Nice! I bought a 82 XL500 in 1983 from Honda brand new the only new thing ive ever owned, I was working overseas, drove it around florida for 2 weeks then stripped it mailed it too myself and got busted, you couldnt ship motors by Military air where I was posted, almost got fired it stayed boxed up for years until I could finally get it put back together, I sold it and bout the 85 XL600 used what a bike.

i know this is old but great info on a project ive been wanting to do for a long time! bought a 84 xl600 from a man and his wife in nh,had the motor completly rebuilt to a 650 ish...lol......absoulty love the bike but its time for some upgrades,i already got the bits and pieces for the rear xr swap know the hunt for the front end stuff begins....great job and if your still around ill be bugging ya for info!!

Can you show some detail on installing the rear brake system after the swingarm swap. The swingarm itself looks pretty straightforward, I'm considering doing it to mine. Mostly not sure about how to deal with the brake pedal.

Do you think 86 CR500 forks would work? I like what you did with your bike just that I don’t have an aluminum welder or welder at all lol I’ve got an 85 XL600R that I’m working on at the moment, got a few more things to do and if I gotta replace anything, might as well make them upgrades

I'm doing the front sway now, mainly due to the inability to replace old xl wheels. How did you go about the rear end upgrade? Did you use the xr shock?

No, I wanted to use the XR shock but I ended up just extending the factory xl shock by welding another collar on top. If you look up my F650 funduro suspension video, I go into detail and I basically did the same thing as that. It's adjustable height as well

I bought a Honda XL600R last week. But since it came with some overdue maintenance I am looking for an easy way to lift the bike. I see you are using some buckets to lift it. Is this solidenough to work on it and how did you lift the bike onto the buckets?

Honestly the bucket is borderline strong enough. If it's too hot out the bucket gets a little soft. In the winter time it's fine though. I would suggest purchasing a decent stand. And I basically just lean the bike over and lift it onto the bucket

Somehow even after listening to the video twice I'm missing the switch. Is that an L bike that you are putting an R front end on. Or is it an R bike that you are putting an L front end on? Thanks

I'm pretty sure you could just swap xr650l bearings and spacer into your xl600r front wheel to use the xl600r wheel on the 17mm axle

Possibly. But I wanted the taller and thicker forks as well

Oh I see what you're saying. Yeah but I also wanted the larger front disk. Which maybe that could swap over as well

did you use the stem from the xr or the xl for the forks?

are you referring to the triple trees? Yes you have to use the XR ones and modify the upper one to fit xl gauges on. thanks for watching and give it a thumbs up if it helped you out

Not the triples themselves, I'm referring to the stem that goes through the head where the bearings are. Did the xr650l stem work with the xl600's front frame head or did you need to swap the xl600 stem into the bottom xr triple clamp?

the XR650L triple clamp bolt right up to the XL frame. The only thing you have to do is modify the steering stops a little and the steering lock stop

kzguy2 thanks man, I've been meaning to do a front swap on my 83 and haven't been able to get an experienced answer about the need to swap stems between the xl/xr.
