Ever since I got the Yamaha DM3 I've been thinking of getting rid of the old DMP7 from 1987. I use this primarily for the Hall Reverb and Symphonic effects. Do they sound the same in the DM3?
Admittedly I don't use very much chorus or reverb in this video. The Symphonic chorus can be a lot deeper than this. Check out more of my DMP7 videos for that.
After comparing both mixers for a while now, with higher send levels and thus more deep effects, I think the DM3 delivers. However, the DMP7 has a "crunch" only old converters and preamps can do and I'm not sure I'll let it go after all.

It added a nice glistening silky aspect to the overall sound. The older DMP7 sounded very flat and dull by comparison. Perhaps that needed more wet signal dialing in etc, to make it stand out more.

I agree and expected to prefer the DMP-7 more… pleasantly surprised. I like the 'flush', flat slate design of the DMP-7 (the entire late 80s era of the DMP line) for vertical mounting… in fact the RARE DMP9-16 was the perfect looking design/form factor for musicians and producers with a lot of rack synths & samplers… it was WAY expensive and apparently got VERY 'warm' and didn't sell well. Would love to see a resurrected version of that rack-mount approach… 8 stereo channels, endless rotary encoders with multi-segment lit LEDs for current value to save space instead of vertical faders, allowing for a 4 or 5 vertical rack space chasis in a modern DM-series mixer.

Also pleasantly surpriced how crisp and clear the DM3 is without falling far from the original symphonic chorus sound. I wish Yamaha would add these effects into their synths and arrangers. There is 2 different “symphonic” effects in the Genos but not quite the same sound

Hi Espen - beautiful sounds. The DM3 definitely has more high end and clarity to my ears, but the DM7 takes me to the 80s right away for some reason. Could be the rounder low end or some saturation with less highs. Kind of like a Tape vs. CD comparison.

Espen, I love both. The DM3 is much cleaner and has a lower noise floor. The older is noisier and a little darker. You could make the DM3 sound darker with a little EQ if you wanted to match it. The DM3 will be much more carefree and less maintenance. The differences are not enough if I was in your shoes. I would sell the older mixer. Thank you so much for a great comparison. PS, I still have a Yamaha DM1000 with my TX802.

3:06 vs 4:08? There's more noise in the tail of the song, the DM3 didn't have that part in the side-by-side, what do you think? Or were you referring to something else?

To me, the background sound on the older mixer sounded smoother/ less harsh, but surely you would expect the opposite to be the case with modern electronics? If it was an EQ issue, I wonder if darkening the DM3 down a tad would have helped? There wasn't a lot in it between the two though.

The DM3 sounds amazing. Yamaha makes great stuff. I just don't know why no manufacturer provides multiple sample rates anymore beyond 48/96kHz. I use a Yamaha n12 because sometimes I need to work on projects at 44.1kHz or 88.2kHz. It's the last digital mixer I can recall that allows multiple sample rates.

I suspect this comparison would be much closer, if we could somehow bring the DM3 back in a time machine to when the DMP7 was new, and listen to them both. It might just be down to the fact the DMP7 is so much older and well-used, that it's adding texture to the algorithm. (Worn silicon? Drifted passive components? Clock jitter?) Could also be Yamaha tweaked the algorithm to take advantage of the much faster processor, with the much wider bus, and much greater memory. I'd keep the DMP7 for the studio (where that texture could matter), and use the DM3 live (where durability counts, and the difference would be lost in the house mix anyway). Either sounds great when you're playing through it. 😉👍

Hi Espen, but you didn't play out both side by side where there is a lot of noise i.e. 3:06 vs 4:08. That is, at 5:16 you should have presented the tail with the DM3 (3:06). Someone below said DMP7 has more noise - that's just because of this editing oversight IHMO: only including the tail of the on the DMP7 in the side-by-side section. IDK why so much more noise in the source material at that point of the song but it's there on both. The DMP7 sounds better jelled esp. in the bass to my ears on Cambridge Audio DACMAGIC200m and Denon AH-D2000 cans. Thanks for the opportunity to compare them I did find it interesting. 2:54 DM3 EP perc sounds more bell-like than at 3:50 on DMP7 which is a bit more perc like; which I guess could be to do with dynamic range and recording levels. Again I prefer the DMP7, but that might be some slight clipping I'm enjoying LOL. [edited to try and get time locators in my comment working]

I missed out on the DMP-7 (though I just about would have sold a kidney to have one back in 1987)… I passed on the whole DMP series because they were just so expensive and I had an SPX-90 and an SPX-900. Aside from the very desirable built-in FX of the DMP series, what was WAY more appealing to me was the ability to have memory locations for snapshots of the ENTIRE mix and have them re-callable with a MIDI PG message. I always enjoy your vids, but thought you might address this feature… can the DM3 recall total mixes using MIDI PG commands?

Especially since I remember the DMP having one send/return (or a routing possibility to that aid) which is lacking on the DP, but my memory is hazy at best. The only thing for the DP would be reliability and no noise floor then, since both boards sound great in their own right.
