Hi folks! Mike here! I've seen a passionate response in the comments (it's great that you are so invested, obviously!) and I just wanted to say, it's all cool! I was unlucky to draw Baldur's Gate 3 against Andy, who has played it more than anyone on the team, and I think he'd have beaten me regardless. Plus, his rogue-like behaviour was nothing if not entirely in character as Corazon. There's a long way to go in the tournament yet and plenty of challenges left for me to earn some points. - Mike

Bit disappointing as to what could have been a more enjoyable challenge to watch, Though it is a challenge amongst friends so I see that side of things as well.(Dont think Corazon has cast Magic Missle in a session before? While Andy did press his advantage, ultimately, I don't think it really affected the final result much, if any. Short of Andy throwing, I don't think there is much that could have done to alter the outcome. It's just the luck of the draw and could have just as easily been a racing game or other challenge Andy isn't so good at.

It wouldn’t have helped, since rogues get an extra dash as a cunning action. Mike would have to keep using his action to dash rather than attack, but Andy could both dash and attack.

I had the same thought. It would allow Mike to get into melee range, but not make an attack that turn. Next turn, Andy could cunning action disengage to get away, but Mike's movement would have allowed him to reach. If instead Andy accepted the attack of opportunity (if that even works in pvp?) and used cunning action dash, he would have gained back the lost distance and still be able to attack on his turn.

I feel kinda bad for Luke. Andy was obviously not doing that turn-based by continuing to move as Mike was trying to figure things out, and Luke looked like he knew it should be called out but also either didn't want to confront Andy about it, or thought it should stay that way for 'entertainment purposes'. Then Andy rode Luke about not helping out Mike. Mike's a happy-go-lucky sort and let it slide in the end, but this Xmas Challenge feels iffy AF. My SO and I always comment on these that part of what makes them so good is that the others are always cheering along and offering advice even if doing so hurts them. This was such a "f you, I'm winning this" that it's not fun to watch. I was fine with the first of Andy's moves because starting a duel right besides each other is odd, so go ahead and put in the space that probably should have been there from the start. But the second move? And the third? Nah, that's just cheating. In the end, Andy almost certainly would have won anyway with a rogue against Mike, not the least because Mike doesn't play the game. Which in part makes it ok because the outcome wouldn't change. But also makes it worse, because it's a pointless cheat that only makes it more fun for Andy and no one else.

Considering Luke had forgotten to separate them before starting the combat, I don't see Andy making space before they began the fight to be 'cheating'. @tyrannicpuppy
@tyrannicpuppy 5 ай бұрын
@@GriffinWolf They were plenty separated already with Corazon out on the cliffside while Egbert remained in the arena that was obviously intended to be their battlefield. Corazon then running even further away while it was not his turn was a blatant violation of the turn based rules. A rule he continued to violate for the entire challenge. Being unfortunately close to an enemy attacker when combat starts is part of the random fun of Initiative Order. Corazon has bonuses to help mitigate that and he still rolled lower than Mike. That's just the luck of the dice. He shouldn't go lower in the initiative order but also get a surprise round to prepare and run away because he's squishier than Egbert. That is again the luck of the draw. It could have been any combination of characters. It's Andy's poor luck to roll/draw low on both counts, but that is how chance works. Being dealt a bad hand is not a valid excuse for cheating. Mike had an idea of his options, but thanks to Luke's nerfing half his abilities with how he leveled him, breaking his oath and not providing his usual loadout, his only real option was melee, which Andy cheated him out of using. He didn't have any of Egbert's normal ranged abilities or weapons. While Andy was allowed to outfit Corazon quite differently to his Oxventure build, but which absolutely favoured his cheating style. It's wrong that Mike can win all the random portions and still be intentionally disavantaged by his opponent and the judge just ignoring the cheating behaviour.

Have to agree with the majority of the comments here, this was far from an earned win. It's one thing to do these challenges with an experience advantage - personal interests are what they are - but to have a clear advantage and resort to obvious cheating that clearly falls out of the set rules for the challenge is just wrong. Shame on Andy and kinda shame on Luke for allowing the challenge to keep going after he saw what Andy did. Give the point to Mike in the name of disqualification.

Oh my, Andy truly hit a nerve here. Maybe I'm not upset because I don't play the game and in the end it is a no-stakes, funny little challenge. From a role playing perspective, Andy acted very true to character ;)

It's not even about the game, it's the principle. Doing things that are explicitly not allowed, and exploiting the other person's confusion with the interface and basic controls, is not a good look. Especially for a no-stakes, funny little challenge. This channel is usually good-hearted, and this felt a bit cruel.

Only if he got lucky with a crit and lucky with damage rolls. Definitely not a smart move to heal there, but it probably wouldn't have won him the challenge. But if he wasn't made an oathbreaker, he could've healed for 2 turns using a single bonus action and channel oath, if he had a crossbow he might have esnared Andy with the esnaring strike he actually tried to use.

Yeah, agreed. I'm getting to this first handful of Xmas challenges a bit late and, of the ones on the list, this was the one I was most excited to see because the BG3 PvP sounded like a fun and interesting idea. It was funny the first time Andy moved on Mike's turn but, when he didn't move back, the rest of the video kind of went into a downward spiral of frustration and disappointment in the knowledge that Andy wasn't going to stop cheating and this was just going to be an Andy-trolling-Mike video rather than the promised BG3 PvP. Based on Mike's pinned response at the top of the comments (where he's being an admirably good sport/co-worker/friend), doesn't sound like we'll be getting a do-over so I too am left feeling like I wish I could see how that would've gone if they'd actually played it for real.
@docette2015
@docette2015 5 ай бұрын
Honestly, what I'm getting from the comment section is that the challenge SHOULD have been "how much can you spin around in the game before you get sick." XD Seriously, though, good try Mike, and Andy, I know running away is Corazon's schtick and all, but you probably shouldn't have done it IMMEDIATELY. (Also, occurs to me that this would have been a LOT fairer if Luke had also given Egbert two explosives so he had his signature bombs -- he uses THOSE a lot more than his mace!)

Wild that Andy is being dog-piled on. People mad that he moved on Mikes turn: they all agreed not to do that so he stopped. Mike is a professional games reviewer and didn’t bother playing the game of the year before now. That’s on him. It’s not Luke’s job to play Mike’s turns more effectively because he can’t be bothered to learn DND.

I think this is the first one of these that wasn't really enjoyable to watch. I was disappointed that Luke didn't set any real ground rules for the start, mainly like when they had started and how far apart they should be. I was disappointed to see Mike constantly asking "what can I do" when he plays a D&D Paladin and should at least have some idea other than "hit with mace" by now. But I was also disappointed that Andy kept stopping Luke from helping. I don't disagree that Luke shouldn't be telling Mike what he should do, but it's like Luke wasn't even being allowed to let Mike know his movement and spell options since Mike seemed to be wholly unaware of them. This felt similar to watching a fighting game between someone who has mastered a character moveset vs someone who is playing for the first time and only knows the kick and punch buttons.

Considering the tradition in all previous years for the other players to actively give tips to whomever is playing, it does leave a bad taste when the guy that is an expert in the game effectively tells the neutral party to shut up when they’re trying to do that for the guy who really doesn’t have a clue…..
