Probably the single most useful video I’ve seen on Yamaha AVR’s, especially for someone who’s had one since 2008 and considering an upgrade to a new Aventage model,(or Marantz).

Yamaha was my very first and second receivers. 23 years later and the first is still alive and use for amping my living room and backyard with good old very musical Acoustic Research speakers . People always comment on my sound. That is quality!

I didn't realize straight disabled the virtual channels until you pointed that out. I changed my A4A to standard a few nights ago and it's noticeable with movies and video games in a positive way. Surround Ai is fun to play for a few minutes with but a little weird over time.

Thanks for this - Yamaha should pay you for this because their marketing team doest actually put out any information that's useful on one of the key benefits they provide over the rest of the market. I think I'll wait for the next generation and pickup a A6A for cheap. I really miss the old sound fields I used to love as a kid on my dad's Yamaha and recently tried it via JRiver. I was pleasently surprised at what it did to close mic'd recordings so I want one in my AVR

Great points. They don't push these. I like the plan to pick out an outgoing model at a lower cost. Good strategy. I also like having those sound fields. Nice they are keeping in these models. -Jon

Been at this since 1991 with the RX-V850 surround amp.... and up...on Yamaha...and for pure fidelity it doesn't take long to realize all you need is pure direct for two-channel,and straight mode for movies and tv.....and i don't use ypao eq...i use the through mode because of my room and a all martin-logan speaker 6.1 set-up which works for me. I remember reading the YAMAHA RX-Z11 manual the first time and going...WHOA.... wishing I was a sound engineer to understand all you can do here like the RX-A8A....amazing stuff you can play with till your hearts content...lol... ! YAMAHA.... !

I can align on your points. This Yamaha had the best out-of-the-box experience I have heard to date. I also found that it has a larger improvement in Pure Direct mode then other brands with a “pure” feature. I do like immersive so i find myself debating between sound quality and enveloping sound. -Jon

Best explanation for yamaha features Ive ever seen. Ive been using Yamaha since eighties. I have an Advantage 2080 that I just started using the SURROUND AI option. When I first got this receiver 3 years ago I was not impressed by AI however I think my last Firmware update did something to it since for movies its now amazing. Most powerful surround sound I ever heard and center channel is clear and crisp. I also found its enhanced DSP option is pretty close to AI, in fact it may be better. For music I stick to Pure Direct only.

Nice to have your feedback as a long term Yamaha owner. Glad I could get close to representing all these sound modes with short-term exposure - let me know what I missed or got wrong. I will give SURROUND:AI deeper listening with movies with your recommendation- my initial feeling it is better then standard decode some of the time - I will also try the Enhanced mode to see how it compares. -Jon

Thanks for the comparison Jon. Why are none of the other modes available while playing multichannel SACD as per your comment at the 25:25 mark? This is one of our favorite ways to listen on our McIntosh system...up mixing multichannel hi resolution SACD, multichannel Blu-ray Pure Audio, and/or multichannel DVD Audio using one of those three decoders.

Great question. I can only guess that Yamaha is not willing to invest development cycles on SACD. I am going to compare against Marantz and Emotiva to see how they handle the same. -Jon

Very well done,. Like several other I own & enjoy a 2080. Tempted to upgrade to the A8A what are your thoughts regarding upgrading to the A8A. I power the “LCR” externally

I don’t have experience with the A 2080. However, I would certainly give the RX-A8A favorable marks and my recommendation. From what I have heard from others this model is a step up without losing features / quality from prior generation. -Jon

I have always been curious about the Yamaha DSP. Seems pretty robust compared to the other receivers. Only the Sony ES seems to be on the same level, but still nowhere near the number of options. And with them adopting Auro3D, I can almost consider them. If they produce a 13 channel model soon, I can seriously consider them.

I want to thank you for your review. I am updating my home theater and I was wondering if this product was finished. It's on sale on Amazon for 2700 currently. The onkyo rz70 is coming for the same price and I was considering what to buy. Both are overkill but I wanted to future proof myself.

I have yet to hear and experience the Onkyo TX-RZ50 for myself, but had the TX-RZ50 for a month. The Yamaha outperformed the RZ50 but only slightly. The Yamaha has a better build quality and is a stronger company for support and reliability. I would expect the RZ70 to come closer to the Yamaha - better? Not prepared to say without firsthand experience. The RZ70 has the same speaker layout support as the others. Auro-3d support is promised for the RZ70 but I haven’t seen it being released yet. Perhaps someone else can confirm. Auro-3D is available in the Yamaha today. If you feel better about Dirac over YPAO then that may lean you more towards the RZ70. -Jon

I don’t know why Yamaha persist with these sound fields and presence speakers. I first heard it in the 90’s in a showroom that had setup a special after hours demonstration. At first listen it was fun and sort of impressive. That is, until you get it home realize how much fidelity you are giving up. The only two I ever used for any length of time were 7 channel stereo, when working around the house, and Church, because it can be a little fun to crank up organ music on Church mode. It’s not like you care about detail in that situation. Besides that, I found no use for any of the rest. Had three Yamaha’s over the years and like that they have sounded good and lasted a long time. Still, I think most of that sound field stuff is just to sell in a demo like it first did for me all those years ago. I would say to anyone shopping, don’t think these sound fields are important.

Update, the night mode is something I use. As for all the all movie modes, tried them all and used them for a year or so but eventually just went with THX or multichannel direct all the time.

You may not, but I actually do use 3 regularly depending on what I'm watching. We all need to remember, just because you don't like some does not mean others don't.

I think these sound modes are a matter of preference. I used these types of sound modes with my Sony TA-E9000ES for 20 years with great enjoyment. However, I am finding less joy in them now that I have an immersive system with height speakers. That standard Atmos etc takes its place. -Jon

So is there a way to use the analog balanced input and reproduce it as a 2.1 system (in a 7.2.4 phisicall system)?

I wish I had tested the analog inputs now. However, I would expect the results to be the same as I reported for 2-channel Compact Disc. So yes, 7.2.4 upmixing should occur with that source. -Jon

Finally, an in-depth look at present day sound modes; I still use my 1990's era DSP-A2070 for the Music Hall Soundfields, especially for organ, choral & Classical Pieces. THe Club Venues are excellent for Jazz, Fusion, Folk Music.

Yamaha seems to be the only brand that is keeper this type of sound modes active. Sony had a similar technology for reproducing the acoustics of halls, etc., but it is not in the new models. Glad Yamaha has continued. -Jon

If you have a 7.1 can you still turn on the virtual presence speakers and do you have to use the dsp modes only for it work

If you physically only have 7 ear level speakers (7.x.0) , the Yamaha Virtual Presence Speaker (VPS) mode will give the illusion of height speakers (7.x.4) when a source is used with 7.1.4 content. You are correct - This virtualization can only be used with DSP modes. It is not supported with standard surround decoders or straight modes. Jon

A couple of factors may be impacting. First the streaming device needs to support. I am using the latest Apple TV 4K but you need to ensure that it is setup for Atmos playback. Then you need a source that will stream in Atmos. Then you need to get that signal to your AV Reciever. I recommend directly connecting the streamer to the AVR and not as an ARC,eARC or SPDIF signal from the TV. It can be done be yet another device to configure to support. -Jon

I know you may think that all those DSP settings are a bit Much. For me and others like me love and use them regularly. I use sports when I'm watching the premier League and NFL (feel like I'm in the stadium), Sifi when I'm watching Strang new world and other Sifi programs, believe me they make a big difference to me. It's better to have them and not need them than to want them and not have them. When has choices been a bad thing?🤷🏾‍♂️

I think they have there use and glad that Yamaha keeps those effect alive. For my it depends on the content and my mode. It is a differentiator - here is an example. I was running one of the DSP modes with Norah Jones and my daughter loved it. Then I played the same CD through my Emotive (which doesn’t have similar modes) and I couldn’t achieve the same ambiance without switching back to the Yamaha. -Jon

Dolby Digital Plus can be a 6.1 signal. Dolby Digital Plus content is based typically programmed with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channels. Metadata in the sub-stream defines which speaker will be assigned each channel. Dolby Digital Plus Decoder Operating Modes: AC-3 = 1 to 5.1 channels (640 kbit/s - lossy) E-AC-3 = 6.1 to 7.1 channels (1.664 Mbit/s - lossy) TrueHD = 1 to 7.1 channels (18.0 Mbit/s - lossless) Jon

Digital Dolby has a 5.1 limit. Digital Dolby Plus can support 7.1. -Jon

I am running 5.2.2 and not getting any test tone from subs I get a test tone from Height/fronts and sub. What am I doing wrong? Subs have been turned on and barely work, unnoticeable. And they dont increase in sound by adjusting the gain on subs. Fronts are set to small too. Any advice?

First I would rule out cable and subwoofer settings. Plus your subwoofer cable into height, front or surrounds where your got a test tone - known good output (pre-out though for sub). If that doesn’t work replace with a know good cable. If neither helps I would check on the subwoofer side. I find the some subs default to an auto turn on feature that doesn’t always work. Set to always on during trails. -Jon

It is a mistake I made yesterday when setting up the Sony. I had the center channel wired to the Height 3 (presence 3 in Yamaha notation). Glad you found the issue. -Jon

Yamaha DSP doesn't stand for "digital sound processor" , as I was told by the Yamaha marketing guys back in 1994, it stands for "digital sound processing field" 😬😂😂 lol funny times back then...a detail.

great review mate--i dont like ai sound on my yamaha--- it sounds better off, pure direct sounds like you have zero treble and zero bass--- god knows who would use it apart from a deaf person

@@ripewave for music, i run in 9 channel, it sounds fuller and more precise and engaging, or even 2 channel--- but for movies without doubt the surround setting sounds best if its in DD or DD+ or even DDHD, the ai sounds sort of wavey if playing music , but to me it sounds better off--- in movies its not too bad

Way, way too many options to have without some sort of graphical signal path feedback! There should be some OSD diagram showing current source signal type (2 channel, DTS, DTS **, Atmos, etc) and what happens to it along the signal path. Even something as simple as NIGHT mode is intentionally obfuscated by Yamaha; they’d be less cryptic if their manual was in Japanese! I have an A4A because I have a 5.1 system and I have my front tower speakers bi-amped. With no feedback on the Aventage front display I have no idea what is being fed to my amp, and therefore no idea what is being output or what type of processing is taking place. I thought DIRECT was giving me what was input, but apparently maybe not, and I don’t even see a way to find out what is happening.
