Problem with that is the money you’re willing to spend, $100 for the mic + $100 for the audio interface + other stuff you’re willing to add to the chain will turn very expensive fast, while the $150 usb mic will cost only that and give a very good sound quality, and the XLR is also hard to configure. Also, the USB in this test turns out weird mid video for some reason, probably the Operating System changed the mic volume or applied some voice effect while he was recording, the same could happen in the XLR version and you’d spend a lot of time troubleshooting as there would be many links in the chain. And to add, they are the same mic from the same brand but their electronics are very different, the USB has a built in converter/power transformer while the XLR needs outside phantom power. There’s also the portability, as someone who might move the mic alot, carrying a boom arm, mic, cables and audio interface(XLR) would take more space than carrying only the mic, cables and boom arm(USB), provided that you’ll put it in an boom arm as they come with a support that you can attach and let the mic on the table (at least I’m sure the USB one does). So even if it’s the same mic from the same brand, their purposes are very different, while one does a very good job in home recording and costs more money(XLR), the other is excellent for the person that uses the computer or notebook to talk to friends or speak in online meetings and needs to move the computer around frequently and put all the stuff in a backpack at the same time(USB). But if audio quality is what you need and money is no problem, and you’re willing to learn all the music related stuff, the XLR would be the clear winner.

Its not voice quality you hear. Its added saturation by mic preamp.

What problem do you all have with deeper voice ? 😁😁😁😁 Stop believing it has to be a standard or only big deep voices are nice and sexy... Everybody is making choices of mics...just based on that. The equipment you use to record must faithfully reproduce your intonations, especially for voice-overs, you actually have more freedom for videos etc. When I'm working on my intonations for a script, I don't want my microphone or anything else to change my voice! If afterwards I want to make adjustments, it's the post-production work and in particular the EQ. But if you really care about it, install voice meter banana which is a virtual audio interface, and you would be able to adjust the tone of your voice, reduce the echo and even use a 15-band EQ!!

Hopefully you found an AT3035, they did away with the 3000 series as the AT3035 is now the AT2035. Unfortunately, substituted quality parts with those of lesser quality. Both the AT3035 (silver chassis/ body) and AT2035 perform the same but the 3035 has a higher degree of quality electronic parts. Note: the 2035 is XLR and not USB.

I've got a Rode NT-USB, great mic That said, I've got a 2020 xlr, Pro Blue Yeti ( xlr / usb ) and a Shure MV51. All great mics. The MV 51 actually surprised me! And it's look is so classic!

It really all depends on what mic suits your voice (or the source you want to capture), not the price point, make or model.

I would do exactly the opposite ! It's exactly like a gamer who builds his desktop and puts all his money into the graphics card. If the motherboard and the power supply are not powerful enough to support the card, then it will be restricted and the player will finally say that this card is not that good and that he is very disappointed when the problem is elsewhere. Here are just a few considerations to take into account: - If you opt for XLR, you need a microphone, audio interface and XLR cable that are consistent. If you buy a poor quality cable, the sound will not be good. Worse, after 30 minutes of use, it will start to create distortions in the voice. If you're buying a $600 mic and a $150 audio interface, like the gamer with his graphics card, you're going to be disappointed with the mic. Some say the micro USB generates noise...some audio interfaces do too. - For USB microphones, the technology evolves quickly with the finesse of circuit engraving. It is therefore always necessary to turn to recent microphones (and therefore not the blue yeti which is 10 years old) such as the SE Electronics Neom. - If you take an XLR microphone around 150€, an average XLR cable and an audio interface also in this price range such as the Behringer UMC 22, the Steinberg C12 or the Scarlett 2i2 (which is not better but cost twice the price! The good scarlett products start with the 4i4 audio interface), you will have little difference with a good USB, especially if you are familiar with your DAW and VST plugins. This heavily depends on the price point. You can get a decent entry level USB mic for a fraction of what an audio interface will cost you but once you hit a price point where audio interfaces become adfordable, USB mics start to fall off.

I think depending on what type of mic you use that *may* be possible? I know that dynamic mics need less voltage to work than a condenser mic, which needs to run through an interface with phantom power (im just going off memory from other videos ive watched, so yeah). Whether or not it can work in a 3.5mm jack, im not sure. I think USB mics have certain converters installed in it for it to work in recording and I think thats what the interface is for. Don't take my word on it completely, I'm still a noob at this. Also a headphone jack wouldn't cut it, it would need a mic jack, though thats prolly what you meant.

Is this question still relevant? Do you wanr a condeser or dynamic mic and for what purpose with what expectations? And how high is the budget? Also, in 99% of cases, recording through an audio interface makes a lot more sense than using USB. Especially if it's a good one like an ID4.

The at2020 usb+ should pick up the voice and the sound of the instrument, if you need to hear the sound of your voice, it has a headphone output (unsure if it also output the sound of the computer though) that you can plug your headphones and hear without delay, or you can go into the windows audio configuration and find the option in the recording devices to hear what’s being feed to the mic (but that’s going to add delay and the instrument sound would be doubled). You can only use one mic to record, it’s impossible to use one usb mic and one 3.5mm(P2) headset mic, even if you opt out for the XLR version you’d need two mics (one for voice and one for instrument) and an audio interface with at least two XLR inputs (provided that your instrument does not have a 6.3mm(P10) output jack), or one XLR mic and an audio interface with one XLR port and one P10 input if your instrument does have a P10 output. But anyway, you should point your instrument and sing to the same mic, that way you’ll be able to capture both sounds without expending lots of money, but at the same time if you’re planning to work with audio, the extra cash spent on XLR audio interface and the XLR mic would make more sense as you’d be able to record in a different track than your voice and treat them with different sets of effects in your music editing software. In many DAWs and applications, from our experience a computer will not recognize them as separate devices. If you absolutely do want to use 2 USB microphones at the same time, for the utmost in stability and a guarantee it will work, you'd have to use One computer per mic.

You must use something like this The Shure X2u XLR-to-USB Microphone Adapter is a modular accessory that connects any XLR microphone to your computer cost about $99 though. or using Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface (Gen 3) for $119. Just too much stuff to lug around with a laptop. Just get AT2020 straight forward that has USB connector or the Blue Yeti. The Elgato Wave 3 is compact however not solidly built and the specs not as good.

@@alyssascott9754 I have the blue yeti with otg, and also have a dynamic/Scarlett solo. But both of them sound amplified even on 0 gain when connected to my S20+ using star maker app to sing, if I record outside the app it sounds fine. Could this be a software or hardware issue. Because when trying on my LG v30 it sounds leveled but not nearly as clear as the voice should be. I'm confused and feel disappointed that I'm spending so much with no results.

Hi Cat, great question! From my experience with mics like the Shure MV7 that have both a USB and a XLR connection is that there is not a very noticeable amount of latency using USB for every day use like zoom calls, simple voice over or sound recording. But for as low as latency as possible using the XLR connection with an interface will be your best bet.

You don't need phantom power on USB mics ever

Hey Sergio, if your mic only has a USB output it is purely a USB mic and does not need an interface, but if you have a mic with both XLR and usb like the Shure MV7, you can use it with your Focusrite interface. Hope this answers your question!

A Sound card is an audio interface and is required for the XLR Microphone. The USB microphone does not require one you can just plug directly into your computer! :)

You definitely can. Your friend would just have to sync the two tracks but that shouldn’t be difficult as long as you both start recording at the same time (for a conversational podcast). Does that make sense?
