Thanks for uploading this video, it's the best I've seen anywhere. Nice that the driver goes over all the controls with us complete with his Aussie humour. Interesting how in the XPT cab the traction motors are the predominant noise with the Diesel engine fairly quiet - it sounds like a straight electric loco. The more I see of Australia and the straight talking friendly people, the more I'd like to visit some day.

It's a Diesel-Electric. Engine is a VP185. Same one used by the British Class 43 HST. The XPT version is downrated slightly.

@KuraIthys I don't mind... It's in a playlist of 14 videos, half of which are in the original KZfaq/ SD format. I re-edited the first few, as far as Bathurst, to slightly higher standard, haven't got round to the rest. The entire cab-ride was Lithgow to Orange, plus footage from the carriage either end.

Regarding traction motor noise the loco was probably not on full load so the traction motors were predominant. On full load it may be different. Certainly this is the case for Class 205 Thumpers - only on part load can the traction motors be heard over the Diesel engine in the power car accomodation.

Wow. This is amazing. I've been tossing around the idea of simulating the sydney-dubbo XPT in Railworks, but I've been having a hard time working out how to get suitable reference material. (I'm in the UK at the moment) - for UK routes, I can check things myself, not to mention cab ride videos of many routes are commercially available... Do you mind if I make use if this to try and put a simulation together? How much of the route do you have footage of?

kingsbishop Lithgow is 950 metres, so I assume Marrangaroo is about the same.

It's so pathetic. Another example of how politicians put profit and budgets before the national interest. Take track maintenance off the rail department and give it to private enterprise. Just bullshit. They were never serious about the XPT "revolutionizing" country rail services as the primitive track alignment and crap maintenance has never allowed these trains to reach their full potential. The British HSTs on which these XPTs were modeled belt along at far greater speeds. I was over there in 98 and saw an HST climbing the grade into Box Tunnel, it was a passing flash with two turbos screaming at full cry!

That cab is an absolute wreck. They’ve taken our superb British designed HST and totally ruined it.

They've hardly ruined it. In many ways, they've improved it. It looks more modern and the position of the switches on the left hand side is far superior to the HST's split level arrangement. The HST cab is rather austere; this cab looks much more comfortable, with carpeting, more legroom and better seating. Granted, better seats are a necessity on such poor track.
