@Steve. Worked for me the 2 times I have had to use it on the street in 45 years of practice. The X factor is the uki and the opponent. Inside the dojo the attacker knows what’s coming and knows how to “roll” with it. Outside is not a controlled situation and few attackers know how to fall - they actually hurt themselves. @Treal. I was fortunate enough to work out with the TKD class after my Aikido sessions were over. (Sensei allowed them to use our mats because space was hard to find). I learned that motions of attacks are basically the same with any limb. By observing them, we incorporated kicks in our attacks. Not all Aikikai dojo’s are the same. We Americans like to improve and add things to our own satisfaction. On the attack side that may work but on the nage side it ceases to be Aikido as intended by O Sensei

I trained in Aikido for almost 20years and frankly,i got tired of the wrist grabs.I realized practicing them over and over was useless, redundant, needless and out dated.I'm not saying wrist grab defenses shouldn't exist. But Aikido relies on them way too much.A basic knowledge of them is all that's needed and more emphasis should be placed on lapel grabs, realistic rear chokes, punches of all types, kick defenses, sparring, and intense randori.

You were in the wrong Dojo. The only wrist grabs we do are exercises emphasizing footwork, tenkan and balance. no Ushiro? Shomenuchi, Yokomenuchi or Tsuke? Agreed. More emphasis should be placed on the practical. But don't discard what you learned. Seek a balance.

Agreed. Studied it for years myself and arrived at the same conclusion. Overall, its mission of not harming your attacker while retaining control is admirable and has merit but at the end of the day, it still has to work and that is where it falls short.

It depends on the sensei, like for example, Ikkyo has variations, one of them might not even work in the streets against a seasoned fighter. Aikido works, but it will depend on your training and how you connect it to a real fight. You have to kinda see aikido from a different point of view. See what's behind the techniques that are being taught.
