TW4XP - Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE

This innovative side- by-side two seat city car eschews a steering wheel for outstanding visibility and ease of entry/exit instead by using two control sticks and buttons to control the speed and direction of the car. A lightweight aluminum chassis and all-electric drive using high torque motor operating a wheel speed (no transmission or gear reduction needed) with integral differential weighed in at just 1545 pounds. This car uses an 800V lithium-ion manganese battery pack and an inverter adapted from a wind turbine power generator. This unusually high vehicle voltage level reduces electrical losses and increases overall vehicle efficiency while using standard electric components. Employing a technique just now being considered by OEMs, this team charges their batteries through their motor and controller.

It's got only one wheel at the front but the low profile makes cornering easier. But with 2 wheels at the back, it can carry more payload.

This is the evolution of the velomobile. Score one point for fully faired recumbent trikes! The human speed record is on a fully faired recumbent bike. It went 83 mph on half a horse power of human pedaling alone. Just imagine the possibilities if you include ultra lightweight motor, batteries and solar panels.

Unfortunately we have taken the road of huge heavy cars and trucks . I would love a small car, but then you look at those huge SUVs and trucks on the road. I would love to see rapid transit , key word rapid and high speed rails . That combined with small cars like this and bicycle friendly cities. Doubt in my life time , if ever. We pollute like crazy . Tesla cars pollute just as much when you factor in manufacturing the car, factories, mining the minerals for batteries, the electricity needed ,.... Its mind boggling

Key words: three quarter of a million. Quarter of a million per participant. Nice figures. Funny thing is... Have these guys tested their creation for collision at 64 km/h? Seat belt and SRS cooperation? It is extremely simple to create fuel efficient car. You need to make that fuel efficient car safe. And reliable. Where it is now?

It would be better with a steering wheel. I tried "lever" steering in the 1970`s and it sucked. Not enough control.

lansingman2002 nah mate. 3ton hummer vees and other cars that cant avoid accidents are why insurance keeps going up. less is more. newtons law.

Three quarters of a million euros?? Its not even gold plated! For one hundred thousand I could have put this thing together. Its not a new concept there have been many cars like it before and there design is not really that aerodynamic it has no rear wheel skirts and its not airfoil shaped. Somebody is walking around with 500 thousand euros in their pocket!

Schien ein hoffnungsvolles Projekt - so leicht und geringer Windwiderstand das am Akku gespart werden kann - ich hatte vor den TW4XP zu kaufen- weil er auch gut aus sieht und man sich damit nicht lächerlich macht. Es wurde nie durchgezogen aber für Investorengelder geworben. Ich bin froh das ich nicht investiert habe.
