Y-axis turning: one tool for all turning operations

Get to know all-directional Y-axis turning. A 3-axis simultaneous turning method, where the tool rotates around its own centre. The insert is placed for machining in the Y-Z plane and the milling spindle axis interpolates during turning. As a result, a complex shape or a pocket can be machined with one single tool.
In this demo you see CoroTurn Prime and CoroPlex YT tools in action performing this exciting machining method.

when y-axis cutoff blades were introduced I figured it was only a matter of time before general turning went y-axis. Although I wasn't expecting the mill spindle to rotate!

Woah, just a few weeks ago I was wondering if anyone made a Y-axis tool that could rotate about its axis to maintain the lead angle. Very cool to see this in action.

Id buy ut for sure. I run WW2era machinea all day cuz Arbeit Macht Frei. But them old machines can be clattering and banging looking beat to shit and still holding 1 or 2 ten-thousandths as if theiy have been rebuilt every 3 months their entire lives. What im circuitously saying is the people who designed the stuff to make the stuff before comphter codes and robotic semi autonomous and now fully autonomous machines seriously knew theri shizzle. And calculated that accuracy with slide rules and whatnot. I thought trichoidial milling was cool, ima have to search the metal filings and chips for the truth of this newfangled fancy machine wrangling of 3 dimensional spatial relations. Not right this second though The brain is quickly approaching "uh hurrrrr derp de durrrr" energy, so were sleeping now. Well in a few seconds Yall understand Maybe Jeez i cant he coherent sometimes

Last week iv got a big box full of tool holders from sandvik 4x silenttool boring bar and alot of external turning tools also one multitoll for primeturning. @@nikolaiownz I should do a sphere (balljoint) and my salesguy told me CLX TC can’t do that because of the B-axis is only indexable, and pointed me against a CTX or NTX. But you are 100% correct. They only use the spindle axis of course. But the form tolerance might be questionable? Would be interesting to run the profile in a contracer and see results.

So what is the advantage to this over general turning other than to keep the cutting edge normal to the surface? Definitely easier to rotate about the spindle axis rather than a rotary axis to achieve that.
@sandvikcoromant
@sandvikcoromant Жыл бұрын
Advantages are many! First one is that you get stable machining and really good chip control. This as Y-axis means main cutting forces are directed into the machine spindle, which provides high process stability. By keeping a constant entering angle during machining, chips can be controlled in an optimal way. And a second thing is that all operations and complex shapes or pockets can be machined with one single tool, with the benefits of reduced tool change time and tool inventory (just to mention a few ) Please read more on our website if you want to know more ( www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-gb/tools/turning-tools/external-turning-tools/coroplex-yt )

I would imagine it's a pain in the **** to machine tight tolerances with this many direction changes and different tool angles. If there are more than 3 axis in a toolpath involved, machines start to get inaccurate at a certain point.

This method idea has been around for some time, our first patent in the area is actually 20 yrs old. (patents.google.com/patent/EP1415742B1/en?oq=EP1415742B1) Finally, now time is mature to bring great ideas to life with CAM support and machine capability available.

Interesting product with combination of some existing solutions. And of course very nice video of machining. But unfortunately programming rotate tools when do cutting is not easy. I hope that will be executed with integration in CAM programs as Mastercam or ToolPath.

Yes, programming can be a bit tricky. However there are CAM softwares that support this already today. GibbsCAM is one of them. We recommend to reach out to your local Sandvik Coromant representative if you have specific requests on programming.
