Laura Oberlander was born in Tuczyn, Eastern Poland, in 1934. In July 1941, shortly after the Germans occupied Tuczyn, locals launched a pogrom against the Jews in which Laura and her mother were severely injured. Laura describes her family's sufferings in the ghetto, the loss of her elder sister Hanele, escape to the nearby village of Szubkow and the 18-months long hiding in the barn of the Gerasimchik family.

"Righteous Among the Nations Lyubov Gerasimchik, born 1906, lived in the village of Szubkow, Eastern Poland (nowadays Ukraine) with her husband, Pavlo, their three teen-age children and her deceased sister's little daughter. In spite of the mortal danger she did not object when her husband decided to shelter a Jewish family from the nearby town of Tuczyn."

Such a tragic experience for a little girl and her family. What kind of person would hurt a woman and child????

Until finding this site, I knew nothing about individuals designated as Righteous Among the Nations. It is heartwarming to learn of their assistance and sacrices.

It is so important to remember those righteous gentiles and not to ever generalise all Polish people also because it does not prevent wars

For non-orientated people, the description might be confusing, Tuczyn was indeed in Eastern Poland, but it was an Ukrainian village, so both the pogrom and the help (Gerasimchik is far from a Polish surname) was made by Ukrainian people. Regards.
