@@erzsieke As a math nerd, i shall explain, BODMAS, or BEDMAS is the sequence you should do the operations in. so first is the brackets. which is 2+2 = 4, then before multiplication comes division so, 8 divided by 2 = 4. so its 4x4 = 16. (I am literally in 7th grade I don't understand what else method you would do- )

@@chaitragutta8780 I’m older than you (not by TOO much) and I guess I was taught a different method. I was taught to use algebraic methods. First you add inside the parenthesis. Next you multiply the 2 outside the parenthesis because it is multiplying the numbers within the parenthesis (idk if that made sense when I try to explain it lol). Which leaves you with 8/8 which is 1. That is how I got my answer. Which is presumably how Gia got her answer too. I guess it really depends on your country and school system.

Loved it but I want to say something about the math problem. So you do brackets first of course. 8/2(2+2)=8/2X2 But you always always always work from left to right after that. I don’t care that it’s multiplying the bracket, it is not the bracket itself. Therefore, 8/2(2+2) =>8/2X4 =>4x4 =>16 Sorry Gia and everyone else who thinks I’m wrong but this is the way to do it.

@Jadyn Burton i learned pemdas too, but the P stands for *PARENTHESES*, so you would still do 2+2 first because it's in parentheses and then 8÷2, then finally 4×4, giving us 16, 1 is objectively wrong not just because it doesn't adhere to pemdas, but also because multiplication and division are done in the same step *FROM LEFT TO RIGHT* making 8÷2 come before 4 regardless

Answer to the math problem is 1. Technically multiplication and division are considered to have the same weight, but Multiplication comes first. BEMDAS (or PEMDAS), not BEDMAS. If the creator of the equation wants the division to be solved before the multiplication, they will use brackets to indicate this, so (8 / 2) * (2 + 2) would be 16. but 8 / 2(2 + 2) is 1

I asked CHATGPT and here's the ans- To solve the expression 8/2(2+2), we follow the order of operations, which is commonly remembered using the acronym PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division from left to right, and Addition and Subtraction from left to right). However, there can be ambiguity in this expression due to the placement of the parentheses. Some people interpret it as (8/2)(2+2), while others interpret it as 8/(2(2+2)). Let's solve it using both interpretations: If we interpret the expression as (8/2)(2+2): First, we simplify the parentheses: 2+2 = 4. Then, we perform the division: 8/2 = 4. Finally, we multiply: 4 * 4 = 16. Therefore, the result is 16 if we interpret the expression as (8/2)(2+2). If we interpret the expression as 8/(2(2+2)): Again, we simplify the parentheses: 2+2 = 4. Then, we perform the multiplication: 2 * 4 = 8. Finally, we perform the division: 8/8 = 1. Therefore, the result is 1 if we interpret the expression as 8/(2(2+2)). Please note that the lack of clarity in the original expression can lead to different interpretations and results. To avoid confusion, it is best to use clearer notation or include additional parentheses to indicate the intended grouping

no, sorry, it is 1. Multiplication and division only technically have the same weight, but multiplication is still handled first, and so is addition. It is considered courteous to use brackets when there is ambiguity in an equation, but when brackets are not present, multiplication is always handled before division, and addition always before subtraction. The equation could be writen as y = a / b(c + c). When solving for y, the equation condenses to a / (bc + bc). In the case of this equation, we happen to know the values for a, b and c, so its just plug in and go.

@@spamfilter32 only in the acronym, but when learning order of operations, you learn that multiplication and division are done in order of left to right along with addition and subtraction going in order from left to right, meaning either one can come first in those pairs. that's why both the acronyms PEMDAS and BEDMAS work because either mult. or div. can come first depending on the order from left to right.

The correct answer is 1. Love Anna's confusion though. 2(2+2) is taken as 2x(2+2) so you solve that first before moving on to the first part. Easier to take it as: 8/[2(2+2)] =8/[2(4)] =8/8 =1
@rubyerben9562

But the parentheses are only around the 2+2 part so after you solve that you just have 8/2(4), and according to the order of operations division and multiplication are essentially on the same level you just solve left to right. So it's 16 (you'll also get 16 if you type it into a calculator).

in math with multiple components there is an order of operations, where each part (+, *, / etc) is an operation. Normally we perform all operations left to right, but some operations have greater importance then others, so parenthesis (or brackets) are always done first. Then exponents (square, cube etc.). Then Multiplication, then Division, then Addition, and finally Subtraction. So for the equation a + b + c you will just go from left to right, and for a + b - c you will also go from left to right, but in the case of a - b + c you will add b + c first, then subtract that from a. So in the above equation y = a / b(c + c) the parenthesis is done 1st, then you multiply b by the quantity c + c, then you divide a by that amount. or y = 8 / 2*2, which becomes y = 8 / 8 which equals 1.
