This song fuels relief of emotions. Heavy emotions lifted after hearing this. I didn’t start feeling anything until the day after the attempt. Since I wasn’t majorly emotional the day of, it caught me off guard when emotions started spilling out of me. I sometimes forget how delayed my reactions can be about extremely stressful things. I got surprised by this song release, and it pulled the weight of my emotions off me. I used to believe that Democrats and Republicans mostly wanted the same things, and had different views on how to get there. That changed under Obama. It was the first time I ever heard a political leader refer to fellow Americans as enemies. There had been ugly names before, but none cut like enemies. It wouldn’t have been so bad, except for the fact that friends and family of people started treating people as such. I didn’t like Obama, but I never treated anyone different for supporting him. It’s been continually spiraling at a fast pace since. It’s not like Republicans just started being demonized when he came along. The cultural joke has always been that Republicans are evil. I have seen it from both sides, because I use to be a Democrat. Many of the things that are considered to be offensive were the same views as I had as a Democrat. I have always been patriotic, and loved God, my country, and the flag. I won’t be changing that for anyone.

It's not so much as 'right vs left', but right vs wrong, good vs evil. Tom is saying that in the verse 'shoot straight' means talking out the differences without being violent, to be honest and not play the 'I'm right you're wrong' game without actually listening and using proper discourse. Violence is never the answer to solving any disagreements. Except in situations where a person is violent and you have to respond in kind to defend yourself or others. There's many emotional responses going on both sides because of Trump almost assassinated. Many, including Tom are disgusted and angry that this occurred with some being disappointed that the kid failed. Which causes more angst against those who see violence as a quick resolution to their 'problem' which is hyped up by MSM using horrible and dishonest rhetoric because they make decisions based on their emotions, and not using any logic or common sense that wrong actions have consequences. Hence the term 'sheepalo' or 'sheeple' to describe them. They are considered as 'snowflakes' because when triggered, they act like toddlers throwing a hissyfit because they didn't get their way. If your emotions are not counterbalanced with logic, you're unhinged or another way of saying that you're unbalanced causing a person to react erratically.
