The number of symbols on the long and short sides of the cards indicate what the card can possibly be. It adds an aspect of excitement to the game for the player. Casinos discard the decks regardless of whether the players bend the cards or not so it's just another way for players, who are spending way more money than the decks cost, to get more out of the game.
