Walk around the island village Yagishiri Island (Hokkaido) / Island village where Amimoto's house for herring fishing remains
One of the two islands nestled on the Sea of Japan 25km from Haboro Port. One-third of the island is covered with about 50 species and 150,000 m of natural monument virgin forest, such as long and narrow onco (yew tree, water pine) from east to west. It is relatively warm in northern Hokkaido due to the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current, but the monsoon from the northwest is strong in winter. In the northwest of the island, there is a pasture area where sheep are loosely grazing. Yagishiri Island has been developed by herring fishing since the herring fishing ground was cultivated in the middle of the 18th century. The village consists of two villages, the Higashihama district, where Yagishiri Port is located, which is the gateway to the island, and Nishiura. It is said that culture entered Yagishiri before Haboro.
Small wooden houses of fishing facilities are lined up near Yagishiri Port, and the town is formed on a plateau. Among them, the largest building "Old Konaie Residence (Yagishiri Folk Museum, Haboro City)" stands out. This is the old house of Amimoto for herring fishing, which was built in 1883. Originally from Shioya Village, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Konoya family made a fortune by fishing for herring, and also ran a kimono dealer and a general merchandise dealer in addition to Amimoto. The vicinity of this former Kono family residence is the center of the town, and it is long and narrow from north to south along the coastline.
If you go west on the north coast of the island from Higashihama, there will be no houses for a while, and houses will start to appear again from around 3km. Nishiura was also a village on a terrace, and it was a village with wide spaces between houses.
