Hello Mike I watched you video on the yaesu charger. Funny thing I own a Ft70d with the same charge time (8 hours). I bought a stand charger for it awhile ago so after I watch your video I plug my stand charger in and it charged my radio in 4 hours. Maybe it the stand up chargers. So thanks for the video.

You are right, I’ve got the Yaesu cradle charger and it takes around 5 hours to charge the large battery. The large capacity batteries don’t last long in my FT5DR. I get about 6.5 hours out of them with no transmitting, and I have gps, aprs, Bluetooth disabled, and I have the battery save on. I got one of the first ones from HRO when they came out.

I have a ft 3D and most of the time I carried it I left the radio off because it died fast and took forever. I now carry the TID radio H6 with a signal stick antenna and it lasts for a while! I love Yaesu and love fusion but the $40 ht.. Thanks again for the video! Maybe I’ll check out this charger cradle..

Preach Brother, Preach ! Quite a difference. I guess the only thing I wonder about is if the low priced charger has the built in protection for the battery. It charges so much quicker, I have to wonder if the battery life will be compromised. That, I just don't know. Volts and amperage makes the charge quicker. Somewhere, this charger is putting more into the battery than the stock charger. And yes, you are 100% right, Yaesu should have included the cradle charger with the radio. Thanks for the review Mike. For the FT5 I bought a 3800 mA battery from Batteries of America. It is too thick to allow the radio to drop down completely into the C 41 charger, so it will not charge. I purchased this charger from Amazon for $19. The radio drops down into it and works just fine. Plus, with the battery installed on the HT, it is now thick enough to where it doesn't wobble on the table and fall over. Same is true with the ID-51.

I'm glad I found this video before buying the Yaesu ft5dr, I have second thoughts now. I will not spend 450.00 for a radio with this kind of issues. The cradle charger should be included with the radio.

Yes, when I purchased my ft5dr I didn't like the charger. So amazon to the rescue got the same one you have. My radio goes from 1 bar to full charge in 2.5 hours 73s de n3lou.

Good. I’ve been looking for a drop-in charger for my ft5d. My experience with charging using the plug-in charger that came with the radio is also unsatisfactory! lol

I'm not surprised that charging through the radio, rather than charging the battery directly, is a lot slower. When I bought my FT5D a year ago, I splurged on their drop in charger. It takes 4.5 hours to charge a 2200mAh battery (completely drained).

The Yaesu CD-41 cradle output = 8.4V at 600mA. The Yaesu cradle has a resistor in it that limits the output from the wall charger AC adapter Yaesu SAD-11B output = 10.5V at 1.0A I would like to know what the FT5D internal charging circuit sends to the battery, but it must be limited due to the fact the display recognizes the increased V however the unit does not seem to significantly improve charging duration.

The advertisement does not indicate this will work for the old VX-6R but the contacts look like they are the same positions. Anyone know if this will work for the VX-6R? Is it maybe too many amps or something?

I have bought 2 of the Amazon chargers and they both charge well one has a defect that I can’t drop the radio in to charge I have to take the battery off and then it will charge haven’t figured out what’s causing that yet.

I bought the factory cradle. It died after a year. I drove down to Yaesu and dropped it off for warranty. They won't warranty it because I bought it over a year ago. I was really disappointed in Yaesu because I'm a huge fanboy. Thanks for this video. At least now I can buy one at 60% of the cost of a factory one. 73

I also did the same thing; I purchased the aftermarket desktop charger from Amazon. Have you tested the Yaesu supplied charging brick against the aftermarket one supplied with the cradle?

I know this is old but, I'm just looking into one myself. I think because the yaesu one uses the 10v .4a adapter, it's going to charge slower. It crazy that they nerfed the charger to put less powerful charging direct to the radio and then won't supply something better for direct to battery. Unless they're really worried about their batteries.

In the video i noticed that on the bottom the same part number is displayed as the yeasu one.

My only question is how does the Amazon charger effect the batteries long term? I first had the Amazon charger. I would swap the batteries as I charged them. I had one battery totally stop working. Have no idea if the rapid charging had anything to do with it. Just wondering and throwing it out there to the commenters.

I bought the yaesu cradle charger and it died after a year or so. Will try this option instead of buying another one from yaesu

I have an FT2D charger and radio. The voltage out of it is 10.5VDC at 1.0 amps. It takes forever to charge the battery. 12VDC charger would actually charge faster. I do not know the voltage of the stock charger of the FT5D.

Yaesu SHOULD BE EMBARASSED at the charger included, I agree. I did go with the drop in charger from Amazon and it IS A WINNER. I'm not sure about the exact timing of charge, but I went from low charge (just 1 or 2 LED's on the battery meter) to full charge in around 3 hours, maybe less. Not sure. I know I walked away from the radio on the charger and did some home stuff. Thanks for the advice.

I'd love it, except you're right, it is plagued with gremlins. Charging it from the radio restarts it, as noted, it takes FOREVER, the bluetooth and wired audio are unusable.... It's the thing I want to love.

If you don't mind waiting 3 weeks, you can get a Yaesu drop in charger for $24

Just a guess, but does it charge faster in the cradle because it’s connecting directly to the contacts on the battery, as opposed to having to go through the radios circuitry if only using the wall wart.

So a quick question for you? did you compare the Yaesu drop in charger to the aftermarket amazon one because I own the Yaesu drop in charger and see similar times I agree it should be included with the purchase. Unfortunately I agree with your take that charging direct to the radio is atrocious I am extremely disappointed with battery life on the FT5D I use mine a lot on my Allstar node on low power and completely disappointed with battery life I own 3 batteries and suggest not to buy the aftermarket batteries they are worse than the OEM batteries.

Love the radio, hate the charger. Its a joke. Thanks for the info. Not having a stand is ridiculous too. I bought the car charger and it does charge faster. Like others have mentioned, it should have a USB-c port on the battery like some Chinese radios. Surprised they won’t run into issues with the European Union for not using USB-c.

There's zero excuse for this not to be a USB-C compatible. Especially, when it's supposed to ne a top of the line radio.

Sadly you can buy a baofeng for $30 and it comes with a drop in charger

My Yaesu quick charger wall wart fit the boefeng cradle. DON'T DO IT! The cradle isn't rated for the quick charge increased amp level and it melted the cradle. Lucky I was at home or my house would be burned down.

Is not a yaesu stock charger problem, but internal charging circuit in radio. is sloooow, this is general problem ;/ is crazy slow true. Look , stock charger is 10.5V and 1A. So, is not a charger problem, but internal circuit ;) Also this stock charger is faster than external charger (from amazon etc) 😊 External charger have only half wattage.

KZfaq teese me on home page, nice video. OK I got the cheap version of fusion radio, FT-70D. same idea. Battery charging circuit in the radio, more crammed in, less output. takes what it does (slow). Plug in desk charger, more spaced out, better hear dissipation, more power, charge faster. Batteries of that size could do in less than 3 I bet. Still an improvement and slower it charges, nicer on the battery. My mobiel phone did quick on one of the posh USB 3 fast chargers, I felt battery got hot. Dont need phone to do in 50 minutes, put on a ebay finest (cheap) caharger!. slower, nicer for the battery that died, on 2nd one now. The time using the radio is poor and also they know people wil by the charger, More money but makes the task ok. I use my one on a home made (2 photo frames) on the desk now so plugs in, give battery a charge when been out for a walk, take it. That was not the plan when got Yaesu FT-70D. cheap fusion radio. Got the desk charger. Now in the draw not doing much as plugging in on side does now, still see the poiint of the drop in charger. Got one. On QRZ, linked in about or banner photo.

this radio sucks, my Baofeng is better. the FT5Dr will not work with the repeeters I use. They will not allow you to use one CTCSS tone for TX and another one for RX. The Baofeng gets my local weather, but not the FT5Dr.

I would disagree FT5D is the best VHF/UHF radio, unless you talking about pretty display but out of all my dual band handhelds the FT5D is the worse handheld I ever owned due the poor receiver performance. I would also want to add their sub-menu is not the greatest either comparing to some other radios I have used. The battery life sucks and the charging times are horrible... so saying FT5D is the best portable radio not a chance. I would say this is the worst portable dual band radio I ever owned from Yaesu.

I ordered a quick charger for my ft3d (not the same seller I don't think) two times from amazon, and each time I got a ft-65 charger. LOL. I'm sad.

I bought a FT70, extra battery and quick charger as a first radio before the real battery life issues reared its ugly head. My batteries both split within 2 years, unacceptable. When I called @yaesuusaofficial tech support told me thats about all the lifetime you should expect using a quick charger. I havent replaced those batteries yet and picked up the FT5 instead. The charge time is slow for sure, however if Yaesu is manufacturing batteries that are useless after just 2 years with a quick charge dock you have to do something. I guess it becomes a decision between the convenience of a quick charge or extending the service life of your batteries. I will say its nice to have a radio that does last all day. It gets old having to burn through 2 batteries and charge them daily with the FT70. @k8mrd love the content
