Also interesting that when she was in black and carried by those people she saw the burning field do you think that is her parent's house etc? @@TylerDurden404 not sure if the burning field is her parent's house. Interesting that you thought that, as I didn't see anything obvious that suggests that, but it's not impossible. She stole something from the emperor and it's likely that her family would've been punished as well. I suspect there's a lot of use of symbolism here to keep it family friendly. In the Chinese culture, black usually symbolises death. Although Taoist monks do dress in black as well. The fact that her raft was so small, floating in the water on her own without oars does seem like certain death eventually...

But based on context, it's likely the emperor's edict to take her in as a concubine, hence the shy look from her in the next shot, peeking from behind the door. It was shown before that, that she was on palace grounds hanging out with the princesses or royal concubines... Marriages used to be a arranged by families, and the maiden only waits behind the scenes. And in such cases of royal engagements, the families themselves have little say once the emperor takes liking of a maiden.
