A History of Hypotheses on the Origin of Animals
The evolution of animals from their protozoan ancestors’ marks one of the most pivotal,
and poorly understood, events in life’s history. I will present evidence from the study of choanoflagellates, the closest relatives of animals, that enriches our understanding of animal evolution, including the discovery that cellular mechanisms
underlying gastrulation and neurulation predate the origin of animals.
