You're welcome. Honestly I don't even like the idea of a "shout out" because to me it implies that one channel is more successful than another, which we call "bigger" in KZfaq terms (and this is often deceptive, e.g. I don't ACTUALLY have 56K subs because most of those people aren't watching), but I could see you working so hard, with so few people watching, I thought it was worth a mention. Check out this man's channel!

In Portugal, we have an expression for what you did in most of this and the previous videos: "encher chouriços" (directly translates to "filling chouriços"). We use it whenever we have to wait for something or someone and, during that wait, carry out useless or unimportant activities.

What an excellent choice! I've been studying Spanish for a few years and I've also chosen to focus on Mexican Spanish. Not all of the apps/resources I use are Mexican, but that doesn't really matter that much as most of the native content I consume is... If I could only suggest a single book to get it would be the classic "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish". As for courses/apps, there are many good ones for Spanish in particular. I currently use Busuu as my main app.

@heartofthematterlanguage
@heartofthematterlanguage Жыл бұрын
In addition to Language Transfer and Dreaming Spanish, I recommend the Leer en Español series put out by Santillana. It is too difficult for most beginners (at least if they're English speakers), but you probably have enough language-learning experience to tackle it early. The easiest books (start with level 1, skip their earlier level which is made for the school market and not nearly as good) limit themselves to 400 different words and don't use much past tense or subjunctive, but other than that they're real Spanish, and are actual exciting stories that are quite enjoyable. There are something like 7 books at that first level, then just as many at the next (700 different words per book). They're Spanish rather than Mexican Spanish, but the differences aren't significant enough to spoil the value of these truly excellent readers.

A lot of people don't realise that Language Tranfser is a straight rip off of the Michel Thomas method. Is that OK? Hmm... it's REALLY freakin' similar. So I dunno... I tried it with German like 2 years ago and I got over it pretty quickly.
@trentasaurus

@@daysandwords I've heard that but I don't know exactly how similar they are cause I've never done Michel Thomas. I checked it out and it seems to be lower quality audio and paid so less accessible to everyone. Not saying it's okay to blatantly steal teaching material if that's what he did, but like I said it changed my life and gave me the confidence that I could learn a second language. You might have mentioned this already and I missed it, but do you mind me asking when the trip is, if it goes ahead? Roughly six months away, or a year for example? I’m curious to see the difference, if any, having a deadline will make to your approach.

It's just over 4 months away now (the flight to the USA, that is... presumably if I get to Mexico it'll be another 9 days afterwards, but I will be surrounded by 70 people during that time so there probably won't be much time for Spanish). My son is actually making a start on Japanese because they do it at the school he'll be going to next year (which is silly because how much Japanese are you gonna learn in 10 months of 2 classes a week when you're 12 years old...) but anyway. Also, he's been slowly picking up on Swedish since his brother was born. So Spanish is probably low on the priorities, especially since he may not even come with me if I do go to Mexico.

@@daysandwords Very cool. I imagine with a language like Spanish you can probably get to a fairly decent level in four months, so you’ll actually be able to get something, hopefully a lot!, out of the trip. Yeah, learning languages at school the way they teach is pointless, we know that now. And often detrimental, actually, as it can teach kids they don’t have a ‘talent’ for languages or that it’s too hard. But hopefully seeing you has given him different insight and he’ll find things he enjoys doing in Japanese rather than relying on school to teach him.

I absolutely promise to not do that. Sorry. 😟 This would be bad for my Spanish and even worse for my channel. People think more videos = good, but it doesn't when no one clicks on them. Who wants to see me stumble through terrible Spanish for 2 or 3 minutes? You'll see updates but they'll be when progress has actually been made.

Hahaha I remember saying it was Tijuana (the city I'm from) in Mexico just for the hell of it. I sort of got it. Well, hope you enjoy the street food over here. And as we say in Mexico, "Ayayay!"

Yeah... and I did know where Tijuana was (honestly I only found out two weeks ago though), but I said that I didn't to throw people off the scent. But also, they'd never hold a robotics competition there haha. The tournment is in Houston, so the hope is to fly down to Mexico City in the break.

It is my impression that the differences between Mexican Spanish and 'proper' Spanish were less than the differences between US English and British English, apart from the use of 'vosotros'. Americans have lots of vocabulary that are different to British words.

in Australia we get taught that it's both an island and a continent (or at least that's what I was told in primary school), even though that doesn't really make sense geographically

It keeps switching. We were raised being told it was both an island and a continent, and lately I've heard that some new definition of continent means it doesn't count or something... but the point is, everywhere is overseas.

Spanish will be a piece of cake now that you speak French. Honestly, just go all in for some months and you will be hugely rewarded. Spanish has amazing literature, music, and cinema, plus it is one of the most spoken languages in the world.

@metalsabatico

@@daysandwords As it should be. But even if you can't speak it and only studied it for a while, being in contact with it for a while helps so much. I think that if you actually studied for a while that will be a huge help and you will find that Spanish is just like French in many things. I was listening to a podcast on language learning not long ago and the interviewee mentioned how with similar languages is more about learning differences than actually learning new stuff if that makes sense (I thought it did). Anyways, Spanish has many things you can potentially fall in love with. Hopefully, you will go that route.

aaah, Now I feel like I missed huge opportunity. I google translated the Latin sentence at the end of the video saying "days of swedish and galician" and thought: galician is not on storylearning, only spanish, so maybe it is what spain was called during time when latin was actually spoken. I thought it was basically given out with that sentence, and that I am only gonna look like idiot point out something obvious. ( watched the video within first hour, there were barely any comments.)

Nah the end was just "Days of French n Swedish" but in Latin. It was in Latin because I was playing "divine" music from the renaissance that is in Latin, so it just felt fitting.
