In today’s video I explain how the Landcruiser VDJ200 series intercooler setup works, how to remove it and how to clean it out to maximise efficiency and performance. This easy and quick maintain tip is essential for those who own modern day turbo diesel vehicles.
I show how the air travels through the intake system of the Landcruiser V8 twin turbo diesel and why we need an intercooler mounted in our engine bay to increase performance.
I provide step by step instructions to remove your intercooler and the associated wiring and vacuum hoses safely and without damage.
We then put the intercooler through a thorough chemical degrease and clean to ensure all oil residue is removed, providing us with a clean and efficient intercooler that will lower intake temperatures and increase performance.
At the end of today’s video I test the vehicle using OBDII software and factory charged air intake temperature gauges to test against a base line reading to see exactly how much of a difference an intercooler clean actually makes to your 4WD turbo diesel.
The vehicle I was working on today is a 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series Sahara. Engine - 4.5L V8 Twin turbo diesel.

To be clear, oil in a diesel's intake has ZERO effect on performance and can actually help prevent valve recession. It's the carbon/ soot from the EGR when mixed with oil residue from blow by that causes the issue :) HOWEVER : If you have detected even a small amount of dusting ( Refer Nathan's other vid's ) cleaning out your intercooler internally and externally as per vid is recommended as it will also reduce the amount of grit already in your intake which will eventually end up in your engine. I have seen VDJ200 Intercoolers almost completely blocked externally from bugs etc and therefore spiking air intake temps.

Great video, with the software you had going is there any sensors for the fuel consumption? That would definitely cement the results further.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate. Between the software and the Ultra-gauge I would have access to the fuel consumption information, however I would have a guess that the test sample size would have to be very large to accurately capture any benefit. As I'm sure cleaner the intercooler would provide fuel benefits, I believe it would be minor and there would be so many other factors (environmental and vehicle) that could/would effect the results, making it very hard to determine if the clean was the reason for the change. I'll definitely try to include as much data in my future video's as possible. Cheers, Nathan.

I've just recently done my intake and throttle body and compared commercial EGR cleaners with a 75/25 mix of kerosene/white spirit. I found both to be equally efficient at dissolving EGR/PCV muck. From your go here it looks like kerosene was the most efficient. Maybe the optimal process would be a good soak in of kerosene with some agitation in the form of air bubbling or blasting followed up with a spirit rinse and air blasting for complete drainage.

Cool mate, but I would just use the kerosene. That pink stuff u mixed with the water does bugger all (I have used the same stuff) and metholated spirits is pretty useless at removing diesel oil too. Also that pink stuff is caustic so if you don't get every drop of it out of the intercooler it has a chemical reaction with the aluminum which quickly corrodes & it will actually start blocking the cores withing an hour. I have been down that road too.. Another good thing about metholated spirits is that it will mix with water (or in this case absorb the water). Some people use it if they get water in their Gasoline because it absorbs the water droplets and then it mixes (without bubbles) with the fuel. Then the water and metolated spirits burns cleanly with the fuel.But it makes the fuel a weaker octane though.In this instance it does help remove the Kerosene quite well.

Thanks mate. There definitely is a small improvement there, small but noticeable. Anything we can do help the vehicle run a little cooler and more efficiently is definitely a win in my books. Great video Nathan. Very informative. Just pulled the ic off my vdj79 for a look. Oily residue but not bad. Will do a clear per your video. Question. Would you use ct14 again? Or just kerosene and metho. Also, curious why you did a water wash when metho being hygroscopic would have absorbed the water, then evaporated off. Finally, did you need to remove the sensor connections off the back before cleaning.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. So if I was doing this again, I would only use Kerosene. This was by far the most effective method on the day. So the reason I used water to flush out at the end was for two reason. After using the CT-14 there was a heap of soap suds remaining in the intercooler. Again, when I do it again, I wouldn't use CT-14, so this wouldn't be an issue. Further, I wanted to make sure there was no contaminants remaining within the intercooler. I didn't find this was too effective, so if I only used Kerosene, I probably wouldn't bother with the flush. And, no, I didn't remove the sensors from the intercooler unit itself. Everything is still functioning properly months after the clean. Cheers, Nathan.

@@XploringOz I am looking at replacing the intercooler for either HPD or CrossCountry Ultimate. I have a problem with high egts when towing. Probably to do with having my DPchip wound up too far. Anyway, I note both these I/C's have bottom mount Fans which pull air through from top down. the alternative is top mounting the Fans as Berrima Diesel have done. I see some efficiency issues with top mounting as the fans and mountings may disrupt air flow. Obviously not the case with bottom mounting the fans. I note that Berrima Diesel run the fans full time, perhaps for that reason. sorry to hijack the thread. Just thought it may be relevant to your investigations with fans.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
@@haitch1980 I would guess that replacing the intercooler with a much larger unit, like one that you have mentioned would definitely have a much greater effect on turbo air temps then just adding fans. I agree with the placement of the fans and this is what I am going to test out in this video. Because I will be trying to mount to fans on a budget, upgrading or replacing the intercooler is not an option. Leaving the factory intercooler where it is means that you are not able to mount the fans underneath, they're just simply isn't enough room. I will be trying to compare the differences between the factory intercooler and factory intercooler with top mounted fans in various conditions, including high speed driving to see whether they are effective for all styles of driving. Oh, yes, for definate. Anything you mount in front of the IC will cause an "air shadow" on the IC. Large spot lights would be particularly troublesome and I would expect any OE to reject any warranty claim as a result. Lighting wise, bulbs are so 20th century!! Instead of large lights with halogen bulbs, consider getting some LED projectors and mount them in the bumper or the fog light positions. OR maybe a light bar mounted in front of the bumper. Basically, smaller lights and not in front of the IC.

Hey mate, so yes. The TechStream software has been a great feature and advantage to see some data from my LC200, however it wasn't an easy process to install. I purchased the mini VCI cable on eBay, however downloaded my software from an online public forum (can't remember exactly which site). Installing the software was a nightmare. I tried for hours and couldn't get it to work. This is because it requires a unique code from Toyota (which customers don't have access to) and this needs to be bypassed. I ended up sending my laptop to a family member in the IT business who managed to install some software that bypass' the need to enter the codes. I with I could provide more info, but I just don't know (not the most IT savvy). I am definitely glad I have the software though. Able to see and diagnose fault codes, change settings (volume of lock/unlock beeps & remote window opening function etc.). It also has the ability to check all sorts of figures of the engine and supporting parts. Definitely recommend if you are able to get it working. Cheers.

Put dual fans (kit from PWR) on, run to a manual switch. Using an auto meter dual air temp to measure effects pre and post cooler (even before install). Gauge also triggers fans at a set alarm point if I’m not paying attention. Immeasurable negative effects at highway speeds with fans off. But... I've done the same on my cruiser, before I saw your vid: you're doing it wrong, sorry. The FIRST liquid you pour into it is lacquer thinners, not your water-based degreaser - because then the surface is water-coated hence will block the surface for access for any other non water-based liquid/hydrocarbons... like thinners is, similar like your kerosene. Thinners however is more aggressive than kerosene (or turpentine or diesel) hence will clean best! Nice job and nice results demonstrating the benefit. On a normal saloon car I suggest cleaning the IC every 50,000 miles. More often if it's a diesel engine (40 or even 30 000 miles). You might be interested to learn where this oily residue comes from. It's a result of blowby gasses and oil mist being recycled through the PCV system to be burned. You can virtually eliminate this oil by using a good catch can (which must be properly installed, most DIY jobs I've seen are not). If you use a cheap catch can use two in series. Now that you have seen the oil residue in the IC, have you considered the turbo compressor and the throttle body? I've got a playlist with some info in. Interesting results! It sure does show an improvement. However, taking the 44°C vs. 40°C results, it's not a 10% decrease. That's because 0°C is not "zero" -- negative 273°C is. This is because -273°C is 0°K (Kelvin), which is absolute zero. Thus, the real percentage decrease is between 317°K and and 313°K, thus 4°K/317°K = 1.3%. That's clearly not true, as even you know, temperatures get colder than 0°C across many places on earth.
