The FT-818ND began life as the FT-817 and after many years, it is being retired. Peter G3OJV looks back on its success and some of its failures. What next~?

I’ve had an FT817 from about 2002 and it’s always been a very useful radio to own. Still haven’t found found a decent contender to replace it.

Tell your granddaughter well done! Sad to see the FT817/8 going away. I've had one since they were released. I never understood the folks who had such a hard time with the menu structure. I've found out that I couldn't live without one of these fantastic little radios. It is happy with 8.5 volts the whole way up to 14 volts, it gets the job done in any case. I love the form factor of the little 817/8 , I have DSP and pretty waterfalls on my home rigs, sure didn't need these creature comforts whilst sitting on a mountainside, the no nonsense little rigs will be missed. I do hope they will do something similar, and not go crazy with stuff I just don't need out in the field. I'll hold on tight to my 818 for as long as it's wheels stay on. 73

Thanks for update Peter. End of an era indeed. I think of the 817 as a Swiss army knife. If I could only keep one radio, it would probably be the 817. I do hope Yaesu come up with something similar. HNY.

Yes, I heard about it, and the FTM-400 mobile unit too. I had the original one about 20 years ago, and the 817ND in between the 818 just last year! I am glad I got one then 73 de W2CH Ray

Had one, sold it for a KX3 and never looked back. Primarily due to the menu system and no ATU. Be interesting if Yaesu come up with a replacement. Hope so. Happy New Year to everyone and thanks for posting,

I have to say the lack of auto ATU is a selling point for me. 1) an ATU in the rig is the wrong place for an ATU 2) I use resonant antennas, so why am I forced to by an auto ATU inside the rig that I don't want or use.

Hi Peter, sad news. I purchased a brand new FT-818 last week for nostalgia reasons. I already own a KX2 from Waters. I think given the format and screen size they did and excellent job with the menus. KX2 is the pinnacle of portable operating, shame many people want to buy them but supply is extremely limited. I’m still waiting for a stock alert from Waters for the real time clock module. Let’s hope Yaesu have something coming in the near future. 73 Steve MW0SAW

Popular as the 817/818 has proven to be, the fact is, with the current preference for large colour touch screens and IT connectivity, it's not possible to "update" it and keep it's current format. Who knows, maybe Yaesu have a replacement up their sleeve but it has an awful lot of boxes to tick to become anything like as successful.

Hi Peter, happy new year, just a quick change of topic just watched your video re time for a change re RST and this got me thinking about 70cms FM simplex is it time to move to a different part of the band away from the low power licence free beacons and other devices, depending where and how close you are to one of these can make using FM simplex a waste of time, I live in London and most of the available simplex channels are chirping away with very strong signals and calling CQ on SU20 would be pointless unless the other stations were above an S9 or higher to get over the licence free telemetry, I did mention this to the rsgb and in their wisdom they just suggested using a tone squelch really helpful, what do you think, is it time to move higher up the band to make FM simplex viable again.
