Mike- So happy to see you emphasizing your expertise in gear and not just records. I've bought two pretty solid systems from Mike (BAT, Rega, Klipsch, Technics, Thorens, Focal- he carries great brands). It greatly adds to the enjoyment of the process to have Mike's passion and knowledge behind the purchase.

You really hit the nail on the head. There is a lot of very expensive gear that doesn't sound very good together. I appreciate your honesty. Where I find this to be most evident is the further down the audio chain you go. Here's what I mean by that. I own a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable (and I by no means feel that is your only option but I have owned one for 40 years and it works with just about everything just so long as the components further down the chain are compatible, injecting more and more of their own characteristics into the sound). It has taken me years to tweak the end of the chain and surprisingly, I have ended up with a fairly modest amplifier (Linn LK85) and preamp (Aragon 18K) and even more modest speakers (vintage Rectilinear XIas that are 50 years old). Where I have found most of the problems are with very expensive amplifiers that are simply horribly incompatible with the very expensive speakers' people have purchased. I had one friend literally fall down to a sitting position when I played some of the Skull and Roses album by The Grateful Dead on this system. Cost of this system? Hard to ballpark because the Linn is 41 years old and has some upgrades. I think you would have to spend about $8,000 on a new one to get to the level of what I have in this one. But the rest of the system is maybe $3,000. Now I will say I have an acoustically great and relatively small listening room. That simplifies the problem quite a bit.

I have a Yamaha AS2200 integrated amp. I love it. The MM Phono input in to it is that good i sold my $1000 phono and use it. Took at least 100 hours to break in. Although only 90w per channel it will drive anything as its quality power.

Nicely done, Michael. When I first got into hi-fi back in the 80's, what I could listen to in the area that I lived was what many would consider "mid-fi". I placed Yamaha in that category then. (I bought a Yamaha CR-3020 receiver...it was gorgeous!!). Yamaha and Luxman were available at the shop I frequented, and both brands made some of the best looking equipment there was....still do. Yamaha has definitely stepped up their game over the years....the equipment still looks beautiful, but sounds so much better. It can compete with some of the best in high end. Thanks for the review, and for sharing your passion. Nice job!!

Mike!! Whats missing in this setup is a good 32 - channel EQ made by Arts Professionals. Youll be surprisingly astonished how much better the sound is with this EQ. Personally i have never like ANY stereo setup without an EQ part of the sysyem hands down. I never like hearing music "flat" from the vinyl from my turntable. I like the idea of manipulating the sound to custom tailor my taste of what i think sounds good to me..period.

this speaker design is the best as i have a big colection of hi-fi components and have a lot of diferent but good speakers and what i notice common to all is the not having a big box to drive and let the sound flow, outside might be a box but inside for sure is made to sound perfect and more compatible with diferent types of recordings and music styles, and from that range are with no doubt very good

That amp/preamp combo is very intriguing to me, I wonder how they pair with other speakers. 100wpc into 8 ohm class A/B isn’t a ton, but it’s very impressive that it fully doubles into 200wpc at 4 ohm, which means it had crazy current. I will plead with my editors to see if I can get a review sample of the pair.

I'm a YAMAHA fan from the 80's. I still have my NS 1000m speakers and PF 1000 turntable. They still sound amazing so I don't have any doubts about the new gear. In these old hi fi days YAMAHA had also good moving coil cartridges. I believe they had excellent subcontractors for their gear. Mikro seiki for turntables and audio technica for cartridges but I'm not sure. I'm sure that speakers ns1000m had the privilege of sounding great near the walls. Great video as always. Thank you very much

i have a very good hi-fi system that today would cost a fortunme bought in 1971 ,it´s a brand who always had quality components and the control amplifier i own is the more complete ever made as it as all functions one can imagine ,pre-amplifiers for mc cartridges, input volume in the back to level all your components, all that they done was at the most higher quality made, i bought a new system but had some dutch friends since early 80´s talking about Magnat i tested it and it was also very good and only the turntable is a Rega P10 the first i bought from this new generation of turntables ,the last i had bought was a thorens TD2001 in 96 with a ortofon MC cartridge, also to record only as one output so i conected a old but restored nakamichi 700ZXL it looks and sounds very good, from Magnat was the receiver with all modern features a MA900 with a tube pre-amplified cd player as the receiver also has it and some transpull 1500 speakers and sound amazing

Did you try switching the right and left speaker placement? I would think a better soundstage could be had with the tweeters near to each other. There is an acre of front baffle panel between the tweets and mids the way you have them. I have a DYI big box speaker and they soundstage best with the tweeters close as opposed to further away.

That Yamaha turntable is half the price of a Rega Naia and look how massive and well built it is. So is the Rega but their principle is as light and rigid as possible. Very different approach but for that kind of money I want a sherman tank for a turntable.

I first heard the speakers back in 2016 and then the complete set last year. It's beautiful and sounds really good. A little lacking in the mid-range magic wow factor that you get with some of Yamaha's historically best stuff (ie. the Centennial series) but the return to two channel separates is such a welcome move. Based on the relative price of the Technics tables, the 5000 should have been direct drive to stay true to the GT name.

The most important consideration is what something sounds like to the owner of the equipment. The 2nd consideration, even if price is no object, is it cost effective, does it pencil out. It is advantageous, like you said, to have the components matched. As far as how something looks is irrelevant to how it all works together. It is nice to have something which appears matched, but, remember, how something looks is how they were able to sell the cheap-o stuff at places like K-Mart. Mostly flash and pizazz that sounds OK. Now, when I see a turntable, no matter how flashy it might be, when I see a straight tone arm, it reminds me of a kiddie record player and where else they may have cut corners. Back into the 1940's, a "J" or "S" style tubular tone arm with removeable headshell signified the best of the best. Why would a company like Technics stick with a "S" tubular tone arm when they have made other continual improvements and modifications over the decades? Yamaha liked their straight tone arms, dating back decades. Friends who bought them back in the 70's and 80's, never kept them around very long. Matched components are great but to ignore technological advances is not.

BTW - the original NS1000ms were not meant to be positioned how you have your speakers, but the other way round from how you have them , ie switched left to right, so that the speaker cones are positioned pointing towards the centre.
@TheInGroove

These are technically meant to be positioned similarly, but Yamaha recommends reversing them for rooms with unusual shapes or containing obstacles. I don't have a challenging room, but I preferred the soundstage with them reversed.

@RUfromthe40s
@RUfromthe40s 2 ай бұрын
you talk about a problem not many understand why it happens but it´s related with the time of listening in one side of the record ,sometimes the grooves are more apart or tighter but the turntable you have it follows any groove as it is made to play any type of record, at least my yamaha from 71 and other from 79 are similar and no error is made while playing, sometimes the tracking force is not always equal to the anti-skating value but one notices in the last track of one side if a litle correction needs to be made not changing the quality of play in the first track of that record,and some do it automatically as it reads the groove and if needing adjutment it corrects it, great system without a doubt
