blades back to confirm zero collective and set your pitch curve for min max collective range using the wedge method.
