1979 XS750 YAMAHA 3 CYLINDER CAFE RACER.
My objective when I decided to build a Yamaha XS750 Triple Café Racer was to make it look like it came from the factory after I was done, and basically..... improve on the looks, cornering, braking and keep it ride able and reliable.
The build started out with a Photoshop Concept and a CAD drawing, that way I new what the desired finished product should look like.
The engine was left pretty much stock except for the velocity stacks and the exhaust system. Reliability and driveability was the main objective.
A 3 into one header with an Emgo universal megaphone muffler. I don't know who the manufacturer of the exhaust pipes was, but they are 1 3/8" primaries with a 2 inch 3 into one collector. I added the megaphone muffler. This exhaust combination produces lots of low end torque and is great for around town riding.
The XS750 Yamaha gas tank was lengthened 3 1/2" and painted with a Duplicolor Paintshop Sublime Green, Topped of with a 2K clear.
The gas tank and tail section graphics mimic the OEM XS750 Yamaha graphics from the period.
The stock seat tail section was utilized to maintain the 1979 XS750 Yamaha OEM look.
A LED taillight, brake light and license plate light were integrated into the tail section to give the rear end a clean uncluttered look.
Stock seat pan was shortened and narrowed and a custom seat cover was sewn on my 1958 model Singer sewing machine.
There is an an inner rear fender (to keep road dirt and rain off the engine), and a compartment behind the side covers for a full tool kit so I can do emergency roadside repairs if necessary.
I used a Ballistic Lithium Iron battery because of its small size, light weight and great cranking power and located it under the seat tail section.
A custom made wiring harness powers all the electrics.
A KOSO DB-02R digital speedo and tach unit was molded into the OEM XS750 Yamaha headlight bucket .
VFR750 HONDA 41mm front forks and triples.
VFR750 Front brake calipers.
Honda SF400 front rotors.
XS400 YAMAHA 18" front wheel.
Front fender is off a Honda CM250.
Rear brake utilizes a Yamaha R6 rotor, caliper, caliper bracket, master cylinder, and a modified XS750 caliper stay.
Avon AM26 Roadrider tires.
The original XS750 Yamaha Rear sub frame was removed and replaced with a custom fabricated sub frame so as to raise the seat height and create a more open look under the seat and between the rear wheel and to accommodate the rear shocks which were leaned forward to 45 degrees.
Rear shocks are fully adjustable for rebound and compression.
One of the great features of the Yamaha XS750/850 is the shaft drive....no rear chain to adjust or chain lube to clean off the rear wheel.
Total wet weight was reduced from 530 lbs to 440 lbs, a weight savings of 90 lbs.
All fabrication, machining, painting and graphics were done by me in my 2 car garage, no outside professional services were utilized.
Custom made fiberglass side cover/number plates were designed and fabricated from scratch.
The number plate graphics are a tribute to my favourite Moto GP rider...9 time world champion Valentino Rossi.

nice! we had 3 of them in our family garage since the early eighties… we swapped them between us 3 brothers… took one with me to university in stuttgart. once I did a ride through the forests around city and took a break… 3 very old gentlemen in hiking gear stopped at the bike,discussing… and pointing at it.. I wondered and asked … turned out that they were retired porsche engineers and the motor and the transmission was once a project of them in the porsche engineering lab…“ ah we helped a bit these friendly japanese to improve the engine and drew the transmission. transmission was then produced at GETRAG near Stuttgart, put in wooden boxes and transported to japan. They do all the porsche transmissions since decades. the engine stood very near to some test samples of our 6 cylinder boxers in the workshop and we loved that it got some acoustic genes from the 911..“ then they hiked on with a smile…😉

My father bought a 1979 xs750 special when I was about 3 years old he strapped me to his stomach with his belt and as my mom shit a brick we did a 1-3 rip down the block and from then I’ve dreamt of owning his. He sold it (with massive regret later.) and I was indeed heartbroken and retired his later bike a vstar 1100. I plan on bringing an xs back into the family soon. This video brought a good sound and better memories to my night and restarted the passion.

just got one of these like 5 days ago. I didn't know these bikes were this cool! I was just guessin and really lookin for a KZ. I think this will work for me lol! My last bike was a Buell, and it was difficult to work on due to lack of space for hands, also had to use a laptop for tps resets. If the battery was a little low, it would let you ride for 37 miles or so then leave you stranded. I look forward to all analog and mechanical fixins

A bent needlenose pliers and a couple of circlips will sort THAT problem out. Take off the inspection plate, pull the bent-to-hell circlip off the end of the layshaft, replace with two of them. Or, rev it a bit higher, and double-shift from first to third. So much torque on these babies, second gear is kind of optional.

I had one of these back in the day. My limit of "tuning" was clip-on bars, fork bridge, Marzocchi rear suspension, rearset pegs and a 3 into 1 exhaust (Kerker IIRC)

Have you done the 896 conversation or is it still a 750 ? I have a 1983 xs750 se that I’m currently giving a good tidy up and I have to say that your bike is the best xs750 that I have ever seen. It’s got a great sound and a absolutely lovely colour scheme and when I see your bike it makes me wonder why Yamaha stopped making them or why they at the very least didn’t take the xs750’s and 850’s in the direction that you have because if they had the xs750’s & 850’s would have been more popular and further up the 70’s & 80’s bike ratings, maybe even at the top. I first posted 1 year ago on this video commenting what a great sound your bike makes and since then I always view this video quite regularly as I enjoy it very much indeed and I sometimes stream it to my T.V. To get the full benefit of the sound. You have great skills and produce Excellent workmanship and I am very impressed ! 🤓

Thanks for the kind comments. The bike in this video is still a 750, however I've sold this bike to make room for my current project, which is another XS750/850. My current project will be a 896cc. I've converted it to chain drive instead of the shaft drive, built a custom frame, aluminum gas tank, fitted modern 17" wheels and rubber and numerous other custom pieces. It should be an advancement on the bike in this video, we'll see I guess. I'm hoping to have my current project completed soon. Check out some of the progress on my facebook page facebook.com/XS750Yamaha/?ref=bookmarks

Very very nice bike with the perfect triple sound ! You're running open Mikuni carbs with a 3-1 exhaust and without any problems or lags through the whole rpm range !? How did you adjust the carbs and which jets did you use ? I'm planning of doing the same setup and have already a 3-1 exhaust but with performance issues around 5000-6000 rpm ...greetings from a '77 XS 750 driver from germany :)
@albaljeu4826
@albaljeu4826 7 жыл бұрын
Your '77 XS750 has different cams and carbs than my 79. The '78E and the '79F had the redline increased to 9000rpm, so I don't think you can use my settings as a baseline. Your 3 into 1 exhaust probably has different specs than my pipes also, my current set up uses 1 3/8" primary pipes which produce a good amount of torque in the lower rpm range, which allows for good performance around town. I had a system with 1 1/2" primaries on the bike which produced more horsepower in the upper rpm range and made the bike faster but not as nice around town. Also I dialed the carbs in about 2 years ago, so I don't remember what I did to jet the carbs. Each bike is different, and requires a little trial and error to get the jetting right. Good luck on yours and post a video when its done.
@piecemaker66
@piecemaker66 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response! The previous owner changend the carbs to the newer mikuni ones, but with the different cams you're right...that's too different. My exhaust is 1 3/8" at the header and increases to 2 3/8" after the collector with a modified jama / marshal exhaust. I'll try some carb settings the next weeks and I will definitely post a video when it's done :)

Hi could you tell me how you modified the xs400 front wheel to take dual discs. I assume spacers were required as well. Thanks Phil. Bike looks fantastic
@albaljeu4826
@albaljeu4826 2 жыл бұрын
The only mods I made to the wheel were, different size bearings to accommodate the VFR750 axle and yes, custom spacers. The XS400 wheel has provision already for dual disc.
