Wendell, K5WAN, is an S9+ (aka VIP+) Patreon team member. He gifted me his spare Yaesu FTM-400XDR VHF/UHF transceiver. I’ve never owned a dual-band base station, so this is a nice addition to the shack.
In this video, I unbox the Yaesu MEK-5 microphone extension cable, after some frustration with an eBay knock-off cable.
I plan to shoot more videos showing how to program the FTM-400XDR.

First time I needed one of these, I bought cable, crimp pliers, RJ11/12 plugs and the double female straight adapters in bulk, and have been sorted ever since - for less than the cost of one genuine cable. Great to have in the toolkit, as you can make to length.

Thank you Doug and thank you long haulers, it’s always a toss up with equipment like this, some things I get from e-Bay or other sites but the big things like radios I always get from one of the big shops. I got my Yaesu separation kit for my FT-891 from HRO which works great and no issues.

My very first eBay purchase ever was a radio. It was a terrible experience. The guy shipped a Yaesu FT-900 double-boxed. The boxes were perfect. Radio packed in foam too. But the radio had been dropped on concrete. The heatsink fins still had concrete residue. The control head had a quarter-sized hole in it. And there were no cables, even though the seller said he would include the cables. He filed an insurance claim against the shipper. But he wanted the radio back and the money. I tried for months to get my money back. Neither he or PayPal did anything. Finally, my bank did a chargeback against his account. I stayed off eBay for years. I did eventually begin to purchase small things from eBay. Most radios on eBay are overpriced anyway, so I won’t buy a radio via eBay. I only buy small things. That said, my brother did find a good deal on a pristine FT-890/AT. But that was the exception, not the rule.

HRO also sells third-party microphone extensions for this radio. They work fine.

Any 6P6C cable should work, with the correct double female. I just took a chance on a “cheaper” deal. I still cannot believe the seller telling me that they test each cable and adapter before they ship them.

Me too, Wendell. Strange. I originally doubted the adapter, but I was assured that both the cable and adapter had been tested before they were shipped.

@JamesHindsW5ATJ it’s a fun radio, Jim! I like the display. I’ve never had a dual-band base station. I have a dual-band ICOM in my truck though.

These aren't hard to make. I've done it with my mobile radios in my truck. I can make a cable for less than $1. I'm a network guy, so I had all of the cable and connectors already. The adapters are just RJ-45 or RJ-11 straight pass throughs.
