Excellent tip! I followed your suggestion, and it turns out the Motorola M plug is indeed physically and electronically compatible. This opens up a lot of possibilities for additional speaker mics as well as headsets. Many thanks for the input.

I just received my microphone. There is a jack on the bottom for earbuds or equivalent. I have not tested it yet.

@@nighthawk8764 When in doubt, it's better not to risk it. The best thing is to limit the battery charge to 80%. Lithium batteries have a slow wear curve of up to 80% and a fast wear curve of 80% to up to 100%. Explaining... a load from 0 to 100% generates a complete wear of 1 load cycle. Current batteries survive about 300 full charge cycles, after which they begin to deteriorate more quickly. One way to extend (and a lot) the useful life of the battery is by charging it to only 80%, because, due to the characteristics of these batteries, charging from 0% to 80% will only generate 0.21 wear cycle. That's right, only 1/5 of the wear that would be generated if the load were made up to 100%. In theory, if you always charge your lithium batteries to only 80%, you will multiply their useful life by 5! (Under normal temperature conditions - heat is the enemy of lithium battery life). Another important action is to never let the battery drain its charge, charge it when it is close to 5% (use an estimated usage time if the device does not have a low charge warning). Zeroing the battery charge also shortens its lifespan. Thus, managing the use of a HT so that charging procedures involve charging from 5-10% to 80% tends to multiply your battery life. The IC -V86 has a button on the charger that limits the charge to 80%, a nice feature that makes handling the lithium battery easier. If your device does not have this characteristic, it is possible to charge up to approximately 80% by marking the charging time from 5% to 100% and then charging from low charge to up to 80% of the total time. So even if the HT doesn't have a cable for charging while in use, proper handling, a good spare battery and the car's 12 volt charger can handle most situations. Below is a table with general wear characteristics of a lithium battery at various charging levels. from 0 to 70% - 0.10 wear cycle from 0 to 75% - 0.15 wear cycle from 0 to 78% - 0.18 wear cycle from 0 to 80% - 0.21 wear cycle from 0 to 85% - 0.27 wear cycle from 0 to 90% - 0.42 wear cycle from 0 to 95% - 0.62 wear cycle from 0 to 97% - 0.74% wear cycle from 0 to 100% - 1 wear cycle (ordinary ion batteries have around 300 charge cycles of useful life) Data taken from the Accubatery app for Android and Iphone. 73!!

@@cp300blackout4 I'm guessing the same holds true for cell phone batteries. I usually charge mine when it gets to between 30-40% and I charge to 80-85%. I know there are lots of different Lithium chemistries, but I think 0% to 100% does damage more quickly than more moderate charge and discharge levels on all the chemistries. True?

@@nighthawk8764 I believe this is correct. As far as I know, current lithium batteries all have the same characteristics of wear and useful life, this applies to both the common type of batteries, such as the 18685 type, as well as the flat packs that we use in cell phones and other devices. Wear increases for 3 reasons, fully charging the battery, fully discharging it, and heat. I think that charging from 30% to 80% would be an optimal procedure aiming at a longer battery life. Of course charging at 20%, 10% would still be very good, the biggest question would be how much starting the charging at 30-40% would disturb the use of the device on a daily basis. If it doesn't get in the way of using the device I think it's great. As for the heat, one of the issues that worried me about using the HT while charging is that even cell phones heat up a lot if used while they are being charged, so the same could happen with the HT (as for cell phones, both in conversation and when using heavy apps like YT) so don't use your phone while it's charging, it would avoid overheating and therefore increase its lifespan. My experience with my current phone is pretty positive using the 10-80% charging method, I've had it for 4 years and it still has 80% health (according to the Accubattery app I use - a relative measure that the app uses regarding battery health). That is, the battery does not heat up too much, it charges in normal time (up to 100% if necessary) and lasts the normal expected time (according to the use of the cell phone and applications) All with the original battery!! 73! 👍

It's a deal breaker for me, I've been looking for it since one week, never found one.

You could drop the spare battery into the charge cradle while running another battery. Unfortunately, Yaesu still has not produced a battery eliminator kit to run the radio from a power supply. Nor have I been able to locate a 3rd party provider for that part. This is my #1 gripe with this radio. I've spoken directly to several Yaesu reps about this and they seem completely uninterested.

That is their "commercial" version aimed at radios in the Business Radio Service. The antenna is a dual bander optimized for 155 & 455 Mhz. It's also good for MURS.

Unfortunately, no. There is no battery eliminator kit either. I have a bit of a low intensity conflict currently running with the Yaesu USA rep over this situation.

@@KS6DAY They could have designed the case to fit the SBT-12 AA tray they use for their aviation HTs. I wonder why they didn't do that.

Not anymore. They are made in Japan now. The first one I bought was made in china. But the last two I bought were marked made in Japan. I have a video on this that I did around December of 2021.

@@Oldpaint0216 yes actually but that wasn’t my point Karen. My point was he was essentially comparing it to Chinese made radios. I was simply letting him know that this radio was also made in china, at least originally.
