In this lesson, you will learn how to interpret the y-intercept of a function as the starting point, or initial value, of the function. This has important uses in physics and chemistry where mathematical functions represent phenomena in the everyday world, for example, perhaps a function represents the increase in temperature over time for an object. The y-intercept would then represent the initial value of the temperature when time is set equal to zero, or t=0, which could correspond to the start of observations or the start of an experiment.
