Religion was outlawed in communist Russia. People caught practicing Judaism were usually exiled to Siberia. Stalin also sent lots of Jewish doctors and professors to Siberia. Also during the Holocaust, Russia was allied with the Germans at the beginning of the war. They divided Poland between both countries. The Jews who ended up on the Russian side, and didn’t want to become Russian citizens, were also sent to Siberia. They had to learn how to survive in the freezing weather. They thought they had it bad, but realized after the war that it actually saved them from the Nazis. I may be mistaken, but I think during the Cantonist decree under Czar Nikolai, the young Jewish boys who were taken away from their parents to join the army, were taken to Siberian villages until they were of age. I was a big reader as a kid, and always wondered if the description of the severe cold and hard work to survive daily living. This series helps me understand it better
