For those that weren’t born yet or were too young to remember, I was 15 when this aired, and I can’t even describe how amazing and chill life was in this time period. The population was so good to each other, and everyone was just cool. Granted, it wasn’t perfect and there were still some a-holes here and there, but overall it was so nice. Everyone had money in their pockets. Things were so affordable. Gas was like $1.19/gallon. Then 9/11 happened and things started getting weird. More restrictions, and more of a tense atmosphere with big events, especially. But things were still pretty much good for the rest of the 2000’s, and then the financial depression of 2008 hit and things got bad. Social media started taking off around this time with MySpace and then Facebook. They were fun at first, especially MySpace. But we had no clue how much it would eventually divide us. We recovered around 2011-2012, but things were never the same. Around 2012, there was a huge negative energy shift…endless mass shootings. We also found out Google and social media was spying on us and sharing our data with everyone. That “safe” internet was not so safe anymore. That completely shattered our youth and image of these once fun and safe places. Then dating/hookup apps took off around 2013-2014….further dividing men and women, reducing people down to a quick snapshots of a pictures and nothing more. I hate to be negative, but just giving a realistic perspective. In retrospect, because things changed dramatically and never were the same after 2008, that’s when life as we knew it pretty much ended.

Same. I was 15 the night the clock hit midnight and actually watched the NYE broadcast mainly because I loved No Doubt around this time. For me social media began with LiveJournal and Friendster. MySpace came after, followed by FB and so on. I miss how pre-9/11 politics didn’t divide us to the extent they do now. Us millennials had no clue what the future held…

I choose to live in this headspace as opposed to the world that has developed since, especially that of the last few years. It dissolves my anxiety (that I never used to have). There were *people*, just standing around (we could afford to pay for more of them), not in a rush to do something, just existing in the present. There was opportunity for serendipity, you didn't know what might happen. It was okay to just be; people weren't pressuring you to be productive or snubbing you for not appearing or acting a certain way (as much). Expectations and standards were lower; it was easier to operate as a natural human instead of contorting into some corporate or PC archetype for inclusion and survival. A feeling that everything was "okay" in general. People didn't take themselves so seriously; even the "stars" (who were much more of stars then than whoever is now) were more humble and grounded. People had better social skills, more personality. Maybe the fact that it's all locked in the past and can't do any harm now, makes it appear to be more innocent than it is; but the apparent naivete back then is so starkly different that it comes off as cute. Fk, how do I get back there? Are there oases in the world like this now?
