Wow interesting that you say the Baldwin tone changed from the 70s 80s to a later era. I know I tried some older Baldwins ‘40s to ‘60s maybe, that I thought had superior tone but so much has to do with prep it would be interesting to do a kind of shootout. Baldwin has such a different tone than Yamaha in the uprights generally. I have found Steinway small upright had very difficult tone to like for me, not glassy like Yamaha, but I’ve learned that for certain assertiveness rather than kind of dwelly glassy sounds, it is really the right tone. But glassy seems easier to record and just ‘sound good’.

I do feel Baldwin can be more interesting tone wise there is something about yamaha however the consistency which makes it stand out

@@RobertsPianosHouston I read someone said higher tension creates consistent sound. I’m not sure whether that means consistent from piano to piano or whether it’s more about a consistent sound regardless of hammer condition and voicing. Also I think maybe the Yamaha sound is good on mid size or small uprights because the glassy tone seems to have more body to it than the American in that context for some reason. (Still, after many years I’ve finally figured out how to like my Steinway 45 which I’d thought was harsh and thin for a long time)
