Yes, it's like those little crates they keep pigs in where they don't even have room to turn around. They do need to be kept in large pens together at night, and out in the fields grazing during the day. Unless, like you said, if sick or for ewes who are lambing and bonding with their newborn lambs

it is to monitor an ewe that is lambing and ensure that lambs are suckling, it also easy to spot ewes that are not producing milk. they do not stay there for ever its just for lambing then they will be free to graze in the field

They stay in the pens for about 21 days after lambing. Its just to make sure all of the lambs survive their early days and get enough milk and attention from their ewes. After that they go out to the open field again.

I have upon occasion lived in MY 4x4, but it was by choice, whilst exploring Africa - and if I may say so myself, it was an amazing adventure - perhaps you should also try it? (Are you confused right now? - don't worry - وَعَلَيْكُمُ اَلسَّلَامُ‎)

They are only in the pens for lambing....and will go out to pasture afterward. This is standard practice to ensure the lambs are born healthy, the mother accepts them and that any lambing problems can be spotted and dealt with immediately. Sheep are never single penned in South Africa as a rule. Firstly it is hugely uneconomic to do so....secondly it is a pain in the ass to feed animals individually. This is much more for the benefit of the sheep than to the benefit of the farmer...They will generally just be in those pens for a brief period. Hope this helps you understand that no cruelty is involved here.

No they are not!! Only while they are lambing they get looked after and go back out to the open field 21 days later.
