You could say Def Leppard's Joe Elliott is on a rock ‘n’ roll mission when it comes to Mott the Hoople. Elliott discusses in the video above why he's trying to get the British rock band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Awesome interview...it's well-known how encyclopedia Joe's musical knowledge is, combined with exceptionally great and wide-ranging tastes...been a Def Lep fan since 1982/1983 when I was 15...I never viewed the band as heavy metal, never, but hard, UK glam-influenced POWERPOP...not unlike a Sweet-influenced, English version of Cheap Trick...I enjoy all their Albums and songs, and I'M REALLY looking forward till late this week, when their new album, "Diamond Star Halos" gets released...the 3 pre-release singles are amazing...this could be one of their best albums yet...btw, I loved "Yeah!!" to death & I totally got that it proved their main influences are early 70s UK glam rock...Sweet, Slade, Mott, Bowie, etc...and many still don't get it...I could definitely have an in-depth talk with Joe...one thing I remember is when Def Lep had US club shows promoting their then-latest album, "X", they played Irving Plaza in NYC, and there was an after-party at this restaurant, I went down with some fans, tried to get in unsuccessfully, but we waited outside the place for the band to come out...I recall I did talk with Rick, Viv, Phil & I think Sav...but when Joe came out, he was either preoccupied or drunk, but I was able to get a word in & I gave him these photo doubles of Ian Hunter from this gig I attended not long before at NYC's Bowery Ballroom, thought he would appreciate them...I got a quick thanks, but nothing else...hope he enjoyed them...but yeah, Joe is quite cool & down to earth...

Joe is absolutely spot on about Dylan. No matter who plays a Dylan song, it sounds better than the original. If you think you don't like Dylans writing, try "You Ain't Going Nowhere" in the version by The Byrds. Perfection. Interesting talk :)

I agree w/Joe... why does anyone have to explain the "why" one likes a certain band/singer or certain musical styles? To each their own, and what floats their boat may not necessarily float mine, but hey, so long as you and others are enjoying it, rock on! Growing up in the 70s was hard... I was into Queen, Kiss, big band music (bless my mom, she exposed us to all sorts of musical styles!), country... whatever got my foot jammin', I was digging it. I'm STILL doing it at 57!! I'm sooo glad Joe said he didn't care for Dylan (I find that guy & the Beatles SO overrated!!🙄)... some of their tunes are ok, but not something I'd play on the daily.🤷‍♀️ I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, Elliot seemed relaxed and he was talking like a true fan. Cool. 😎

I saw Elliot with a rainbow rising shirt. And he has so much knowledge on sabbath and zeppelin and Phil Colleen said his favorite guitarist was blackmore. Of course they were influenced by the hard rock/metal guys UFO, sabbath, zeppelin, purple, cactus, budgie

Joe getting bullied at school for liking "glam" music...I wonder if it was worse for that in Sheffield than in a lot of other parts of England? Maybe he still feels a little resentment towards heavy metal or classic rock from his school days. I didn't really call Hysteria or Pyromania metal...at the rock end of pop I guess. On Through the Night and High 'n Dry were obviously heavier and I do think the first album is very similar to Iron Maiden's first, both came out in the same month in 1980 I think. I thought Paul Di'anno was more punk than Bruce Dickinson and he and Joe sound not dissimilar on those albums. I think bands that got the NWBHM tag were a mix of punk and metal, apparently Mötorhead's "Ace of Spades" united the punks and the metalheads, though I think Lemmy reckoned they were too old to really be part of the NWBHM scene. But fun, catchy songs like "Hello America" from the first Leppard album distinguished them from their peers. Interestingly there was the London band Girl, of which Phil Collen was member pre-Leppard, who put their first album out just a couple of months before Leppard's and Maiden's and very similar to both, maybe somewhere in between, but calling themselves Girl and really playing up the androgyny on their album and single covers you can imagine they were into a lot of '70s glam-rock too 💃🌟

When I was at school in the early 1980s, my mate was a big fan of Mott the Hoople (several years after they had split). I liked 'All the Way From Memphis' and 'All the Young Dudes' but couldn't get into the albums. Four decades later, however, listening to songs such as 'Thunderbuck Ram' and 'The Journey', I can see why he liked them.

I admire Joe Elliott, but he is being an optimist about getting classic (but unfashionable) bands such as Mott the Hoople into the RnR Hall of Shame. If great bands such as Free, Blue Oyster Cult, UFO, King Crimson and Jethro Tull can't get it, then there is no chance. I don't really want the classic rock bands in there, nor the finest folk/indie artists such as Natalie Merchant and the late Sandy Denny. Far too good for the RnR Hall of Shame. It is full of US media favourites, who have kissed the right arses and made millions of pounds for the influential cronies at certain record labels.
