Renting your boat out is perfectly normal, many people do it to assist with the cost of them. I did it for a year. Cheers to the sailors of the world and a grand cheers to the finders.

I know the yacht club well I grew up there, learnt to sail optimist there. This vessel would of stood out like a mega yacht, it would be unusually super luxurious. If they headed to a busier marina with more similar yachts it would of blended in more.

The commenter stated that he is from Croatia, so I think you have to be grateful to the commenter to write in Your language so You can understand it, even though the commenter does not have to do this for you. A great story with a happy ending, well done on the report - first I heard about it. Just as a footnote I really dislike the term superyacht when the vessel is not a grotesque display of wealth. I understand it drives traffic from would-be millionaires but for those of us into sailing who are chartering similar sized yachts with friends there's not much luxury about sailing them.

Production pleasure vessels have a hidden HIN (Hull Identification Number) which if the actual HIN had been altered would have helped the authorities in positively identifying the boat.

In Europe the kicker is if the boat has been used for illicit activities like drug running . The boat can still be impounded even if the boat had been leased out on holiday charter.

So... boat makers could/should get ~50 RFID chips, all with one code, and bury them in the fibreglass as the boat is being made. A simple RFID scanner would then identify the boat in particular. It would be hard to remove them without making a mess. And/or, add microdots to the fibreglass, so they can be dug out, cleaned, and viewed in a microscope, similar to "explosive taggants" used to identify the origin of explosive blocks. Just make it hard to remove the identifiers.

Looks like a backup gps location system that has its own power supply and needs to be "deliberately" shut off every couple of weeks so it doesn't activate randomly seems to be a good idea.

Owners need to leave some air tags hidden around the boat. It's almost certain that someone with an iPhone will be on the boat at some point. So the AIS is irrelevant.

good story- use an air tags. or go old school- etch the last 4 numbers of your SS # somewhere like the engine room- only you could direct police to look. thieves are just not that smart.

Thieves with bad taste. Having been ashore for quite a few years, it's hard to know if that's now a common design style, reverse angle stem and barn door transom? Whatever the case, it's ugly as hell, reminiscent of very late 19th century and early 20th century warships, which were no beauties. FMD.
